This one has always stuck with me...   " I hope to be the person my dog thinks I am. "

So long, Buddy.  May there always be game for you to chase and a hole to dig.

I've only had one dog in my life.  I had never heard about the Rainbow Bridge poem before I had to let my Chela go. Someone shared it with me, and It still brings me peace 10 years later.

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

All our dogs will be there to greet us when our time comes.  I take comfort in that.  Sorry you went thru that but dogs endure, and he loved you to his final moment.  He’s in your heart living only his best days.

Sorry for your loss, JGray. When my dog died about a year ago, it was one of the saddest moments of my life (which I realize is just an insane thing to be true, but it is). As many will say, remember the great times and be glad you got such a long ride!

I’m kinda torn. When my pups pass, I also don’t want them to stay dogs that have to serve me forever. I’d like to think they somehow graduate to a higher life form and get released so we can have a toast somewhere. But then I’d also always miss them when they went their way. Or maybe they just go where you believe and that’s all that matters.

To  all those that have gone before, and to all those loyal waggers to the end, we forever solute you, for all the treasures you brought daily. You galant knights of the realm, go peacefully to chase whatever fancies you now have with the sky as your limit.

Just read all replies....Thanks so much everyone. I just recently read about the Rainbow bridge also.  There will never be another Buddy for me.  16 years!  He certainly outlived all his peers.

If I ever give up on humanity we may just buy a tract of land and adopt the dogs people gave up on. Dogs are awesome, if I ever was able to believe in God again it will be a dog that leads me there.
