Off-Season Thread of Sadness: College Football’s Biggest Busts. Who Let You Down the Most?

Is this a clue that Andre Jones was actually innocent and a victim of mistaken identity ,as he always claimed?

"The Austin American-Statesman reported that police may have actually been seeking James Henry back in July when they arrested Andre Jones. When Robert Joseph was arrested, police said they were "police are still looking for a black man, described as 6-2 and weighing more than 220 pounds".[17] One week later they arrested Jones, who was 6-foot-5 and 295 pounds. The Austin American-Statesman reported "That discrepancy led to some questions about possible mistaken identity regarding Jones in the days after his arrest. Now it appears that police were looking for Henry, who was listed at 6-foot-2 and 200 pounds."[17] Henry had been questioned and released on the day of the robbery.[17]"

I played in an All-Star game with yall state title QB.

2005?  That kid didn't throw well and didn't run well, but he just never made mistakes and was tough as hell.  He broke a couple of ribs in the last game of the regular season and hid it till after state.

Yeah. He was a really good dude. We stayed connected and for about 3-4 years afterward.

Let's see what Robert Joseph is up to these days:

Groves driver pulled over, police find drugs, gun & 5-month-old child

Published 11:26 pm Friday, October 22, 2021  By PA News

A Groves man who police said had ecstasy, meth, more than $7,000 in cash and a gun while driving with an infant was indicted this week by a Jefferson County grand jury.

Robert Felix Joseph Jr., 34, was indicted for unlawful possession of firearm by a felon and as of Friday remained in the Jefferson County Correctional Facility on multiple charges.

According to a probable cause affidavit, on June 1, Groves police were dispatched to Beverly Place Apartments, 5307 Gulfway Drive for multiple calls of shots fired.

As they arrived in the area, they reportedly saw a vehicle leaving and the car’s front license plate improperly mounted on the front dash inside the vehicle.

This led officers to make a traffic stop, where they noted the driver, identified as Robert Felix Joseph Jr., had a marijuana joint behind his right ear and the vehicle smelled like marijuana.

Inside the rear of the vehicle in a car seat was a 5-month-old infant.  Police said the man was evasive in answering questions and refused to exit the car when told to so.

One of the officers assisted him out of the vehicle. They patted him down and handcuffed him due to his alleged erratic behavior.

Because the joint was reportedly found behind Joseph’s ear, officers had probable cause to search the vehicle. Inside the car was a 9mm handgun, which the man was prohibited to possess since he had previously been convicted of a felony.

A brown paper bag in the coin compartment held multiple pills identified as ecstasy and methamphetamine and there were multiple small empty clear plastic baggies in the car, the document read.

Joseph was arrested. As he was walking inside the jail, the officer looked down at the man’s shoes and reportedly saw his socks were bulging.  The bulge was, according to police, money.

One amount was folded and the other held together with a rubber band — all of which totaled $7,260.

According to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, Joseph was still in custody on Friday on a charge of felon in possession of a firearm with a $15,000 bond, abandon/endangering child with bond of $10,000, manufacture/delivery of a controlled substance warrant with a 50,000 bond and aggravated assault family violence with a $200,000 bond.

An indictment is not a final conviction of guilt; it is only a ruling by the grand jury that allows the district attorney’s office to proceed with a criminal case.

I'm genuinely surprised he is still alive. Doesn't sound like he's learned too much since his reign of terror at UT.

I wonder if there was a scene of Mack chewing the fuck out of the recruiting person who brought him in. Mack had to apologize in public on behalf of the football team, haha. I bet there was hell to pay for plenty of guys.

"I would like to apologize from our staff, players, and our coaches to the administration of The University of Texas, the athletic department, the student body, and our fans for the incidents that have happened this summer. It is something that we are not proud of, but I can promise you it is also not indicative of who this team really is. This team is as good a group of young men that we have ever coached, and they will continue to move forward after today and prove that on and off the field. At a time where we have had extra things happen outside of football that we are not proud of, I want to make sure that everyone understands that there are so many more young men on this team that will have the opportunity to show their class as well."

I think you’re combining a couple of recruits here. Alfio Randall was an OL from Yates that ended up at Blinn after signing with Texas and ended up coming to Texas. Paul Broussard was a DT from La Porte in the same class (1999) that signed with LSU, but ended up at Blinn. He transferred to Mississippi State, but was killed in a gas station parking lot in Mississippi on his way to move in.

And my nominee for biggest bust is Ben Gay. That guy was a monster in high school at Spring. Thought he and Odell James would both be really fucking good at Baylor, but I was wrong.

As for biggest Horns busts, Marcel Moses has to be #1 for me. He was a DT from Texas City that signed with Texas, and I’ll swear to the day I die that when we played them, he was the best player on the field as a sophomore on a defense that had seniors Jermaine Anderson, Ervis Hill, Tyrone Jones, and Everick Rawls. He went JUCO and never put it together and ended up at Midwestern State or some shit.  I was sure he was Warren Sapp’s long lost baby brother.

Poster in the Johntay thread was a victim of one of the robberies Joseph and Jones committed. He confirmed Jones himself pistol whipped his dog during the incident. Not a case of mistaken identity, just a piece of shit claiming to be innocent.

Yes, I saw that, which is pretty amazing, and one of the most incredible posts on Surly Horns, if true. I would like to believe it is true since it adds a level of context we rarely see, but sharing the alt info since it has become part of the narrative.

Henry was involved as well, believe he assaulted and tried to intimidate one of the witnesses. It sounds like there were multiple robberies committed, could be a case of Joseph/Jones committed one and Joseph/Henry committed another.

I think it was the same shoulder. He came in with length but not mass, but was good enough to get DE snaps as a true freshman (we know how much Mack loved redshirting people). If he had put on the muscle, he could have been very productive, but the shoulder gave out and football was done.

Pickryl and Williams were both pass rushing badasses.  Pickryl had 4.5 sacks and 8 TFLs as a part time player and true freshman.  He was going to be special.  Michael Williams was a Von Miller type pass rusher.  He was elite.  6 sacks as a part timer his sophomore year.

Despite my claims otherwise, I have to admit that this thread is a whole lot less sad now than it would have been three or four years ago.

This has ranged all over, from guys who did despicable stuff to guys who did stupid stuff and guys who just never lived up to the lofty expectations that come from being a Texas football player.

Wonder if the players ever get together in Jester now and say, "Damn that @TreatyOak. And man, that Hayduke. What an asshole."

On the other hand, there will always be that one-season stand we had together with Taylor. Scored 15 times, if I recall correctly. It was beautiful, especially the comeback against Oklahoma State, the crazy run out of the end zone in Columbus, and the touchdown against USC.

Edwin Simmons broke my heart.  His running stride made defenders look like they were standing still.  I still remember watching his TD kickoff return in person.  He looked like Darth Vader with his helmet on.  So much potential, sad knees.

Yeah I was sitting on the floor in Jester East playing Donovan Pitts some Atari and heard this voice like James Earl Jones and looked up and Edwin was towering over behind me. He was imposing as hell. I think he ended up selling cars somewhere…when he was wearing clothes.

Not a player, but to some degree, Tom Herman fits the description. If you recall,  it was an exciting time when he came. Most everyone, including myself, was excited about him and Surly Horns was just beginning. Surly Horns proved, by far, to be the better arrival, as Mensa revealed himself to be a petulant, immature and somewhat limited coach. Remember his very strange substitution policy, with WR’s switching out every play? Yes, he renovated the facilities and rallied the donors, but aside from the win over Georgia, was unable to take Texas to the next level. I’ll never forget him at his press conference following his last loss to Iowa State. He stood there, in a state of profound sorrow, understanding that he had blown his final opportunity. Worse, he was the OG Jimbo, as he walked away with a ridiculous payout.

Everyone has their opinion of the definition of a bust, but mine is a very highly ranked recruit who never did anything on the field. So for me that eliminates Simmons and Hadnot. When they were in the field they were every bit as good as our Heisman winners. Phil Brown was a good RB, but when Hadnot came in you just went Wow. Unfortunately they couldn't stay on the field for different reasons.

Simms was not a bust to me because he was a very good QB that had 1 really bad game. No one could've lived to to the hype, just like Quinn and maybe Arch. Gilbert was not a bust because he never had a chance to develop at Texas, but went on to be a difference maker at SMU and play in the NFL. That's not a bust. The same applies to Malcolm Brown. He may have played behind the worst OL in Texas history and averaged almost 5 ypc. He often was hit in the backfield and dragged 3 guys forward for a 3 yard carry. And he also went on the play in the NFL. That's also not a bust. J. Gray was though.

Alfio Randle is the model for a bust, but so were Edorian McCullough and Marco Martin. Two high 5* that came in with Mack's #1 class and never did anything. Martin was a DT that supposedly ran a 4.5 forty. McCullough was the fastest guy in the state and maybe the country.

Ash and Pickryl were also not busts to me because both showed promise, but had career ending injuries, just like Simmons. Also Gabriel Floyd.

You guys have shared a lot of great stories and names, but I want to see if anyone can top the Dre Jones story for sheer sadness. He was allegedly the first 5-star player to ever come out of El Paso and was ready to help the Longhorns reload for the 2007 season. By all reports, he was a top student in HS and the 3rd ranked DT in the country.

Somehow, impossibly, during fall camp, he is implicated in an apartment robbery along with the infamous Robert Joseph. According to the Statesman, "Jones and Joseph stole cash, cellphones and video game equipment from the residents, according to court documents." Although he always claimed he wasn't at the scene of the crime, (see the Johntay Cook thread for more on this) he was unable to clear his name, pleaded guilty, served 30 days, and never played a down for the University of Texas. This was the summer of 'Book 'Em Horns', with seven players getting arrested.

“There’s no doubt that he hooked up with the wrong crowd,” Payan said. “After (the arrest), he started to spiral out of control.”
Payan said Jones, who was no longer allowed to stay in the on-campus dormitory, had to “live out of his car. … It wasn’t a good situation for him.
Payan said he had very little contact with Jones after the player moved back to El Paso in the summer of 2008.
Jones, stripped of his athletic scholarship and possible bright future in college football, did not make a smooth transition back to his hometown.
“I always considered Andre mature for his age,” said Vanessa Burchett, who had known Jones since both were freshmen at Andress. “But I think being in Austin — a big city where he didn’t know anybody — he started hanging out with guys older than him. He wanted to be part of the crowd. In El Paso, he always stood out.”

He tried to play at UTEP, but was struck by a car and tore his knee ligaments. After a brief stint at Tarleton State, it was a steady downhill of drugs and depression. He was arrested for crack and cocaine possession in 2012.

“Andre would go on binges for months to smoke weed,” O’Neal said. “I’d ask him, ‘What are you doing? You don’t have the heart to take this.’ ” On Aug. 17, 2012, Jones was arrested; El Paso police said they found 34 grams of crack cocaine in small bags in a bedroom at his home. The case was dismissed last April.

Sepkowitz and Meitler ( his former coaches) said Jones, a regular at the Andress field house while in high school, never sought their guidance after he returned from Austin. Meitler said Jones might have been “too embarrassed” to approach them after losing his opportunity to play for the Longhorns.

In 2014, he died of an overdose at age 24.

Gzus.  I didn't remember that he died.  Oof.

Garrett Gilbert was a consensus 5 star recruit whose family demanded that he not have to compete with a 4 star or better ahead of or behind him in recruiting classes. He fucking sucked at Texas. Sucked out loud.

Then he left in ignominy to the hinterlands of college football to play for a pass happy June Jones. He put up enough stats for someone to take a flyer on him as a 3rd stringer in the NFL for a few years.

Be mealymouthed about the definition of a bust all you want, but however you wind up softly getting there, Garrett Gilbert can be labeled as such. The guy was a fucking bust at Texas. Claiming otherwise is fantasyland shit you should keep to yourself. What in the fuck is going on here?

Gilbert deserves special consideration because he set Texas back at the position for 3-4 years. Mack never should have caved to his demands and recruited other QB’s anyway. Not to mention the state was literally producing multiple Heisman Trophy winning players at the position while we wandered the desert.

I was in a meeting to plan through NIL development and growth after Sarkisian’s second season. I called Sarkisian “Seven Win Steve” and it was like a record screeching to a halt. Six faces just staring back at me. I’ve had it thrown back in my face by a few of them multiple times over the last two seasons. These folks apparently take their coaching access and relationships pretty, pretty seriously.

Here’s the amazing thing about Herman. He fucked  everything up.   Brought his own guys in, awful attitude, stubborn, possibly lazy, definitely a drink, a philanderer, etc.   yet you could’ve justified a return in year four as he should’ve been 9-3 and crushed Colorado in his last game.

That game against Iowa State his last season was one of the only times I've kind of quietly wanted Texas to lose.

I mean there were plenty of games under Charlie where I just didn't give a shit but nothing was saving his tenure.

Not a player, but to some degree, Tom Herman fits the description. If you recall,  it was an exciting time when he came. Most everyone, including myself, was excited about him and Surly Horns was just beginning.
