Trump reminds me of an amatuer bad painter who, when making an error, trying to fix it actually makes it worse and so he has completely lost the painting and it's ruined but he needs to fix it and with every brushstroke it gets worse and he just won't put the brush down because of ego and fear and chaos.

Fuck me.  Gatorbet beat me to it.

I mean....read this idiocy: https://www.yahoo.com/news/dont-panic-over-stock-market-080358444.html

TLDR version: Trump is making us great, because tariffs mean that we'll just start manufacturing everything over here, bringing back all them manufacturing jobs.  And gosh, didn't you forget Biden, whose polices caused all that inflation (note that they never tell you what policies, exactly, those were.  Nor do they observe the glaring facts that 1) inflation was GLOBAL (meaning....not just here in the US), and 2) the US had a LOWER inflation rate than most every other western economy.  That is, when graded on the curve, the US performed WELL on inflation).

That's it, folks.  We're going to bring back all kinds of manufacturing jobs.  They'll be here in a coupla months!  How?  Well....we're going to magically build thousands of giant factories, requiring trillions of dollars in investment betting on it always being the best, most cost-effective way to do things!  Yep, investors will be lining up to put their dollars into a new plastic injection molding plant to make all those toy soldiers the Chinese done stole from us, etc. etc. etc.  And they'll do so posthaste -- those factories will be up and running before the year is out!

Dumbest.  Fucking.  Timeline.

Hey Boomer, the factories are already being built.

Think about the long game for a second. TSMC makes 60% of the chips for the world.

When China overtly moves on Taiwan they go scorched Earth and there's no more chips for anybody.

No more phones, no more computers, no more cars, no more medical equipment, no more power grid equipment, no more autonomous farm equipment, no more home appliances...

Unless the DoD... oops I mean Samsung, is building a place to make chips into the future in Taylor, TX....

Those fabs are gonna lose a ton of the reasons that brought them to America if/when the CHIPS act is killed by Herr Trump

lol

The one in Taylor is finishing up and there's 10 more years already scheduled to be built there.

Keep being a defeatist boomer.

It's actually not a Trump or Biden thing, although the midwits will want to praise and blame one side or the other. It's a military funded installation that took years of planning and building and will keep going on for years and years.

Samsung's fab is not going to finish, with the CHIPS act enforcement dismantled they have all the incentive in the world to just pocket the money and not build a thing.

I think Trump will lose the "Blue Wall turned Red Wall" bloc with the economy. The 40% who love him will love him no matter what. The 40% who hate him will hate him no matter what. The people who decide elections are already jumping off the bandwagon and anymore damage to our 401k's, businesses, IRA's, play money stock portfolios, etc. is just gonna turn folks against him even more.
That said, he's termed out and in his 80's-- what does he care about needing votes or approvals? He got the last votes he needed and he and his con-artist future biographer can write a vanity piece book as his "legacy" and I'm sure Simon Schuster will publish it because there is money to be made.

Americans won’t remember anything come next election cycle except what their tv tells them. Like little kids going to school and getting sex change operations without their parent’s knowledge.

Well I did a little work on it, and you can ignore it's existence or say it's going to be a ghost town I guess.

When I say 10 more years I mean they are building another entire section similar to the first.

There's a whole city of contractors working out there right now. I figured you guys would be dancing around celebrating Joe Biden's (or whoever was actually running the country) success with this one. They got a little juice from the chips act.

The CHIPS act is over, everyone that dealt with enforcement was fired, they will pocket all the tax payer money they can and never build a real fab, it is so blatantly obvious, it is ridiculous how anybody could fall for banana republic import substitution.

I am a proponent of import substitution, but done right, done correctly, this is not what this is, it is a clown show that will just waste money and give Trump propaganda with voters. It is funny how the invisible hand, comparative advantage, washington consensus and/or laissez faire is dead and buried, everyone is now fully on board with the shit I was a proponent off decades ago. The US could have had a soft economic landing instead we are headed for an economic collapse with stupid tariffs based on the whims of a petty man.

Samsung broke ground in Taylor in 2022.

TSMC broke ground in 2021.

This might have helped that happen: “It was this financial fallout that led to the creation of the Creating Helpful Incentives to Produce Semiconductors and Science Act (otherwise known as the CHIPS Act). Signed into law on August 9, 2022, the CHIPS and Science Act directs nearly $53 billion to “American semiconductor research” (source is one of your links.)

Tariffs had nothing to do with that. Neither did turnip.

TSMC might well have an independent incentive to build fabs here in the event of a Chinese invasion or other aggression.

Samsung probably doesn't.  And there are a lot of domestic HQd SC manufacturers incentivized by CHIPs to keep fabs domestic and invest domestically (Micron, Intel, etc.).

People already got paid Zeus. It's in their best interest to walk away from it the minute they are told they can and they will.

But you guys that think manufacturing is coming back in droves make me giggle. Even if you could bring manufacturing back, you cannot simply flip a light switch and bring back manufacturing without heavy investment in infrastructure. Let me explain. I was born in Akron Ohio the tire cap of the world. That's where Goodrich, Goodyear, Firestone, General, and Mohawk came from. They started closing those factories shortly after I was born, and by the late 80's nothing was left. It had all been outsourced. Not only would you have to build back all those manufacturing plants that were torn down, you would also have to get workers to move to Akron, which has shrunk in size due to lack of opportunity. That means investment in housing and development of shopping centers too. Imagine doing that in West Virginia, Penn, Upstate NY, and anywhere all these old manufacturing centers used to be located that have since turned to ghost towns. Now imagine doing all that just to gain less profit than what you did when your manufacturing was overseas because you have to pay American workers so much money, so much for the land the company is on, and so much in taxes. Without subsidies no company is going to do that and the American people aren't going to pay those prices.

I wonder how many of those old manufacturing sites have residual enviromental concerns that would make it unwise to rebuild pretty much anything on those sites without adequate cleanup or containment.  Trump killing off the EPA also kills off any Superfund monies going to those projects, and likewise probably kills any regulations about land use without said reclamation measures.    Just more food for thought when it comes to re-establishing manufacturing here in the US.

They don’t care and would raze and rebuild without consideration.  It’s the pre- upton Sinclair era again.

You would also need the power infrastructure to power those factories. Our power grid is being used for bitcoin mining and AI, not bringing manufacturing back to the US.

To add to this, only 1 Republican in the House and 15 in the Senate voted for the CHIPS Act. 205 Republicans in the House and 32 in the Senate voted against it.  To try to give Trump or his party credit for anything that has been funded by the CHIPS Act is the height of idiocy, so of course Zeus is doing it.

i’m in the process of putting together the greenhouse I purchased.  Yeah, turns out as it is a cluster fuck with poor instructions from China.

I figured the way things are going. I might as well plant something to eat - - and something to smoke. We’ll see how all that goes.

Is it one of the cheap aluminum frame ones with corrugated plastic panels?  I’ve built one at each of our previous two houses. Second one went up much easier. As long as none of the aluminum gets bent in shipping, and you have a nice level surface, AND you get the base anchored square, they go together pretty well. Fucking geometry.

Aw nah, maybe I should call it a green hut.   Mine’s not that big, like 12’ long. Truthfully, I should’ve bought one bigger, but I’ve never been much of a gardener and I wanted to dip my toe first.   Just gonna grow some baby carrots and small potatoes and squash and tomatoes - and some lettuce.

And one pot plant.

Yup. One of the aluminum pieces did get bent in shipping, but the magic of a blow torch and vice grip got it serviceable.    The fact that you decided to build a second one gives me some hope. lol
