I'll never get over his reelection. It's just so fucking incomprehensibly stupid.

Don't know about that. seems like a pretty successful conman.

Well I was thinking he was a failed conman (Trump steaks, Trump U, all of those grifts) until this dumbass country elected him. But upon further review, I guess that wouldn't have happened if he hadn't conned pop culture into believing he was some master negotiator and businessman as seen on "reality" TV.

On the plus side, some regarded asshole gets to call people regarded again at work.

The fact that all of this actually horrible shit is happening in large part because people just couldn't take hearing about the preferred pronouns of a tiny population of people for one more goddamn second is actually kind of hilarious if you disocciate enough.

Just noting the dollar continuing its free-fall.  It's now up to $1.33 to buy a GBP.

Yes, for a dumbass like me that considered moving enough money for a home purchase to my account in Portugal in January when the Euro was $1.03 but wasn't quite ready, I'm reaaaaally enjoying seeing it close today at $1.14. I guess we're collateral damage at the leopard feast, but I can live with that as long as they keep feasting on all the deserving juicy faces they need to get through.

I get to have a sit-down with my parents Friday a week after my sister did the same thing with them. Apparently, and unsurprisingly, my mother's #1 priority was immigration. Why a 67 year-old retired woman who lives in Sun City is concerned with immigration above all else, I just don't know. Well, other than the racism.

And guess which "informed voter" was completely unaware of Trump sabotaging Biden's border bill?

The ECB is expected to cut interest rates for the 7th time, and yet, “Too Late” Jerome Powell of the Fed, who is always TOO LATE AND WRONG, yesterday issued a report which was another, and typical, complete “mess!” Oil prices are down, groceries (even eggs!) are down, and the USA is getting RICH ON TARIFFS. Too Late should have lowered Interest Rates, like the ECB, long ago, but he should certainly lower them now. Powell’s termination cannot come fast enough!

It really seems like these big dollar donors to Trump from the energy sector would have already explained to him the issue when oil prices get too low. Then again, this is Trump. His 3rd grade understanding of international markets and economies probably wouldn't allow that to sink in.

If the economy is booming and everything is going great...why should the Fed cut interest rates? Isn't that the opposite of what it should do?

And I have never heard of tariffs as a way for a country to enrich itself but I learn more fascinating economics every day.

in graphs it is helpful to read the context clues.

What context is available to tell me whether there are 1 million or 10 million people or 100 million people from which the 150k delta is derived?

The travel drop off is a pretty clear warning sign.  We’re fucked.

I'll take your travel drop off, and raise you tumbleweeds blowing through California ports. China is drinking our milkshake.

Don't worry though, we have identified the problem:

Presumably this drop is entirely due to Trump's public statements of wanting to dictate Fed actions including firing his appointee, Powell. The relative day-to-day independence of the Fed has long been viewed as a stabilizing force. Obviously President have influence via Fed appointments but since their term is 14 years, one President cannot fully appoint the board.

By all accounts, Trump is afraid to fire anyone in person or on the phone. He didn't mind firing Bret Michaels in the Apprentice boardroom but cannot do the same for an actual professional. Not that he's believed to be able to fire Powell, he obviously has the ability to ask for his resignation. Or anyone's. But he's too much of a coward to ask Powell directly.

Probably, but these market participants are addicted to interest rate declines. If he were to fire Powell, I think we see a decline followed by another record day. I don’t think hedge funds, banks and other major participants really care about rule of law over profits. If you look at profits of major banks last week, they are now extremely reliant on trading revenue. I think they would ultimately cheer the firing of Powell. And that is the most damning thing I could say about this group.

Do you think they would cheer for inflationary monetary policy given the state of play wrt tariffs and the current CPI numbers/projections?

Maybe but I think the overall market would flip out if Trump started controlling the Fed. It's not like Trump would appoint an industry respected candidate. He would appoint someone with two qualifications: loyalty to Trump and willing to do whatever Trump wants. And it wouldn't stop with Powell. Trump would start to go after each Fed board member who pushed back.

Can you imagine a Fed Chair whose main message would be praising Trump?

I think they would say they would be cheering  for deregulation, “tax reform” and whatever else phrase they want to use for an upward market. Trump is ultimately doing what they want. The end results don’t matter.

Slightly disagree--I think they see an organized financial sector and predictable regulatory regime as a function toward profit taking, but elites in all high level decision making capacities appear to believe this chaos falls into the "business as usual" bucket and that institutional inertia will temper the executive's ambitions.

They will also gladly kiss the ring because finance runs on greed.

Yea, I can imagine it since we are seeing it in every other once respected institution.

So how long before Trump provides another head fake toward lifting the tariffs only to tank the market again in a few more weeks?

China and it’s very subtle “if you do what Trump wants and it hurts China, we are going after your ass” comment might be adding to the JPow threat concern in the market.

I have no idea how to parse all of this out.

I mean, yeah - if you have to pick between the unscrupulous trading partner that has cheated around the edges and the one that recently pulled out a knife and stabbed you square in the back, I'm thinking I'm going with the former.  That shit ain't good for the US - which is exactly why you don't declare a trade war on the entire globe at the same time.

So.  Much.  This.

We can have much debate about whether the strategy vis-a-vis China is the right one, but most folks would agree that China is a trade adversary that requires additional management.

But to kick off a fight with them....while telling literally every single one of your allies (and your enemies....fucking EVERYONE) "fuck off, you're my enemy too!" is the dumbest fucking shit imaginable.  Like, "invading Russia before locking down western Europe, the UK, and the US by Hitler" dumb.

And also....a fucking immediate-term firebombing strategy to resolve issues that took decades to build up, and will take lots of time to disentangle?  Yeah, that's fucking dumb too. But it's extra-mega-super-dumb when you decide to stand alone and make yourself the enemy of literally the entire fucking world.
