Moving OT back to 15 minutes & more virtual measuring are good starts.

The NFL is considering changing overtime rules in the regular season to decrease the advantage for teams that win the coin toss.

"It's time to rethink the overtime rule," league executive Troy Vincent said Wednesday at the NFL scouting combine.

Vincent said the competition committee agrees overtime rules need to be addressed. Receiving the ball first has become more of an advantage than pre-2011 when overtime was a sudden-death period. Receiving teams won 56.8% of games in overtime from 2017 to 2024, up from 55.4% from 2001 to 2011.

Current rules give both teams an opportunity to possess the ball in overtime unless a touchdown is scored on the first possession.

The rules are different in the playoffs. Both teams get a chance to have a possession even if the offense scores a touchdown on the opening drive. That postseason change came after the Buffalo Bills lost to the Kansas City Chiefs in a divisional round game in January 2022.

Making the overtime rules the same in the regular season is a possible solution, along with extending the period to 15 minutes.

Among other changes, the NFL plans to use its virtual measuring system to determine first downs in 2025. This wouldn't eliminate the officials who manually spot the ball and use chains to mark the line to gain. The optimal tracking system notifies officiating instantly if a first down was gained after the ball is spotted by hand.

"We used this in the background last season," said Kimberly Fields, the NFL's senior vice president of football operations. "The goal for 2025 is to continue to train our techs, who are the ones who will be utilizing the technology, finalizing all of our officiating processes and procedures around virtual measurements and testing the graphics for the broadcast and in-stadium, so fans in the stadium and fans watching on television can see what we're doing. The chain crew will still be there as backup."

New York Jets owner Woody Johnson, heavily criticized by fans and media for a bitterly disappointing 2024 season, took another big hit Wednesday.

This time, it came from his own players.

The NFL Players Association released its annual team report cards, a survey of 1,695 players who graded their respective teams in various categories. Jets players sent a loud message to Johnson, giving ownership an F -- the only team in the league to do so.

The Jets' overall ranking, based on grades in 11 categories, was 29th -- a drop from 21st in 2023.

Regarding Johnson, the NFLPA said the players "cite perceived top leadership issues, with some describing issues as 'top-down problems.'" It notes how the Jets' ownership grade dropped from B- to F, with Johnson receiving the lowest score for contributing to a positive team culture.

Good luck and Hoping for fair seas, great fishing,  and more family time.

When it came up in my FB feed, I thought the worst.  I was grateful it was just a retirement annoumncement.

The Super Bowl champion Eagles are releasing six-time Pro Bowl cornerback Darius Slay, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter on Monday.

Slay's release will be designated as a post-June 1 transaction, saving the Eagles $4.3 million against the salary cap.

The Eagles currently have a little over $20 million in cap space. Several key players are set to hit free agency next week, including linebacker Zack Baun, defensive linemen Josh Sweat and Milton Williams and guard Mekhi Becton.

Deebo to Commanders for a 5th.

5th sounds cheap but skins are taking on his $24 mil cap hit.  That was more important to Niners. Big $ for an oft injured high mileage receiver.

I'm getting this inkling that the Raiders might pull off a big trade for DK, give him a nice contract extension, and sign Darnold to start at qb. Pete ain't got no time to mess around.

Was he the last SD charger left on the roster?

He'll be the oldest coach in NFL history week 1, so I don't think anyone is looking at a 10 year arc for this thing.

He might be, that seems quite possible but, I just looked at the roster and they have some guys who have been in the league close to as many, and more seasons than has Bosa. It’s just where they played during those seasons. Not certain about it.

Bengals allowing Trey Hendrickson to seek a trade.

Strange move. The Bengals defense is already pretty bad so let’s trade their best defensive player.

Jags trade Christian Kirk to Texans for a 7th rounder next year.

Not sure I see the point in trading for him. He's making 16.2m this year, which seems like a bit much for him. He's a good Tank Dell replacement as a slot guy, but I'm not sure I would want to spend that much cap space on him. Maybe they can rework that deal and extend him for less AAV to make it worthwhile. He's only 28, and a broken collar bone isn't a big deal, he should be good to go for camp this year.

I’d be surprised if that extension hasn’t already been worked out.

Geno Smith to the Raiders for a 3rd round pick just came down the pipeline. He will be their guy. Him and Darnold are one in the same.

This is a great move.  Workable pro QB for 1-3 years while they rebuild in other domains and dive into the 2026 or 2027 draft class.

Replying to the same message 2x, thinking from a Cowboys perspective.

Basically, Smith gets you 0.8-0.9x of Dak for 0.33x the compensation.  The $40mm delta is non-trivial and can help you rebuild the franchise.  I am not a Dak hater, but I do believe he is a $35mm-40mm Qb, not a $60mm qb.

It’s almost like these dipshits did not watch what Brady/Bill/massage-man did in NE…

The good thing for Bosa is he's only played about three seasons, so theoretically he has a lot more in him, if he ever wants to try to be healthy for a season.

As a Raiders fan I’m pretty stoked. As others said he’s perfect for the next few years while we right the ship. Him and Carrol back together will hopefully get us to the playoffs and back in the conversation.
