Trivial things that please the ever living shit out of you

My son started taking jiu jitsu classes late July and REALLY likes it. He would go everyday if it was up to him.

Every class begins with 35 minutes of lessons, followed by 25 minutes of “rolling” with other kids. My son always has his hand up wanting to go.

Today he rolled with 3 kids who all had much more experience. He legitimately tied 2 of them, and got the 3rd kid in an arm bar within a minute. Then did it again.

Watching him do something he really enjoys, and doing well at it makes me all kinds of happy.

On a side note, I’m glad he’s not rolling with the girls in the class. They are VICIOUS. Like “my older brother’s been beating on me all week and I’m going to take it out on you” vicious.

I’m trying to get out of the house a bit today to give my wife some space - I’ve been home a lot while I’ve been between gigs. I took a backpack with my laptop and two travel mugs of coffee with me this morning when I went to drop the kids off, figuring I would run some errands, sit in a cafe, maybe watch a movie, etc. I pull into the grocery store parking lot and my tire pressure sensor goes off. I just picked up a nail. This same parking lot has a discount tire, it is early enough that it is not overrun, and I already needed new tires. What a perfect fucking moment to have this exact problem.

Discount Tire probably throws all the nails they extract from tires into the nearby parking lots.  Especially near cars that look like they need new tires and can afford it.

My Friday men’s lunch group includes a friend who owns a glass company. For over 10 years my standard greeting is “Hey buddy, how’s business? You need me to go out and create some demand? I’ve got a bag of rocks in my truck, it won’t take me long.”

So TxTow moved from the Friday boy's lunch group to the men's group, eh?

It was spectacular. Took the windog out last night for our nightly ritual where she is supposed to go potty before bed but never does, while I invariably pee off the back deck. The moon was rising through a break in the trees, behind a thin layer of clouds. Absolutely beautiful.

In tonight’s edition of taking the windog out to pee, she was down sniffing around the yard somewhere and I was taking my nightly pee off the deck. I saw something rustling over by the fire pit. Was able to finish my business, get the dog inside, grab the 12-gauge, load it, and still get the armadillo. Satisfying end to the evening.

Several layers of “this is what is satisfying in life:” our refugee kid came over for some stuff we had to go over, and as we were talking about how things were going, he mentioned that he got pulled over the other day (in my old car, which I gave him earlier this year) because a tail light was out. I told him “I bet we can fix that…I even think the extra bulb is in the car.”
1 - it was indeed an easy-to-access bulb, easy diagnosis and fix.
2 - “check in the bottom of the center console. There should be a bulb there. I replaced the other bulb a while back, and kept the extra from the package in case I needed it.” He looks. “Yep, there is.”
3 - click bulb in place, close up taillight, problem solved.

Knew what the problem was. Had the part IN THE CAR. Fixed it in under 5 minutes. That is how you succeed as a man. Victory is mine.

I've got a couple of purple salvia plants next to the house.  I planted them probably in 2020.  They are great plants and very resilient to boot... but that is not what pleases me.  It's the Bumblebees that are constantly flying around them right now.  I feel like I have done something that is beneficial for them and for mankind.  I could watch the Bumblebees for hours.

Yep, go out every morning to see the bees. Have honey bees, bumble bees and butterflies. Always a great way to start the morning.

Can't stand the vines, though!  Got that crap all over the front beds, and can't get rid of it.  Pull it up 4x / year, and it grows back with a passion.

The yellow is loofah, it freezes and does not come back. Coral vine can be invasive, but on the back of the veggie garden don't care. What vine you got? Cuz Wisteria makes me surly.

Lots of shit will do it though that does not vine.

I have a Wisteria arch.  I trim it 3 times a year (needs trimming badly now)

I'm no botanist, but pretty sure it's Kudzu.  It tends to ooze white sap when you pull it, too, which is sticky as hell.  Cleaning that crap out of the bushes and off the side of the house is right up there with watching soccer from the bleachers on a 110 degree day.

^^^Reminds me of the 1970s. Trim it up just a little and it looks much better. No need to completely scrape it bare.

I have a Wisteria-covered pergola. That stuff is aggressive. If I don’t cut it at least 3 times a year it’ll reach across the 7-foot gap to the house.

In 1979, my family was living in California. We used to go to Kmart every so often and they had an icee stand in the store. My folks weren’t the type to get icees on the reg, so I knew better than to ask. But in ‘79, they were having a MLB promotion and you could get a cup with a ball player on it! I was 5, going on 6 and the only player I knew was Pete Rose. I must have seen the ad on TV about the cups and I begged my folks to let me get one. To my surprise, they agreed and the next time we went to Kmart, I hurried to the icee counter. I asked the lady if they had the Pete Rose cup and she said “Sorry, we sold out of that one”. I was crushed. I got an icee anyway, my dad assured me that the player on my cup was also great but I had never heard of this Tom Seaver asshole. I just wanted Pete, dammit!

I was telling this story to someone the other day and I said fuck it, I’m gonna find that cup. And I did. I got a mint condition one on eBay for the paltry sum of $10.  And now Charley Hustle is hanging out with me at work. Life is good.

That’s the best thing I’ve heard all week. Awesome.

This is an awesome story and I am genuinely happy for you.  Also the odds of an Icee promo cup surviving  45 years in that condition have to be pretty slim, back of grandmas cupboard.  That print is so period perfect, the generic hat to avoid any team infringement $$ and ZERO retailer branding(unless it says Kmart on other side) is LOL.

What was the search term that found that bad boy?

Pretty sure I just searched for "Pete Rose Icee cup". As to the condition, there's a black line inside the cup that aligns perfectly to the black circle outline of the baseball, which means it had another cup stacked inside it. There's no yellowing or cracking, so I imagine there was an unused sleeve of these things that got put away in a cabinet a long time ago.

I hate to admit it but this was somewhat of an emotional thing for me. My friends and I have been talking about how easy it can be to get worked up once you get past 50. I wound up sending a message to the seller with the cliff notes version of this story and she said it made her day.

So in addition to ju jitsu, my boy has been bitten by the chess bug. Once he’s hit his daily limit on Roblox, he’s on to YouTube watching chess videos or on chess.com playing other people.

I’ve been playing with him for about a year and he’s been getting better and better to the point that he’s winning at least 2/3 of the time.

(And yeah I suck).
