Your kids and weed

Long story but I found out my almost 17 year old kid has been partaking in the devil's lettuce. I went to her room to discuss something and the smell was strong. I got her to tearfully confess to having it in my house but she didn't smoke it here. In a somewhat funny twist, she stole it from her pothead mother (my ex) which made me laugh inside.

Now, I'm a 100% teetotaler. The strongest thing I imbibe is diet Dr. Pepper. But I don't think MJ is the bane of western civilization like many people do. I look at it the same way I look at alcohol, I don't give a fuck but I'm not interested. I don't want it in my house, though. I told her to put it back where she got it and to never bring it to my house again. Yes, I realize she probably won't do that. The kid is a good student, has a job, all that good stuff. I don't want to say the truth (which is I'm not too concerned about it) because I don't want to seem like I condone this behavior. I explicitly told her that I don't approve of it and that it's not acceptable. She agreed to not do it anymore. I don't believe her but what can I do? I can't control her mother, who told them a couple of years ago that she "won't stop smoking pot but would try to cut back).

As dumb as this may sound, I would've been more upset if she had been caught with a bottle of Evan Williams or Boone's Farm. Weed doesn't bother me as much as booze.

So, should I be terrified that she's opened a gateway to hard drugs, or write it off as teenage experimentation?

Weed is better than alcohol. But what are the odds that she just skipped over trying out alcohol?

To answer your question from a parental perspective, I've heard all should avoid drugs and alcohol until their brains are fully developed, ~21yrs female - 25yrs male.

Excellent point. I've had a similar conversation with my teenager and open honesty was what I put a big emphasis on. We also discussed drug abuse and I spent a lot of time talking about Manziel.

I agree with this concept but a minority of the population makes it through college without trying booze or weed.

I am confident my kids never tried it in High school.  Hell, i couldn't even get either one to have a beer with me at the house, all legal and shit.

Older one is almost 25 now.  He enjoys bourbons and beer with his old man now.  Younger one is 20 and I am still pretty sure he hasn't tried drugs or even alcohol.  That's a decision he has made, regardless of the law.

Myself?  I've never even possessed pot, much less smoked it.  It's just something I don't care for.  i do not smoke tobacco either.

I would vote to legalize pot in a heartbeat though.  let folks make that choice...to buy more JITB tacos.

I would have and have done with my kids the exact same as you did.  It cannot be in my house as long as it is illegal and you shouldn't do it.  The only thing that I have added to what you told her was that as tolerant as I am  if I find they have/had weed, it is the exact opposite is with other drugs.  I have a zero tolerance with pills, cocaine, opioids, etc.  They know that I will reign down holy hell if I even suspect they would think about touching it.

PS; How close to 18 is this daughter?

Anecdote, because thank god I don't have kids.  Friend's teenage kids liked weed.  Older girl does it occasionally but it was never a big thing.  Younger son is now obsessed with it.  Once he graduated from High School he got into trouble with a girl.  Finally ditched the girl and her craziness moving to the greater Bay Area because his uncle got him a job at Virgin Airlines.  He loves the job, ticket agent, been traveling for free all over and basically living the ultimate young twenties, now 24, single life.  Alaska Airlines has bought out Virgin and they drug test, unlike Virgin.  He's on the verge of quitting because he won't give up weed to keep his awesome job.

To the best of my knowledge, from his mom, he's never done anything harder because he loves weed.  But he's going through a bowl or two a day and about to give up a career with perks he loves because he can't or at least won't give it up.  See above about kids and drugs before physical maturity.

Weed likely not good for the developing brain. Alcohol as well.

Yea,  tell the kid to do the research.   It's not harmless, and there's a reason there are dumb asses waking around all over the place.   In the other hand I knew a guy who smoked almost every day during college,  and graduated with like a 3.8 in EE.

I discovered weed and glass pipe hidden inside the tower computer in my teen sons room years ago.  I sat him down with his best friend, gave them the talk about their developing brains, that K2 Spice synthetic THC, coke, heroin, pills were way more dangerous, but it was utimately their decision, not mine.  I couldn't stop them.

Gave him back his glass pipe and mexican dirt weed and told them both to act responsibly.  Bad parenting?  Probably.

I dont necessarily think weed shoukd be legal for recreational use but it absolutely should be legal in every state for medical use. It's insane how good it is at relieving certain pain and anxieties.

My wife had never tried it once in her life but she suffers from horrendous menstrual cramps two to three days a month that are so bad she cant sleep much. Doctors have given her all sorts of ibuprofen mixtures as well as different narcotics that are terrible for your body and they dont work very well except for maybe an hour or two.

Last month I said fuck it and we went to Colorado for a vacation to see if that would help her. Two hits off that dispensary weed and the pain was gone within minutes and lasted almost all through the night so she could sleep. It worked far far better than I imagined it would

Curious as to why you stop short on legalizing it altogether.

Illegal drugs in the home puts your home at risk. Learn about civil asset forfeiture. How would your daughter feel if her habit was responsible for you to be homeless?

You do this and she'll eventually become an amateur pornstar for us to view in U in her B.

I’m pretty biased because I went to a shitty high school. Knew of 1 current and 1 former (drop out) students killed in drug deals over marijuana during my time there. Both instances involved $50 or less worth of weed or cash. I read a lot of local news too, every other murder is a drug deal gone bad.

Do I think marijuana is dangerous? No.

Do I think that smoking/buying/selling it increases your chances of running across some shady, dangerous folks? Yes. There’s no way I’d let my kids do it as long as it’s illegal.

The same reason I dont think things like morphine or codine should be legal for recreational use but definitely have medicinal value. Weed may not be as physically addictive as thise substances but it is highly habit forming and can be used too much as a crutch by people that require mental health care.

I feel the same about psilocybin too. Definite medical benefits that need to be utilized but may not be responsible to have open for general sale to anyone.

So you're against legalization because some people might use it too much?

We’ll settle for a swimsuit photo. That’s a fair compromise.

I busted my son drinking and driving home from Applebee’s a few months ago. He lives in our TX house by himself where he knows that we are OK with drinking at the house but won’t buy it for him. The cardinal rule is that he NEVER drives nor does anyone else that partakes. Didn’t make a difference. Kids are going to be kids.

Good luck

This. Inform inform inform, and make sure the dialog is open. Explain the ramifications if she is caught by the law and the impact on future work and school. Don't scare, just inform. She'll do it regardless of what you say but better to be in the loop.

Just keep an eye on things.  Most people can smoke weed recreationally and still be engaged, functional members of society.  If it starts coming in the way of her pursuing opportunities, interests, etc, than I'd be more concerned and step in.

My BIL loves weed and has become the stereotype of a dysfunctional stoner (in his mid 20's, still living at home, struggles to holds jobs, has multiple marijuana related legal issues, and my in-laws justify everything he does thus sustaining the cycle).  If he was my son, I would be far more active in pushing him to turn his life around, but he's an adult whose made these choices.

My best friend and his wife both smoke a couple of times a week.  They have good jobs, a nice home in a growing area, and their kids are really well-adjusted nice, respectful kids.

No one responds to anything the same way, and people's abilities to handle things responsibly, and overall discipline levels can greatly vary.  You'll just have to pay attention to see which way your daughter is.

What a college experience. Happy hour at the local 'bee's.

That said, I once stole some weed from my parents stash they didn't think I knew about and smoked the whole pinner.

My stepdaughter smoked weed in our house for several years.  I never smelled it once.  It's not like I don't know the smell, but she was able to hide it until I saw discoloration on her white ceiling.  I basically said what most here have hinted at -- you're an adult at this point, you can do what you want, but I don't want illegal shit in my house.

My hypocritical soft spot is that I'd probably give our younger daughter (16) a beer if she asked for it.  She actually owned up to trying weed at a party without us asking, all as part of her telling us why she was disassociating from an old friend who has gone pretty far off into the party scene (mostly weed and molly).

There is no way to keep these things away from your kids.  An open line of communication is about the best one can hope for.

IMO weed isn't powerful enough to overcome good parenting, so make sure you are instilling worthwhile values and character that she can use when the tough decisions/situations come. Yeah it relaxes you and lowers your inhibitions a bit, but I've been around plenty of smokers, and weed doesn't make good people any less of good people, but it does put "adventurous" people in spots where that trait can get them in trouble.

If you live in Texas, it is not illegal for your kids to have a beer in your presence.

When CHIEF Jr. drinks (20 year old), there is no leaving our gated community. We have security only and LEOs can only enter if called by residents or management. He can drink, fishing at the river, playing golf, poker, or riding around on the golf cart. He has tried pot about 3-4 times, a couple of times here at the house, and a couple of times just riding around with friends on the golf cart. Telling them they cannot drink or smoke around you only means that they are going to go do it where you can't see or find out about it. Most of the time that is at a party that gets busted by the cops, then you got to go pick them up and hire an attorney to get charges reduced or dismissed. Luckily, CHIEF Jr. doesn't really like weed, but if he was hellbent on smoking it, I would rather it be where I can keep an eye on him.

Serious question: For those that have underage kids that partake while still living at home/with parents, do you subscribe to the theory of "You go out with the boys, you get up with the men?"  One of the more eye-opening (or at least one eye opening) experiences when I was young was having to drag ass out of bed at 6 a.m. on a Saturday whilst extremely hungover.  Can't even remember what it was for, probably something simple like yard work.  But the suck factor of the hangover was high enough that I really learned the value of moderation.
