SMU AD Quits - Who needs a new Rolex?

CDC is obviously the big name here. I don't think he's leaving Texas but Jay is for sure giving him a phone call.

I also think that SMU can basically give a blank check to anyone in the country with both revenue sports looking good.

one would have to wonder how appealing the job is after they just fired a guy that got them into the ACC, got their football stajium expanded, hired the corch that got them into the football playoffs and otherwise seems to have been doing a good job

I know they can throw money at anyone, but generally AD jobs are not ones like corching where you job jump for every little opportunity to make a small advancement in status and pay and instead you hang out for long periods of time as long as the heat is not too hot

I know a lot of people will probably say well Hart was there 13 years and what did he do before now, but he did get them some decent years in BB with LB and he had Moody renovated and he made what looks to be their best possible BB hire recently too

I would think a lot of candidates would be wondering what exactly the expectations are and how realistic they are.....and I think a lot of candidates should know that Hart was hamstrung by Turner that was there for decades and was not all that proactive for a long number of years

i'll guess they have a plan in place

the timing seems interesting for "having a plan in place" though

Hartzell has not started yet and won't for a few more months....I would wonder did Hartzell ask them to clean the house up a bit before he started.....did he know Hart from dealings with SMU in general and SMU wanting in the Big 12 in the recent past and did not like him (or the opposite)

are the Big Cigars at SMU tired of Hart and Hartzell said "I give a shit about academics so clean your sports shit up before I start".......is Hart worried there will be an academic focus that will make athletics more difficult (doubtful)

does Hartzell really want to step in on day one and not have that position filled and that is one of the first things he has to deal with.....at a university that I believe is looking to make some academic advancements sooner than later....does a new AD want to start before his new boss (taking over for a guy that has been there 2 decades) starts.....and starts with what should be some high expectations all around

If CDC did leave, who do you go after?

Hart was fired?

I misspoke on that...

reports are he is stepping down, but he is only 60 and makes $560,000 a year and just completed one of the best seasons for SMU in a long time and in a lot of ways including fundraising and facilities.....perhaps he is wanting to go out on top, spend more time with the wife or grand kids, has some "issue", wants to "take some time" before going elsewhere for another 5 or 6 years....who knows

he is also getting a new president that has been very supportive of athletics at Texas (and should know that SMU alumni have expectations) vs. Turner that was indifferent for a long time.....so it seems like an odd time to leave

No I know we are. Just like I know you made some bizarre, inconsequential comment in the other thread about how it would never happen and about how amazing Texas is or what the fuck ever.

Let me go on record plain and clear: I don't think it happens.

Let me also go on record plain and clear:  That phone call is happening and it's absolutely a possibility.

No, it is not absolutely a possibility. Get your head out of your ass. It's as possible as Trump resigning to be President of Panama.

This feels like a personal / family matter thing.

Like either someone in those categories has the cancer or a terminal / degenerative disease or drug addiction.

I think they have really good FB/MBK coaches in place, but the chances of them sneaking into the CCG much less the playoff again are really low. You have Clemson and Miami plus various annual upstarts like Louisville or one of the NC schools. So football probably peaked with a CCG loss followed by a CFP blowout loss. They're looking at Pop Tarts type upside for a while.

In basketball, there might be better hope to make an occasional at-large NCAA appearance now that they're in the ACC. Still, it's hard to see them do much more than a first weekend exit.

Not a bleak situation at all, but also a tough one for a new AD to manage given fundraising and attendance pressures.

Boy you’re all over the place. Hart wasn’t fired. Turner wasn’t indifferent to athletics. SMU isn’t getting fucking CDC.

No, I made an inconsequential comment about how inconsequential interest in SMU football is. Which is true. SMU is a small private school with a small alumni base. Since professional sports took over the interest of the average sports fan in big metropolitan areas - including Dallas - college sports can't really compete for eyeballs. Which happened about 60 years ago.

Who gives a rat's ass if the phone call happens? It's a possibility the same way it's a possibility I could be railing Shakira this summer while she's in Houston.

It's a hypothetical argument that no serious person should entertain. Nobody can prove that they discussed the job unless they make it public. Given their past history together, it's not beyond the realm of possibilities that they talk to each other, but it doesn't mean they discussed the job.

And an uninteresting hypothetical argument to boot. Unless you're someone with SMU affiliations with no realistic perspective on their actual place in the realm of athletics prestige. CDC can recommend an assistant for the job. If Hartzell wants a CDC clone that's the closest he's going to get.

Personally, I think the Rice AD is going to end up being a good one. He hasn't been on the job long enough to make an impact yet, and it's tough sledding. SMU is a much better job than Rice from an athletics standpoint. Maybe in 3 or 4 years he'll have made enough of a difference bigger fish will come calling. But unlike CDC, he ain't getting a phone call.

Would you trade in your watch on the right for the one on the left? Sure, the brand on the left makes some nice watches too and some of them look eerily similar to the ones from the brand on the right. Do you take the phone call from the dealer when you're wearing the watch on the right?

Hartzell, if for no other reason, would make the call to see who CDC would recommend. CDC knows everyone and who is an up and comer.

SMU and UT were founded by the same person and owned by the same company?

No, the brand values are vastly different. Only people wearing the lesser micro brand watches make the argument that they are essentially the same.

This was my thought as well. If they left on good terms, Jay would pick CDC's brain.
