Hit up Sips and Sounds yesterday which was pretty good.  How do I put this... a very "safe" festival experience when you think of AJR and Benson Boone.  Still they were good.  Really liked Arcy Drive and the DJ Sets.

Went to the 101x Homegrown event today at Hotel Vegas.  Saw Variety, Prehuman and Grocery Bag.

Hitting up GSD&M tomorrow.

We're planning to hit up Red River on Thursday afternoon.  I'm thinking parking is a non-starter.  But, my wife will be coming from her job south and I'll be doing the same from north.  I'd like to meet in the middle, maybe near campus and uber down, but I'm not sure where we would park.  I don't mind paying for a garage but what's available in that general area (35th to 12th, maybe Lamar to Speedway)?

I would think you could find street parking near ACC?

PSA - if you are free at 5pm today, go by C-Boys on SoCo and get some free crawfish!  Free crawfish and Zydeco Music courtesy of Lafayette Live. Free Lonestar I think if you RSVP.  Anyhow that will be my SXSW kick off... with a drift by Continental and SXSJ to take pics of lineups for timing.

I'm pretty sure Lone Star is a no-go in Austin these days.  Beer guy at HEB told me they sold to Miller and they're a month or so out from production.

At any rate, I'm out for today, too much work to get cleared up before Thursday.

Interesting.  I was at Hotel Vegas on Sunday and was going to grab a Lone Star but they only had PBR (at least outside).  The Hotel Vegas lineup today is absurd.  I really wish I could go.

All I can tell you is when it comes to parking, find a place that might be far but reasonably walkable.  It keeps working for me.  Do I have to walk a distance?  Yeah, but at least I don't circle forever and then can get out pretty easily when I want.  I'm going to do that tomorrow for the Marshall Amp show at Mohawk.  Let's see if my strategy is still functional.

apparently there was a delay as they shift production to a different facility and a lot of bars didn't get their lone star delivery for sxsw.

So... when getting a turd like PBR, am I the only one that drops a lime in it?  Feel like an idiot asking but I can pretend I'm drinking Pacifico or something.

Excited to start music tomorrow. Got a handful of bands to check out so far, but Thursday is still under construction. Tomorrow will be cumbia at the Rivian day stage, attempt to get into Mohawk for a couple heavier bands (the important ones), then over the the Vegas patio for more cumbia. These hips don't lie. And I love that Hotel Vegas is the #1 proponent for cumbia in the city. Friday I gave in and bought Grupo Frontera tickets for the Moody Amphiteater. Never seen them live so I'll check that out.

Let me know what happens with the Mohawk show.

Jimmy - looks like your kid has an early show I can hit up!  5;45 today at Mohawk!  RSVP on phone.  Got a hall pass from wife, so I think I am going to try my first cap metro train ride today.

Also!- Is it DEE spitz or DIE spitz pronunciation.  I think you addressed this somewhere, but Kevin Conner the moring DJ on Sun Radio pondered this question the other day.  I thought you said DEE Spitz but WTF do I know.

---------------------

Here is the blackboard at Continental with tiny as shit writing, the SXSJ day by day lineup, and the SoCo Stomp poster. Fot those of you trying to move around and getting a better timeline of who plays when.  On the SXSJ poster bands at bottom open and top is closer.  Have fun out there. And LOOK EVERYWHERE when crossing the street.  I saw two close calls in 3 hours yesterday. ANd please! for the sake of your families and the post surgery recovery nurses downtown, do NOT get on one of those fucking scooters.  Shit tons of head injuries from those bitches.

Whoo Hooo - old people spring break is here!

Rhymes with "eye".  I have no idea if that's correct in German.  I don't even know why they picked that name.  They tell me nothing.  What was Kevin Connor doing talking about them?  I'm not sure they've gotten much airplay on Sun, at least compared to KUTX.

The German 'Die' is pronounced DEE, not DYE.

Fwiw since this apparently has nothing to do with the band name :)

I used to say DEE until a local music photographer corrected me that they say DYE.

Here's one... local Austin latin singer lluvii - tell me how to pronounce the name.

Well Dad... yeah... What good is being in a punk band if you tell you Dad everything?  😉

You know,  I cannot recall what Conner was talking about, but I thought it was a show?  I think I had just tuned in, but the query perked my ear.  I thought it had to be like, "Die motherfucker Die!"

Hey all.

I bought Luck Reunion tickets but I ended up not being able to go.  They're $150 each (face value), so $300 for the pair.  I'll eat the fees and taxes and will throw in the off-site shuttle parking pass (5 minute shuttle running constantly).  The booze is free at the event.  DM me if interested.

It's truly a special event and I am bummed I have to miss this year.

Marshall Amp show was good stuff.  Had some nice giveaways and a good eclectic mix.  Only stuck around for the first four acts but one was Freak Slug which was on my list to see.  My friend stuck around for Fleshwater (opener on the Deftones North American tour) and he said they were great.  This was the line at about 12:20 but when left at about 1:40, you could just walk in provided you had RSVPed.  Line was done.

These guys were GREAT at 13th Floor.  Some of the other bands, not so much.  Snotty garage rock, tight as hell, somewhere between Oasis and The Stooges.

Thanks for this one. They’ve got a shot ton of shows the next couple of days. I’ll check them out.

Met up with a fellow Shagster at SoCo stomp and caught the Big Freedia set.  Very entertaining and a fun show - crowd definitely into it.  New Orleans Bounce.  Not what I would expect to see at C-Boys.

saw wand, frankie & the witch fingers, and die spitz at 13th floor. all very good. saw several other unremarkable bands on red river as well. nuclear daisies at yellow jacket last night was good. droning psych rock, they're local. back at it today.

I've really been wanting to see Nuclear Daisies live.  They very much remind me of something from the 90s and I can't put my finger on it.  Queen Serene has a different droning sound but I really like seeing them live.  Prehuman is somewhat adjacent.  Wall of guitars, droning shoegaze sound.  They often play bills together and you can usually see them at Hotel Vegas, Chess Club, 13th Floor, etc.

That outdoor "stage" created a giant clusterfuck.  Red River was shut down, and I don't think that was part of the plan.

Which outdoor stage?

13th Floor.  Every band but the headliner (ahem) played inside.  DS played on the sidewalk, and approximately one billion people swarmed Red River, forcing the cops to shut it down for a couple of blocks.  I was stage left, so it didn't affect me, but I imagine other clubs etc. were pissed.  Photo shot by a friend doesn't really capture the mess, but it's all I have:

May be an image of one or more people, speaker and crowd

W O W that looks crazy.  You may think it does not capture the mess but it captures the mess.  F that.

I would have thought there would be some kind of permit required?  It basically turned into punk rock Pecan Street Festival.

Oh, I did get to see the most pretentious insufferable band I've ever heard an hour or so earlier:  "fantasy of a broken heart" out of (you guessed it) Brooklyn.  Spoilered for sanity:

Spoiler

i saw fantasy as well and they were awful. that scene outside was something, i must have been standing right next to you because there weren't many people stage left.

I saw some videos of that yesterday and I was very surprised they just put them on the patio and pointed the speakers outwards. Never seen that before. Glad I got to see them at Mohawk instead, that sidewalk didn't look like the best place to watch a set.

I tried to see La Securite at Valhalla yesterday and didn't realize that stage/room was so small, it was backed up to the main door and people were just hanging out in the hallway. Couldn't get a good spot to listen but they seemed like they'd be worth a real shot tomorrow. Hopefully not all their shows are packed because they play 13th Floor tomorrow I believe.

Saw Los Juanos out of San Antonio later on at night and the blew me away. I've been hooked on SXSW music for about a decade now and don't think I've ever heard Tejano being played. Can't remember the last time I saw a band with members under 50 playing Tejano either, but they were fun, and had a good crowd response over at Lambert's. A little energy does the genre well, kinda sounded punk how loud/fast they played it. For the first time in my life I heard them describe an attempt at a "Cumbia Rock Opera" and I was in.

Only two bands left on my list for this weekend are "Ali" and "The Thing". Don't know if I can make a 1 am showcase these days though, my back and feet got a good 3 hours in them before I just want to go home.

Yeah, I alternated sitting on the bench or leaning on some road boxes just off your camera to the right, by that guitar amp.

we were there too.  fun show.  Colton House is a pretty nice setup.  Low key and not crowded since it's a bit off the beaten path.

One of my kids dated the guy who has been owning/building that spot out.  It's nice, but I'm not sure it has legs.  Maybe as a condo/apt revenue source.

Was just talking to a neighbor about the lineup at Colton House.  Tempted to go over there and check it out.  We're about to roll out to South Congress and just wander up and down.  Good day for it.

Yeah @jimmyjazz its sort of hidden back there.  Wife and I went for cocktails maybe three weeks ago and the garage seemed full.  We'll see.  I always wonder if Freddo will make it, though

We were having this same conversation walking from Colton to C-Boys. They could transform that area and basically extend SoCo if they demolished the shitty, mostly empty shopping center where the temporary HEB was.

I think maybe this is happening?  I'll believe it when I see it.

So... went down to South Congress.  Lots of music going on from C-Boys to the bridge.  Some highlights... INOHA put on a good show at Guero's.  Missed Monobloc at SXSJ by 20 minutes.  Caught a bit of music at YETI but next door, there was a long line to see St. Vincent at Rivian.  We didn't have time to go to that but we walked over to the bridge where no one had realized that St. Vincent was right there, getting ready for her set.  You had a perfect view to just watch her rehearse and warm up.  Pretty cool.
