Can we wait more than 3 games to say shit like this please.

Meh. Max is already an AA and it’s not crazy to think Gaspo could be that level. His pedigree, recruiting, size and overall skillset are certainly indicative of someone on an AA path.

He started at Texas, no?

I think he was a student assistant at Texas but got his real coaching chops at then Southwest Texas State, before becoming their long-time head coach.

I'm listening to Roger and Zonk on texassports.com while watching the game on TV, so not sure other than when ESPN finally started covering college baseball, Gus and UT were regulars at Omaha.

I’m digging into it … espn first aired in 1979 and college basketball was first in 1979 but the CWS coverage started in 1980…

Texas didn’t make re CWS in 80 but advanced to the semis in 81, 82 and won as we know in 83. Texas also lost in the finals in 84…. Ive stopped checking but clearly he was referring to ESPN used the CWS to launch and Texas was a huge part of its success as a network early on.

Ty was a great guy; he played hard when he got the chance. The team made him captain.

I knew him pretty well; he always knew his baseball future was not as a player.

He wanted to coach and told Coach Gus so in his last year at Texas.

Gus helped him make that happen.

ESPN had no pro sports at the time.

They did a lot of college sports.

They help make college baseball a big-time sport by carrying games and the entire College World Series for the first time.

I knew that but the way he talked about it it sounded like maybe Texas CWS game mighta been the first ever college baseball broadcast or even the first broadcast period. I think it was more just what I found - espn covered the CWS and at that time Texas was a permanent fixture in Omaha. So Gus and Texas didn’t really start it but definitely a major factor early on.

I had no idea the outfield dimensions were significant and represented players and managers at the Rangers park. Really clever. Respeck.

Yeah. We're the best. We wake up and piss excellence.

In 1980 Hawaii beat Texas at the Austin Regional

We were shocked, it was our right to go to Omaha at the time.

Those were some great days for Texas Baseball.

Horns were in the CWS EVERY Year in the 80's except for '80 and '86. They were still in the tournament though in both of those years.

I added more to it, 81-84 Texas was semis, champs, finals (I didn’t look past 84). Those years I actually laid on the living room floor and watched Texas win, it’s when I fell in love with Texas baseball at the age of 7 - 10 years old.

Yeah it’s pretty clear what Ty meant was just when espn started covering the CWS Texas was it.

For me it was around 74 or 75, I was 9 or so.

Actually, it was 1988 that Texas didn't make the CWS, losing to California in the championship game of the Austin Regional.

I remember it well. Texas had the tying run at third and winning run at first, no outs in the ninth, when our best hitter named Patrick lined into a double play and a ground out ended the game one bater later.

A Cal fan came down and was yelling stuff and one of the girlfriends of a Texas player hit him with a big purse.

Hawaii ended up as runner up in Omaha that year

Well you see, there’s 9 innings to a game. You have to get 6 outs per full inning……

Travel curfew. Both these teams took a bus so I can’t imagine there is a curfew.
