Not to be @Thatguy, but be very, very careful with anyone online soliciting money. There are a ton of online donation scams out there.

If you don't like that advice, @gofuckyourself

It's on his IG. That's the best I can do on vetting it. I'm not fond of posting GoFundMe links. I don't know how to make more certain that it's legit.

Edit: if someone has a way to contact him directly that would be great

Idk but he made 18 million in his career, needing 50k seems a bit odd.  Didn’t seem like a blow all his money guy.

I think it's only available for 5 years after retirement for vested players, which Melton was. Vesting takes 3 years and he played 6, but he does get a pension as well as his earnings.

Not to mention the passive-aggressive tone of the original Facebook post is kinda weird.

Wow, just read it. The last paragraph is weird, for sure. Not a great way to inspire people to donate.

Man I totally forgot he had a little NFL career at DT.

You would think he would have some money left.

The speed option left toss with a freshman Melton against tOSU on 4th down seemed high risk...still think he crossed the plane...but didn't matter...but what wild call given the situation.

Gave him a jello shot one time when he came over to the house in college, so doesnt hit that close to home?

I had shots with him while he was in high school at my friends house and played whirley ball with him in Dallas while he was at UT...and I'm 60 years old LOL!

I didn’t know that until earlier this week. Warren Sapp was talking about something it in a video I was watching. Said you are eligible for the HOF after 5 years and you lose your insurance at the same time.

Sorry, T. Boone Pickens was still alive then.

No touchdown.

Pension doesn't kick in until age 55, and then it's like $40k per year.

Pension can be taken at the earliest at age 55 and is dependent upon earnings.  I worked with a former NFL player who if he took the pension at 55 it would have been about $77k/year.  If he waited until 65, it would have been around $250k/year.

Fair enough.  It just seems like the original comment implied that he's currently getting a pension so he should be able to afford his healthcare.  That isn't the case.

so he made almost $20MM and can’t hop on the marketplace and get insurance?  I wish him all the best but it’s confusing to me.  a guy who got into collisions for a living doesn’t take the time to get health insurance after making millions and millions of dollars.

So, breakeven (ignoring time value) at age 68-69.  Depending on position played, I might be inclined to take the early pension (cough CTE cough).

Diplomatically, of course, because of a shorter life-span, we agreed on taking at around 60 years of age (because he could get from 55 to 60 financially).

Yeah, there are better causes out there for my charitable contributions than football players who blew through $20M in earnings (say $10M Net) and are still in their 30's. I think gofundme as a whole is a fucking plague on society. So many scams and people that launch campaigns regardless if they actually need the money or not (and I obviously have no idea if HM needs it or not).

Can't imagine how he did that. Maybe they should unpin those travel pics on the Instagram page where they're asking for our money.

About a decade ago a neighbor was suffering from a very rare form of cancer, to the point that experimental treatment was the best path forward.

I don't remember if GoFundMe was a thing back then, but there was an effort spearheaded by family friends to cover the expensive treatment that wasn't covered by insurance, travel to/from a different city, hotel costs, etc.  I live in a nice neighborhood, but the estimated $100k is a big bogey for most people.  I didn't feel bad giving $1k towards the effort.

Then 2 weeks later landscape guys show up with about dozen trees and shrubs to improve the landscaping in the front yard, and a new $50k+ SUV appears in the driveway.

So, yes, I agree just because a GoFundMe was a started, you have no idea if they actually need it.

I am a close friend of Henry's and hopefully I can clear up some of the misconceptions. First off, this isn't any type of GoFundMe scam.

Henry does have health insurance, but his insurance isn't great. It's not employer provided, he's paying out of pocket and having been a relatively healthy guy, he didn't opt to get the best insurance possible.

Even with insurance, this was a major event and his bills are astronomical. I can't say I know every single detail, but I believe he had to be airlifted via helicopter to a trauma hospital in downtown Chicago amongst several other complications that required extra care. I don't exactly know how all of that factors into what is covered by his insurance and what isn't at this point, but he spent 3 weeks in ICU and I don't believe the whole thing simply comes down to meeting a deductible and then everything else being covered.

Right now, he's unable to walk and will require on-going physical therapy. This will be a lifelong condition he is facing.

He certainly isn't broke but having made $18m in career earnings, you can quickly deduct that down to less than half ($9m after taxes, agent fees, league fees, union fees, etc are taken out). And then factor he hasn't even been in the league for almost 10 years now. He lives a bit better than your 6-figure tech bro, but anyone would be set back by this major life threatening and long term medical setback. He has a very long journey ahead.

Also note that Henry did not ask for the GoFundMe to be setup. A friend of his made it on his behalf and is making sure he receives all the money, but it's not in Henry's character to ask for money. Having said that, it's a pleasant surprise as he will certainly need the money over time. If it's not for your taste or how you want to spend your money, all good! If you care to donate, it is definitely appreciated by him.

Hopefully this puts some of the shit slinging and speculation to rest.

The tip of the football would have needed to be somewhere inside of his stomach, or behind him, in order for that to not be a TD.

Do you need him to look as bad as possible for people to give him money?

I'm glad that the surgery went well and he can smile with his daughter. I don't have any money for him but I'm not rooting against him or anything - seems like a good enough dude.

Well, folks, the anonymous poster with three posts who joined one hour ago has confirmed that this is indeed a legitimate and trusted GoFundMe endeavor, so go at it!

In other news you can trust, FyreFest 2.0 has been announced for Isla De Mujeres starting May 30. Ticket packages are on sale for $1,500, $5,000, $25,000 and $1.1M.

No acts have been signed yet. Buying mine today!

I mean you can literally go to his Instagram and he has the GoFundMe link in his bio.

Do you think he’s trying to scam people via GoFundMe by undergoing an open heart surgery? Make it make sense.

Your comment was that he looked great for someone who just underwent a major heart surgery with 50% mortality rate.

I was just curious if you needed to see him at his worst, or if your justification for not giving money was that “he looks fine”.

It’s your money and you can choose to give or not give. It’s not like someone is holding a gun to your head. I don’t understand the anger of some people. If it’s not for you, just ignore it.
