I would like to believe I have quite a few people in my life who would show up at my door if I didn't answer calls/texts for more than about 48 hours. Especially at that age.

Edit: Meaning more her than him. But yeah if you have a 95 year old parent, may want to check in every few weeks or so.

The USA Today article was a tough read. Sounds like Gene was alive for a week after his wife died of hantavirus. The dog starved inside of the crate. For everybody that says they never want to be in a retirement home, this is the other side of the coin.

Hantavirus is no joke. We should all get our houses checked for rodents.

It's hard to imagine 3 middle aged kids not checking in on their 95 year old dad with Alzheimer's for over a week.  What a sad story.

One of them said she hadn’t talked to him in a couple of months.

I just can't even imagine that, but I was very close with my parents, and they were sharp as tacks up until death.  An Alzheimer's patient?  I'd be calling every day.

I'm guessing she was sick but unaware of how sick. She was his caregiver. She probably collapses in the bathroom and can't get up. He's too far gone with Alzheimers to respond if she tried calling for help. Dog is locked up. She can't get her phone, and dies on the bathroom floor.

Meanwhile, he's wandering around the house unaware she's even missing. Doesn't know to feed himself. Probably isn't taking his heart medication that she made sure he took. He gets weak from no food and falls. Pacemaker is keeping him alive for a while but he finally dies, completely unaware of what is happening.

Dog dies of dehydration or starves in the crate.

Sad all around. This is probably a case where his fame worked against him. A normal person would probably have a nurse coming to check regularly. They didn't want his condition going public so they kept it too compartmentalized.

If he was so far gone that he didn't know to feed himself, much less know to pick up a phone and call 911, I'm not sure how his family still had him in that situation.

His caretaker croaked so the situation was fluid.

That's why they need daily visits of home care and health care.  Somewhat surprising that Hackman did not need to see at least a nurse every few days.
