We've seen them on and off in the house every spring for a decade plus.  Never more than a dozen in a week.  Then today one of my kids sent me this photo from his bathroom window.  They were on the inside of the window screen and he shut the window on them.  (Yes I know I need a new window.)

Suddenly I remember one of the bedrooms next to that bathroom (they're upstairs) has over time developed an inch plus of break on the floor in the corner closest to the bathroom.

My mind is running wild- what if carpenter ants have burrowed tunnels for the past 15 years in the joists causing them to be spongy and that's responsible for the subfloor sagging? Is it going to collapse bringing the entire house down with it?

Does anyone have experience with this? I want to call an exterminator who has experience with carpenter ants infestations to see what he thinks of our situation. I know it's spring and the winged workers fly everywhere so maybe that's it but I want to be sure.

TIA

On year there was an upstairs bathroom we were remodeling and took part of it down to the studs. It was spring and somehow that bathroom got infested with carpenter ants. Had the pest guys come out and blow them all away and treat the area. Never saw another carpenter ant again. This was pre-Covid.

That's all I got.
