That was a very promising first episode, and I agree that the fork in the road was great.  I don't generally like subjectively judged challenges, but they have always been part of TAR, and I didn't see anything egregious.  I initially thought the "can't get a taxi" thing was blatant racism.  I was glad it turned out to be a simple language barrier, and that the team was doing something wrong.

And it didn’t seem she was scared going up. Only going down. Weird.

They explained it pretty clearly.  She suffered a really bad fall going down stairs and cracked her face open.  PTSD is real.

Maroon team dude is way too intense and if going to have an absurd blow up at some point.

They finished 2nd on their half and he was super pissed at the finish line. I feel sorry for his wife if she has a slip up at some point.

I know it's only two episodes in, but this is shaping up to be one of the best seasons of all time.  I like that even though they have designated travel agents, they still have some flight options to get some separation.

Agreed, good episode. The drumming challenge was really cool, and challenging. Loved bringing back the Intersection.

We liked the Sumo guy.  He was having fun with the contestants.  TAR couldn't have picked a better guy for the contestants to work with.  Right now, I'm thinking lumberjacks for the win.

I am pulling for the lumberjacks, but I think the top 3 teams are Jonathan and Ana, Brett and Mark, and Carson and Jack, in no particular order.

Episode 3 did not measure up the the high standards set by the first two, though it wasn't the worst episode ever.

The express pass was way too easy to get, and that ninja challenge was almost impossible.  How long do you think the "ninjas" who can actually throw those spikes had to train before they could reliable hit three in a row?  I bet it was considerably longer than any of the teams were at the challenge.  They could have given them 10 throws to hit three and no one would have gotten it.

Not yet. I'm looking forward to watching the meltdown when they struggle with a challenge.

Yeah, the spikes were tough enough on their own that it made the whole "perfect run" requirement ridiculous.

The producers have to know that was a fuck-up given that nobody completed that detour.

The spikes were basically just nails it looked like.  Imagine picking up a nail and trying to throw it and have it stick into a board.  I hate it when the two challenges are so unbalanced like that.  On top of not being real fair, it also makes for worse tv when everyone is doing the same task.

The weakest teams continue to be eliminated, which I suppose is a good thing.  I think mom and daughter are probably going to be in trouble if there are more physical challenges ahead, but they have been hanging in there, and navigation is the great equalizer.

That was a terrible use of the express pass, and I was glad to see it.  I'm not sure how I feel about the driver's seat.  The team who ends up in it is guaranteed to make enemies, which is obviously the point.  It could be lessened by taking the hardest challenge, but no team is going to do that.

We had another detour where most teams did the same challenge.  At least the other one was doable, and appeared to take about the same amount of time.  I wonder how it would have gone if the two teams doing it didn't work together?

I think most of us have been rooting against Jonathan and Ana since the beginning.  I'm also having trouble with Scott and Lori, other than when they are in direct competition with Jonathan and Ana.  Scott doesn't bother me so much, but Lori is really starting to get on my nerves.  She reminds me too much of Sue, from Survivor 1.  She also benefited from the complete lack of any quality control on the rice challenge.  I don't think she even touched her sieve.  The trash that ended up in her bag didn't add much weight, but she sure saved a lot of time by not making any effort to remove it.  I would not be surprised if she threw a few rocks in there while she was at it.

Having a blind live vote double u-turn is one way to make sure one of the best teams goes home.  This is a far cry from the seasons with multiple non-elimination legs and optional kumbaya u-turns.  It was a great chance to get rid of Jonathan, but at least Lori is gone.

Unless something changes, I'm pretty much in "anyone but Jonathan and Ana" mode, and I really have nothing against Ana other than her choice in partners.

Was going to post this same thing.

Yeah.  Good call to those that were bitching about Jonathan earlier this season.  Little bitch told Ana not to whine, then proceeded to whine the rest of the episode.  I'll never understand how folks can act like that knowing there's a camera in your face.

Exactly this. Jonathan is awful. Ana seems decent.

He starts saying his body was breaking down and it was like he couldn’t even function. What in the hell did he think happened to him during the coral challenge when other teams seemed just fine?

The way Ana was talking makes it seem like his breakdowns are a somewhat common occurrence. This was clearly not her first time watching him do that and you could tell she was walking on eggshells to avoid upsetting him more. Even her “Come on babe” encouragement was met with “Stop saying that.”

Their post race interview was very telling as well. Hers talked about how they help each other with struggles. His was all about himself - “I can compete with anyone here”, “This is not how I pictured my race,” etc. No credit to his wife at all, just me and I. Total egomaniac.

He’s clearly abusive and she needs to leave him. They separated once but she should make it permanent.

He's a narcissist. It's pretty normal for people like that to not see in themselves what they criticize in others, particularly their partners.

Yep. His "collapse" when faced with the prospect of failure was textbook. A lost little boy in the body of a man.

If Jonathan and Ana had not foolishly burned their Express Pass when they were easily in first place, they could have used it in this leg where he struggled, no?

Yeah, the hubris of using that pass to stay in first rather than saving it for a leg where they struggled... Just dumb.

Not only were they in first, but they had assigned 25 lbs to their 3 biggest competitors, and only 15 lbs to themselves. Getting to the Driver’s Seat first should’ve all but guaranteed winning the leg without extra help.

All of this.  He was getting on her ass in the cab when she was venting in a moving cab and then gets pissy when he is literally sitting still and she encourages him.  Our 8 year old daughter has really gotten into The Amazing Race this season and we have been very clear that theirs is a very unhealthy relationship.

I don't really get other teams' issues with the Mormons.  They kept calling them fake, etc, but I don't get it.  Them saying they're old and unathletic is not sandbagging, it is literally the truth.  Seems like the other teams were just frustrated that they kept losing to these two older parents of 8.  Giving them the U-Turn was the right move since they were a top team.  The mom got real fired up, but seemed to get over it pretty quick and got to work.

As I said, my 8 year old has really gotten into it, so we started an old season, randomly selecting Season 18 on Hulu.  It was an all star season with Mike/Mel (funny as my wife and I were watching The White Lotus), Jet/Cord, Kynt/Vixen (she had to ask what "goths" were), Kisha/Jen, Luke/Margie, Flight Time/Big Easy, Zev/Justin, etc.  Really good group of teams.

That was a great season. It also had the NFL cheerleaders and Mallory/Gary. Lots of fun teams.

Didn’t Kynt/Vixen drive about 2 hours the wrong direction when they got eliminated? Like record time for being horribly lost in TAR history. They were a pretty bad team that somehow managed to avoid elimination longer than they should’ve, kinda like the Hillbillies in their season.

The Dubai leg was pretty cool. Would’ve liked to see all the teams do the scuba challenge, but it was still good.

I liked Pops and Jeff and was sad to see them go. Old man is ripped. Hesitating for that train was a fatal mistake.

I actually like all of the remaining teams except Jonathan and Ana.

Yep.  I didn't think Pops and Jeff would win, but has been fun pulling for them.

The Fast Forward task was awesome, but determining who got to do it was pretty lame.  It was essentially determined by the person who got to skydive first.

Looks like more fireworks next week with another double u-turn.  That probably means that the Melinda and Erika will survive.  Melinda is a year older than Pops.  I love seeing the olds be competitive.
