It's not that simple. Spending creates growth and builds wealth for all of society. Materialism is indeed not good, and a particular bugaboo of mine. And we definitely don't save enough. But over saving creates issues of stagnation as well where the money isn't being utilized. It's a balance. Personally, I think the correct way is to spend money on fewer, substantially higher quality items. The fact WalMart exists is a monument to our terribleness.

Agreed 100% on spending money on high quality items. I try and buy things that will last rather than something that will save me a few bucks now, but need to be replaced in a few years. Unfortunately, many products seem to be designed to fail these days.
