yeah, this roster was definitely assembled with offense in mind, and the hiring of frank haith would seem to support the idea that the identity of this team is supposed to lie on the offensive side of the ball. but as either ravich or dykes pointed out last night, Texas is 13th nationally in iso possessions in offense. we don’t run a ton of set plays, we just employ concepts and trust our players to do their thing and make it happen. it’s not actually a terrible MO on its face, but where it becomes a problem is when there’s no accountability for low iq play and bad shots, especially when these things are happening repeatedly. we could basically run the same offense we’ve been running all year, and if our HC was even 20% more demanding that we look for and take good shots then i’d imagine we’d be at 6 or 7 conference wins right now not on the bubble.

It was assembled with offense in mind which we need guys to put the ball in the basket.  Geesh, I did hear Texas is 13th nationally in “ISO” possession.  We do not run set plays so this is when the guys start playing iso ball which we’ve seen that often. I cannot blame the guys, that’s on coach. Sadly some of the players are not use to playing iso ball, they are use to playing team ball.  When you play an iso offense, assist opportunities are harder for the PG.  Also, pure “ATHLETICISM” alone will not win ball games.

That last garbage 3 as time expired covered the 4.5 point spread by Kentucky and sent the O/U from under to over.  This is why I don't bet on college basketball.

That groin thing sure is lingering.

If you ever played sports and suffered one you'd understand.  It hurts like a sob and is easy to reinjure.

Wasn’t it called something else when he first got hurt?

I don’t remember it being a groin originally.

Don't forget the desparation 3 that their big hit in the 1st half. Outside of those two and the other 3 at the end of the game, Kentucky shot 3-21 during non garabage time. I think the problem I really have with Terry is that this team is just so bad at defense and especially defensive rebounding.

Man, watching that game last night was interesting. I had no emotional tie to the outcome, but it was enjoyable none the less. There is so much bad on this Texas team, especially when Kaluma is out and no one is making any shots outside of Johnson. At least, Mark showed up tonight. If he could be that consistent 2nd scorer, we'd likely be over .500 in conference right now. Still, the biggest issue on this team was Williams throwing every Texas player out of his way for offensive rebound after offensive rebound. I don't understand how Onyema is just so fundamentally stupid at basketball, he had no idea what he was doing on the court last night, but still managed 4 and 5, which is something because Texas won by 4 and that was the most defensive rebounds for the team.

Also, Julian Larry has become almost unplayable, just think the level of athleticism needed to play guard in the SEC is something he's not capable of delivering. I was wrong about him, and would like to see Weaver get those minutes back, while he's a below average offensive player, Weaver has SEC level athleticitism.

More Pryor and Codie. they also have SEC level athleticism.

I will be “excited” to see Weaver come back. Please give him grace if he returns because I’ve seen negative comments when he was playing.

Larry is not a big threat on offense and I don’t think they recruited him for that. He can play defense, get them in the offense and do other things.  We don’t need everyone on the team doing the same thing. Having athleticism will not just win ball games.

We have Tre, Pope, Mark, Arthur our main scorers who lack things as well.  None of the players will have a perfect game each night. I will not bash any of the guys because I still know, as we all know, what the big issue is.  Right now, I am hoping they stay positive and win out to make the tournament. These are the guys we have and need all of them to achieve this.🤘🏻

Can we get a roller coaster graph so we will know where this team is from game to game?

It would be easier to tell whether Texas is going to the Sweet Sixteen in the NCAA Tournament or the NIT.

Crazy bc Larry seemed like the answer 2nd half of the Aggie game but clearly was an outlier.

I was a Weaver guy but at this point his lack of shooting spells doom for and smidge of offensive spacing and flow this team manages to achieve.   I don't think he's playable to make a serious run, athleticism or no.

Agree we need more Pryor.

And we really miss Mitchell with all these Kent minutes.

We could go down the line of each player and all would need improvement on something (offense/defense), but they are not perfect. I don't have to talk about the offense because we already know.

Curious of why Mitchell left Texas.🤔 Just like everyone else I looked Kent up. Believe it or not he thrived in his previous coach offense. They actually had an offense and didn't play iso ball. We get frustrated with him but I'm pretty sure he’s frustrated too especially coming to this type of offense.

At this point, hope they all can pull together and win these games, so they can try to make the tourney.🤘🏻

Terry didn’t give a time estimate on the absence of Weaver, who injured his right hip in an 87-82 loss to Auburn Jan. 7. He did say that "it's going to take a little time to get him back."

A UK fan in front of me at the game bet the over and screamed in elation after that shot went in, "Even when I lose, I win!"

It's ironic because allegedly the NIL guys were done with Mitchell but he'd turn this team into a top 20 team.

We miss his rebounding bigtime. Dude basically averaged a double double and apparently that wasn't enough for the money guys.

Oh DetroitHorn, you say a lot of stupid stuff and this is certainly up there. Dillon Mitchell is currently averaging 10 and 6 at Cincinnati. Unless he’s bringing a better HC with him, adding him to this team would have a snowball’s chance in hell of making this a top 20 team.

Dillon Mitchell entered the transfer portal on April 15.  Jayson Kent signed with Texas on April 17.  Arthur Kaluma signed on June 28.  My guess is that if we kept Mitchell, we would have signed Kent but then missed out on Kaluma.  And I would rather have Kaluma than either of them.

The big loss for me is Tyrese Hunter.  People hated on him, but he is a much better player than either Pope or Larry.  Hunter has been a starter on an E8, S16 and R32 team and his Memphis team would probably beat this Texas team.  Here are all of their stats over the last 6 weeks:

Tyrese Hunter (entered portal April 15)

Jordan Pope (signed April 25)

Julian Larry (signed April 14)

Hunter is shooting the ball better than either of these guys. But more importantly, he actually impacts the game. He is a competitor and would match the fire coming from Tre Johnson.  Pope and Larry are both role players and there is zero leadership from them. I can't stand having guards like that. When we get beat, it is usually by teams with guards who are actually leading their teams.

The downside with Hunter is you get some turnovers. But I can live with that when he is being aggressive and trying to make an impact on the game.

Oh well, that ship has sailed. I blame RT for letting him get away.

Rebounding is our teams biggest weakness

Mitchell is a good rebounder

He averaged 9.6 and 7.5 for us last year, which is close to a double double and also doubles Kent’s production this year

We’ve lost 3 games to ranked teams by 5 points or less. 5 points is the difference between Kent and Mitchell’s averages this season

If we won those 3 games we’d be 8-5 in conference and almost certainly ranked in the top 20

Just straight facts without any name calling or nastiness

Bravo, sir. This may be even dumber than your first post.

first, averaging 9.6 and 7.5 is not “nearly averaging a double double”. mitchell did record eight double doubles last season which is nothing to sneeze at, but let’s not act like he was 2010 damion james.

looking at his game logs for texas and his “best” double double saw him get 14 and 11 from the SF/PF spot. his three best games (all double doubles) were against delaware state, a&m cc, and houston christian. he recorded three double doubles in 18 games during conference play.

you can try and rewrite who dillon mitchell was and act like he was some double double machine, but in reality he was a less athletic kai jones with none of the offensive acumen, less of a motor, and the jump shot of doj balbay. and if we keep him that means we don’t get kaluma, our best overall player. so, i’m gonna say no thanks to keeping mitchell over kaluma, as well as rewriting her history of who he was/is as a player.

I suppose it is possible that if Tyrese Hunter and Dillon Mitchell stayed, then we get neither Jayson Kent or Julian Larry.  The UT guys left and then the Indiana State guys signed just days later.  If Hunter and Mitchell stayed, then maybe they look elsewhere in that case.

And then we still have some slots open and still get Jordan Pope and Arthur Kaluma.  That would be a best case scenario.

That would give us:

  • Starters:  Hunter + Tre + Mark + Mitchell + Kaluma
  • Bench: Pope + Weaver + Shedrick + Onyema

That is a better team IMO.  Not sure it is a ton better though.

Tyrese needed a fresh start...I'm not sure Tyrese has the numbers he has now in Terry's "offense".

This.  I don't think he was run off, but really, he and Texas/RT needed to part ways.

That's fair, but I think Hunter also gets credit for improving his game every year.  His 3P% has gone from 27.4% --> 33.7% --> 34.3% --> 41.9%.   He is clearly putting in work.
