Is women's/female basketball the next UFC?

Don't forget rock dumb and racist. You're a triple threat.

MMA rose in stature because boxing corrupted itself into irrelevance. The audience was always there and just shifted from one form of 1v1 combat to another. That's a sport as old as the species. The talk about WBB being the next huge thing reminds me about how soccer will soon dominate the nation. Been hearing that one my whole life. And I'm pretty old.

In fairness the jump in viewership can be traced directly to games involving CC last season. Her games were nearly responsible for the entire percentage jump.  An ACL injury would be devastating for the league.

The biggest growth potential for sustained success is to start chasing the female viewer instead of basketball fans. Prior to last season, their biggest fan demographic was old dudes (probably dads who grew up watching their daughters play or it’s their fetish).

Hey guys did you know women are less athletic than men? Nelly Korda would still kick every single one one of your asses at golf playing from your tees.

Had to google Nell Korda.

Like soccer, WBB has risen dramatically in popularity. That's not to say that either will ever be a "huge thing" but they don't need to be, it's good that they are improving in their level of interest. Comparisons to NFL, MLB, NBA, CFB, and MCBB is unfair and unnecessary. Neither have to reach that level to be formidable in interest and viewership. I'm happy to see WBB becoming more popular. I've tuned into a few games and have been impressed with some of the crowds.

They do need to reach that level when they are being paid like they have that level of support.  At some point, the multi-million dollar annual losses will no longer be sustainable (losses expected to grow again this season).

They are not a AAA club playing to 5,000 seat stadiums and traveling by bus.

This is incredibly inaccurate. The lowest paid player for the Stars is making $775k.

Also I don't even know wtf this is. The salary for club pros? Those aren't professional golfers.

What kind of made up bs is that? Average NHL salary is $3.8M. NHL players on average makes more in 3 games than WNBA players do all season. I’m fine with that considering ratings and revenues. The conversation is that it’s becoming more popular which is good. It will never come close to the major men’s sports and again, I think that’s fine. With all the streaming networks now there’s room for pretty much every sport to be broadcast and increase interest. If you don’t like it don’t watch, I’m talking about people who just have to come out and criticize that these games are broadcast at all.

The problem is you're believing the AI overview Google gives you (which says the average NHL salary is $123,905). The AI overview is incorrect. That's probably the average for all pro hockey players at all levels, not just the NHL.

The actual average NHL salary is $3,500,000 - https://sports.betmgm.com/en/blog/nhl/nhl-salaries-how-much-players-make-bm11/#:~:text=The average NHL salary is,for the 2023-24 season.

Maybe we get to see market value sooner than later

WNBPA executive director Terri Jackson said last July that the league is being undervalued in the deal, which was negotiated by the NBA, which owns about 60% of the WNBA.

"I think we're ready for a spin-off [from the NBA]," Kane told ESPN. "I just think that the NBA is incentivized to make decisions that are good for the NBA, and those are not always aligned with what's good for the WNBA. And so, for the sake of the league that I work in, I want women and women's basketball to be able to make clean, clear choices that are in their own best interest."

With respect to ratings and broadcasts I think college baseball is a good example. It’s not very popular ratings wise for reasons I can’t explain. I love it and ESPN+ is the best thing that’s ever happened for college baseball, softball too. I watch both way more than MLB and NBA. There’s room for all of it in the streaming environment.
