South Carolina Upstate at High Point is on ESPNU for some reason.  Looks like dozens of fans in attendance and probably a similar number watching on tv.

Arizona is up 1-0 on Arizona St early, looking to tie up the series.  They're both tied, along with Kansas, for 2nd in the Big 12 at 7-3.

Cal tied Clemson in the 6th, trying to salvage one game out of that series.  GT is well on their way to a sweep at Stanford, up 9-1.  Okie State is up 2-0 early on K-State looking to sweep the DH today and the series.

And an absolute bomb by K-State to tie it at 2.

Worse than that Stanford series in 2019? That was brutal from a production standpoint. Like they got a local bay area High School to run it.

I actually like the Stanford radio crew. It's done by students, and is fairly entertaining to the 5-10 Stanford games I listen to a year.

Only camera was from behind the plate, scoreboard looked like I jumped in a Time Machine back to 1995

D1 Chat starts at 12PM today.   Free to public until they paywall.

They said kind of an interesting thing on the podcast this morning. That they are a bit unsure of Texas because things have been going a bit too perfectly so far, while acknowledging that is a ridiculous thing to say. Especially with our injuries. But I kind of get it. Can we really just go along beating everybody by 5-3 or 7-4 scores all year? We are not really separating ourselves or being dominant, just winning.

We'll see. But there are fewer and fewer great teams left to play before the post season. Only pig is in the top 10 left on our schedule, granted it is on the road and they are #1. Though Auburn might be there by the time we play them I guess.

It's really not that weird when you have dominant pitching.

This is my biggest concern.

I'm going to have a heart attack if we lose one or two of those guys to injuries and are forced to bring Cody F'n Howard in during a Regional game.🤬

Sure would be nice to be on the positive side of a Will Bednar-type situation this postseason after getting dominated by opposing pitchers under Pierce.

Pertinent chat notes.  Not much Texas info.   Note they think 13 SEC wins qualifies for the postseason.

I know we pounded Missouri pretty pretty hard this weekend, but doesn't Texas deserve to be #1.  They have better series wins and I for one don't want the #1 Albatross hanging around our collective necks

We debated Texas vs. Arkansas for the top spot quite a bit, and our staff was split pretty evenly -- but also, all of us saw a case for the other team as well. UT has those two super-loud series wins at home (2/3 vs LSU, sweeping Georgia), but Arkansas also has two quality series wins against ranked teams on the ROAD (at Ole Miss, sweeping Vandy), and doing that on the road is also pretty loud. I think their resumés are actually very close, and we already had the Hogs ranked higher so it made sense to me just to slide them up a spot. But if we had gone with Texas based on the LSU and Georgia series wins, I would have had no issue with that either.

Not saying we're back, but boy was that a gust of fresh air on Saturday.  Will 13 SEC wins cut it this year to make the playoffs, or will the selection committee be more harsh with the bigger conferences this year?  What is your gut feeling for minimum wins for the at-large SEC teams?

If A&M gets to 13 league wins, it will definitely make the field, IMO, because the Aggies would have had to beat some mammoth RPI teams to get to that point. Your RPI would probably be closer to 20 than it would be 50 at that stage of the game. Saturday's performances were mighty impressive, namely with Sorrell raking and Bear Harrison coming into his own. But let's see the Aggies put together two-straight solid weeks, and then we can have a discussion about turning the corner. A step forward? Sure. that's it for now.

Seeing a lot of West Coast kids commiting/playing on SEC schools, has this always been the case and I am now noticing? Or is NIL grabbing the best of the West and bringing them out to the SEC for $, better atmospheres, better facilities, etc...

Tim -- It's definitely more prominent than it once was. I do think realignment will help the West Coast schools keep some of those kids at home, but the fact of the matter is outside of Oregon State, the atmospheres and facilities in conferences like the SEC, ACC and Big 12 are better. That is going to lead to more and more kids from out that direction heading East to play college baseball.

LSU's Pitching staff and just their overall outlook as a team right now. (0 ER over the weekend is insane btw)

Kendall touched on this above, but I'll go a step further: I am really in on this LSU team. I love the length and variety in their lineup, and obviously you have to be excited about the sheer talent in their rotation, but also in the bullpen. I know there have been occasional bumps along the way with that pitching staff, but I think those are expected growing pains with young arms, and jeez they're still sitting there at 30-3!

Was there any discussions around UTSA for a top 25 spot? Pat Hallmark's squad is looking really good and has a RPI inside the top 30.

Hunter -- The Roadrunners still have some work to do. I actually really like UTSA's offense overall, but getting run-ruled twice against DBU a couple of weeks ago kind of soured us a bit on UTSA from a Top 25 standpoint. That series sweep over FAU does look a little louder now after seeing the Mac's team did against ECU last weekend.

How about the job Jim Schlossnagle has done at Texas! That guy can coach and has won everywhere!

Schloss really has done a great job with this team. It's not easy to get a team to immediately buy into your way of doing things and culture, but it seems like the Longhorns' players were eager to see some improved structure. In addition to Jim, I feel like pitching coach Max Weiner once again is doing a phenomenal job with a pitching staff. He's the pitching whisperer, for sure. Really impressed with those guys across the board. They didn't skip a beat without AR and MB this past weekend.

Do you think A&M can build off this past weekend, or do you feel like it was a one-day doubleheader aberration?

Chris -- we shall see. I don't take much from the weekend other than A&M is still fighting and hasn't thrown in the towel. The one thing I did really like about A&M is that Bear Harrison is getting into a groove offensively and Caden Sorrell did Caden Sorrell things. If those two are going to hit like that, that lineup has very few holes now. Even Ben Royo is making some offensive strides.

Is Oklahoma a regional host? Or are they finally getting exposed for a weak schedule?

OU is not out of the hosting mix, but it really needs to win that series against Vandy. Sitting at 5-7 in the league, if you win that series, you gotta feel like you'll do well against Missouri the following weekend. So, this series for me is a swing series for the Sooners. RPI is still in a good spot at 18 -- but league record, as of today, is an issue.

Does Michael Earley lose his job if the Aggies somehow make it into the postseason?

If the Aggies make the NCAA tournament, I would be willing to bet money he's back. That would mean the Aggies likely won series against two of Arkansas, Texas, LSU and Georgia. That would be a pretty strong way to finish the regular season and make the NCAA tourney. I'm still not a believer until I see much more from the Aggies outside of one day.

D1 Chat

Is Texas A&M back in the NCAA Tournament discussion after a sweep of South Carolina? I think so!

Hi Eric -- the Aggies are definitely back in the discussion after finding a way to take that series at Tennessee and then doing what they really needed to do this weekend, which was sweep South Carolina. It wasn't easy, but they got it done. Now at 6-9 in the SEC and inside the top 50 in the RPI, they're definitely alive for an at-large spot, but they're gonna have to really earn it with series left at Arkansas and at Texas the next two weeks, with other series looming vs. LSU and at Georgia. That's grueling, but if they survive it and get to 12 or 13 SEC wins, they'll probably get in.

Hey Fitt, just curious if you’re still selling that Texas stock you were two weeks ago? I’m sure there’s a few people who’d take it off your hands lol. All kidding aside, is Texas the favorite to win the SEC now? The schedule down the stretch is pretty favorable compared to Arkansas, Georgia and LSU.

Ha! Is it too late to buy some of that stock back? I'm afraid the ship has sailed and I'm left holding the bag -- I blame my panic on the tariffs (and on Max Belyeu's injury, obviously). So very impressed with the way Texas has weathered the Belyeu injury and also the A-Rod injury, although it's good to see Rodriguez back now. I'm a convert; these Horns just have that it factor. They just win. And obviously they are very talented too, but man that grit is a separator.

how about the Aggies this past weekend.

Crazy weekend for the Aggies. Now it gets real again this weekend with a quick road trip to Arkansas followed by a series at Texas, and of course, LSU at home. What a hellacious three-week stretch for the Aggies, but there's no doubt this offense is clicking right now. As much as Caden Sorell's return has meant to this team, I'd argue the emergence of Bear Harrison has been as important. He's hitting north of .400 in SEC play with premium power. I still have some serious concerns about A&M's bullpen however.
If Texas can hit 17 wins in the SEC, does that guarantee a Top 8 seed?
If Texas only wins 17 league games, it would mean it finished the season pretty poorly. The Longhorns are already at 13 league wins and have 15 conference games left. So, I like the Longhorns' chances of eclipsing that 17-win mark. As for their case as a whole, looking to be in a very strong position for a top 8 seed down the stretch. Those guys just keep getting pieces to step up in big situations. Yesterday, it was Grayson Saunier being thrust into the action and delivering.

Any realistic chance Oklahoma can fall and not be a host? SEC is loaded with locked-up hosts already.
Of course. RPI is 25 and the Sooners still have Georgia, Ole Miss and Texas on the menu as opponents the remaining few weeks. Win two or all three of those series and the Sooners most definitely will be strongly in the hosting discussion.
React
What’s a regional matchup you want to see?

If I could setup the postseason perfectly, I would have Texas A&M go to TCU as a two or three seed, and have that regional paired with Texas.

Better have the popcorn ready.
How much of a threat is Auburn to host a Super? Feels like they’re on a good run right now but I think fans should hope to host a regional and be pleasantly surprised if they do better than that. Or do you view this squad as a legit CWS threat?
Bryan -- if Auburn can consistently pitch the way it did against a very solid LSU lineup this past weekend on the Plains, there's no doubt the bar for this Auburn team is a trip to Omaha, and potentially even more. I'm intrigued to see how they pitch (on the road) against Texas this weekend.

Does UTSA have an at-large bid locked up already?

UTSA is in very very good shape right now with a 23 RPI and a dominant league record thus far. That's a scary, scary team, particularly offensively, in a regional, too

Quote

College baseball teams with 42- and 99-game losing streaks met in a doubleheader. Everyone left a winner

The Yeshiva University Maccabees had lost 99 games in a row. The Lehman College Lightning were winless in their last 42. Tuesday, these epic college baseball losing streaks collided in a doubleheader.

Both teams ended the day as winners.

Before the first pitch of the afternoon opener, Lehman coach Chris Delgado and Yeshiva coach Jeremy Renna met at home plate. The pair’s shared hardship made for “a certain harmony,” Renna said.

“We often talk about not being able to understand what another person goes through in life without walking a mile in another man’s shoes, and he can understand where I am, and I can understand where he is,” Renna said.

Yeshiva, a Modern Orthodox Jewish school with campuses in Manhattan and the Bronx, entered Tuesday with 99 consecutive losses dating to Feb. 27, 2022. Lehman, a public university in the Bronx, had lost 42 straight games since May 9, 2023. Neither Delgado nor Renna had notched a win in their collegiate coaching careers.

In the first game, Yeshiva blew a two-run lead in the final inning, losing 7-6 and extending its skid to 100 games. It was the Lightning’s first win since Delgado was on the team as a pitcher, a victory shortstop Ryan Rosa called “something magical.”

“I’m happy that all this adversity and triumph is happening at this moment, when we’re so young that we can bring this out into our future selves and learn what it’s like to be down and out and digging ourselves out of our own hole,” Rosa said about the last two years. “Baseball’s just another form of life. You go through many adversities, and you just have to build yourself out of it.”

In the nightcap, Yeshiva again built another large lead before Lehman stormed back. But for the first time in more than three years, the Maccabees held on to win 9-5, much to the thrill of a rowdy Yeshiva fan base.

Delgado and Renna said the hardships and near-misses of early-season disappointments set the stage for Tuesday’s triumphs. Renna repeatedly called it a quirk of math that made the games so monumental.

Had Yeshiva not blown back-to-back doubleheaders in extra innings against John Jay in early March (the second of which ended on a walk-off passed ball on a strike three), its streak would not have received national attention.

“I could tell you it’s math, but as a believer in higher authority,” Renna said, “I believe the math led us here to do good things and show off our university and the things we like to do well.

“God works in funny ways.”

Lehman’s Game 1 starter, Justin Chamorro, tossed a complete game with a season-high 13 strikeouts for his first career win. And though a matchup between winless Division III teams might have seemed like a low-stakes outing, he knew the losing streaks piqued interest around the college baseball world.

“My goal always when I pitch is to finish a game, no matter what, to give my team an opportunity to win,” Chamorro said Wednesday. “That I did that yesterday, on a big stage with a lot on the line for both teams, I feel very happy. I feel very, very happy with how everything came to be. I wouldn’t have it any other way. It has to be a top two (moment) in my college career.”

In an email, Delgado said that although Tuesday’s win was nice, the Lightning program is going through a rebuild and its main goal is to lay the foundation for years to come.

The Maccabees, meanwhile, will get to enjoy their winning streak for more than two weeks, as the program is off until April 25 because of the Passover break.

“We have people pulling for each other not just as teammates but as brothers, and when you finally crest the mountain and finally get there, it’s a lot of love and hugs and thank-yous and I-love-yous,” Renna said.

“The mountaintop for some guys in sports is the championship,” he added. “For us, the mountain we’ve been climbing on is to win a baseball game, which is as elementary as it gets.”
