David pierce effect am I right

No doubt he had a HUGE influence on recruiting.  Many of our signees this cycle were guys that Texas and A&M had committed before the coaching changes, and he was able to scoop them up for us.

Fun times in Houston today.

Rice beat Sam Houston in their home opener 6-1, after three straight losses in a Tournament in Puerto Rico.

Temperature in Houston is 30 degrees and a windchill at 18 degrees.

When new Washington skipper Eddie Smith won his first game as a Division 1 baseball coach I turned to my girlfriend and said he really should quit today as a 1.000 winner.

Got some USC @ Fullerton action on ESPN+.  Color guy just praised a baserunner for his "smart awareness."

In other news, Fullerton has become an embarrassingly abysmal catastrophe of a program.  240 or so RPI last year, and 1-6 so far this year.

you post a lot of pilot stuff don’t you? Do you get to their games? We make it to a couple a year probably. Nice little ball field.

I've not been since they added lights.  Might have to make that trip this year.

Washington State / Iowa are playing in Cleburne, Texas and the Iowa radio broadcast is student run and is awesome.    "He lost his lid in the attempt..."

Jose Cruz Jr. killed Rice baseball?

Matt Bragga era was just as brutal although the covid year hurt him. Rice would be pretty dumb not to reach out to Pierce this offseason. Sad to see what has happened to that program after everything Wayne accomplished and built there

I think Pierce is a good fit for that program. I certainly think he's a better choice that Lance Berkman who was rumored to want the job before. If you had told me Bloomquist at ASU would have done a better job than Cruz at Rice I'd have been shocked that would be the outcome.

Didn’t realize Cruz was on his 3rd year and been that awful, Damn! Bragga was a terrible hire with no connections to this area and it killed whatever area pipelines they used to to hit for talent.
I can imagine NIL is none too helpful to their efforts to keep Houston Area talent home.

Astros Classic this weekend if interested.

2025 schedule (all times ET)

Friday, Feb. 28

Saturday, Mar. 1

Sunday, Mar. 2

Past tournament winners

Here's a look down memory lane of the classic's winners and their opponents. Rice has won the most tournament titles with six, followed by Baylor (four) and TCU (three).

No team that has won the tournament has gone on to win the Men's College World Series in the same year. Nine teams have reached Omaha, including 2004 Texas, which lost in the championship series.

Don't know the connections that brought Iowa and Wazzu to Cleburne, but I do remember that Pete Incaviglia is the manager and Rudy Jaramillo is the hitting coach for the independent minor league team they have.

The Frisco tournament is still at the top for me for these early tournaments.  Good setting, outside, perfect size for one of these, not an echoing tomb.

D1 baseball's coverage leaves a lot out there though.  They have no field mics or audience mics.  So the coverage is turning what should be a good setting into what sounds like two guys broadcasting in a hallway.

Tech and Illinois are both wearing their white home uniforms.  This shouldn't be a hard task people.

Tech, you freaking morons, you are the visiting team, put your road unis on and stop being stupid.

Neither of those things will happen. Tech.

Illini up 4-3

I think Tech is wearing road uniforms. In the sun they look white, but in the shade they look like a light gray almost blue tint.

Tech left fielder just nonchalanted a routine pop-up to shallow left and missed it.  Bounced off the heel of his glove.

Illinois scored to go ahead 5-4 b8th

Are we  not starting on time then?

Unless you’re the first game, nobody ever starts on time in tournaments
