It's as close to an actual quote as there is....China is not fucking around and they are dog walking Donald thus far

The issue is that Trump and his regime treat all foreign countries with complete contempt and disrespect. The Chinese will not put up with being disrespected, especially not from a Western county. Dude is bringing up a hundred years of Chinese rage over how they were treated by the Western Powers.

Art of the Deal I guess. Do everything to make it personal with your negotiating partner, so they make it their prime focus to take you down.

Trump treats countries like a 6-times bankrupt real estate developer treats contractors. Whoops.

FIF accuracy.  Because I know of a full spectrum of developer types.  The ones that have been around forever, who thrive when times are good, and manage to survive when times are bad (because dudes, that market be cyclical) generally treat their contractors alright.  Because maybe on THIS deal, the project ended up being one where the contractor took it in the shorts.....which is okay, and he won't end up in litigation or a major dispute with the developer, because he knows that on the next deal, he'll be treated fairly, and will have a chance to make a decent profit.  Repeat dealings mean stability, reliability, and risk avoidance.

There are shitty developers who are combative with everyone, and try to fuck over everyone.  Those developers don't seem to last very long.

So.  Much.  This.

We can have much debate about whether the strategy vis-a-vis China is the right one, but most folks would agree that China is a trade adversary that requires additional management.

But to kick off a fight with them....while telling literally every single one of your allies (and your enemies....fucking EVERYONE) "fuck off, you're my enemy too!" is the dumbest fucking shit imaginable.  Like, "invading Russia before locking down western Europe, the UK, and the US by Hitler" dumb.

And also....a fucking immediate-term firebombing strategy to resolve issues that took decades to build up, and will take lots of time to disentangle?  Yeah, that's fucking dumb too. But it's extra-mega-super-dumb when you decide to stand alone and make yourself the enemy of literally the entire fucking world.

I had this argument yesterday and my buddy was like well if China’s economy is in trouble also and I was like yeah maybe so but China don’t give a fuck. They literally welded apartment doors shut during Covid. Their leadership will make them enjoy pain that our soft asses can’t.

This.  Never get involved in a "to the pain!" dispute with an opponent who has this guy's pain tolerance:

And no worries....if it gets too painful for them and there's some unrest, they can run the one-two punch of 1) Tiananmen square their asses, and 2) start a distracting war with a neighbor, maybe Taiwan.

Apparently, they are hung up on the request that the Prime Minister’s deputy dress in a Sailor Moon costume.  Also, Trump insists on them serving well done Wagyu steaks at negotiation dinners, but the Japanese chefs are balking.

1) the Japanese have NO credibility pushing back on anyone's kink

2) yeah, overcooking steaks should be deemed an act of war, so there's that.

THIS.

I grew up in a family where the head of the house cooked the steaks well done. I was not a rebellious teen by any stretch of the imagination but damn if I didn't stage a meat coup over insisting that steak should never be cooked that long.

Trying to absolve themselves of responsibility. Only morons didn't see this coming so they're either stupid or just assholes who thought they would escape unharmed. Or both.

Yep. Translation: I thought he’d engage in targeted insane fuckery against people OTHER than me and my interests, and I was super-ok with that. Which means you’re a shitty person.

I just can't believe kamala is just sitting back and not saying anything. She absolutely should be dunking on everyone and calling everyone stupid.

Yeah idk that's a bunch of nonsense. No way would it be bad if kamala was out here calling him a fucking retard and getting more press than the actual clown show.

I dunno, seems like the one thing Trump has always done well is getting people to play his game, and then beating the fuck out of them at it.

Rope a dope is a strategy. Not sure if it wins here because choosing the moment when and with whom to attack is kind of important.

The one thing I am pretty sure of is that Kamala isn't the "who".

Yup.  Someday she might be a Cabinet level appointee or governor of CA but Pres or VP are out.

Unfortunately it was proven no one gives a fuck what she thinks. It needs to come from someone else.

As posted on one of the other tariff threads, the irony of being accused of inconsistency by an Asian counter-party is thick.

Although, to be fair, Japan apparently has more "westernized" its approach to contracts and negotiations than, say, China.

new tariff on solar panels from certain Asian countries:  3,521%.

Oddly specific.

Quote

Products from Cambodia would face duties of more than 3,500% because its producers elected not to cooperate with the US probe.

This is the result of a specific case, about a specific product, which was specifically found to be subject of unfair subsidies and then being priced below their cost of production (dumping).  In other words....THAT is the kind of situation that specific, targeted tariffs are SUPPOSED TO BE USED FOR.  The problem is that this admin has taken such an idiotic blanket approach to tariffs on....everything....against....everyone....that it's functionally impossible to separate the wheat from the chaff....and the shit....and garbage....and shards of glass.

Tariffs are a tool.  They can be useful in certain specific situations.  Running around and whacking everyone you see on the head with a hammer is not a good way to convince people that a hammer can be a useful tool when it comes time to drive a nail into a board.

Yeah, things could've gone Trump's way but they had to do the one thing the Chinese will not tolerate and that's being treated like second class humans. Those are some old wounds for them and Vance calling them peasants just drove the stake home. It's like they learned nothing from the Canada debacle.

So how long before Trump provides another head fake toward lifting the tariffs only to tank the market again in a few more weeks?

Checking back in ...

And the market jumps 2.5% ...

And futures jump another 1.5% this evening.

Any guess what happens next?  Good luck, markets ...

I think coffee supply has recently been impacted by weather in some of the top producing countries, as well. The price for ours went up a couple months ago.

I love drinking coffee. Not a coffee snob other than I stay away from coffee that has a definitively bitter and acidic taste. A couple of the brands here have a smooth flavor and the price has not gone through the roof yet. Sometimes I’ll buy Kcup pods that are on sale. One of the good things about working in a restaurant is access to free coffee, especially if the brand they use tastes good.
