Listened to the first 5 innings in the car on the home from Lake Jackson.  I thought it might be in my best interest to not to get involved on the board for fear of jinxing 'em.

Sweep upcoming tmrw.

Be here tomorrow Texas fans.   Dylan Volantis makes his first collegiate start.   Weiner and company have prepared him for this moment.   A good performance means we have a starting weekend rotation solidified.

Weather is forecast to be 57 degrees at game time but warming, 12mph N/NW winds.

Well, we did go on a 4 game bender last year, losing to 3 top 10 ranked teams + TxSt.  I'm not sure we've seen that level of competition (yet).

Fair. We need a couple of Tech, OSU or Illinois to be good in conference play to help prop up those wins.

Louisville and Ole Miss look to be quality wins.

I didn't see this posted - especially relevant considering Volantis' first start today as well as Grubbs' extended save Friday.

There's also an update on Whitehead and some insight to the coaching staff.

OTF Friday Morning Insider Baseball Notes:

Spoiler

After dropping their opener against Louisville in extra innings, Texas Baseball has been on a roll and is now 10-1 on the season. The Longhorns are set to host Santa Clara this weekend, but there's been a major change in the lineup.

As I reported yesterday, true freshman LHP Dylan Volantis was expected to be the Sunday starter going forward, taking over duties for Kade Bing. Texas made that official yesterday afternoon.

So why the change?

I was told that the staff felt like Bing wasn't throwing enough strikes and Volantis has been. Despite being new to the program and still 'learning the ropes', Volantis has handled it great. The coaches have all the confidence in the world in Volantis and feel this move will be a step in the right direction.

That's yet another leftie on the mound and I'm told that's right up pitching coach Max Weiner's alley.

"Max likes different," a source said. "Lefties usually show different stuff."

As for Bing, expect him to be moved to a reliever role for now. There's a chance that will change in the future, however.

---

Many of you have asked about Ace Whitehead, who is still recovering from Thoracic Outlet Syndrome surgery. I spoke with a couple of people regarding this and it looks like we'll just have to wait and see.

One source told me "maybe" when asked if Whitehead would play this year, while another was slightly more optimistic on the situation.

I will say that both the staff and those close to Ace want to make sure he is 100% before getting out on the field.

---

There's been a lot of high praise for Max Grubbs so far this season, with many fans believing he would be the go to guy when it comes to the closer role. The junior right hander has pitched 11 innings up to this point, only allowing seven hits and two runs, while striking out 11.

He's definitely been impressive and reliable, but I'm told that Texas most likely won't have a traditional closer this season and you'll see a few different faces throughout the season.

---

Texas fans are undoubtedly excited about the Horns success so far this season, but what about the coaching staff? It's safe to say they aren't satisfied at all.

This staff doesn't believe that the Longhorns are playing great currently, but they obviously view winning 10 games in a row as a good sign. They feel there is A LOT of room for improvement and are going to continue to play around with lineups to get a feel of who gives them the best chance to win consistently.
