Baseball’s about to get started again, but before the Cubs and Dodgers take the field in the Tokyo Dome on Tuesday, let’s take one more look back at last season, when baseball history was made, a decades-old record was smashed—and nobody noticed.

I’m talking about the Baltimore Orioles who, in 2024, hit into 71 double plays.

The 2024 Orioles’ 71 is the lowest full-season total in the history of Major League Baseball. No team hit into that few double plays when they only played 154 games. No team hit into that few double plays when they all wore wool pants. In fact, no team had ever hit into fewer than 75 double plays, a record set by the 1945 St. Louis Cardinals and equaled by the 2021 Tampa Bay Rays. The 2024 Orioles were, by a handsome margin, the best baseball team at not hitting into a double play that there has ever been.

You didn’t hear about this on ESPN or in the New York Times. You didn’t even hear about it from the Orioles themselves. That’s because they didn’t know. Sig Mejdal, the Orioles’ vice president and assistant general manager, told me he knew the team’s avoidance of the DP was a strength, but he didn’t totally believe me that the team had set an all-time record until he looked it up himself. “The people I’ve mentioned it to were quite surprised,” he told me.

Im hopeful the jettisoned ESPN deal will open the door for MLB expansion. 30 teams splitting the pie obviously didn't want to split it 32 ways. But now that big pie is gone maybe those 30 teams would like a piece of two new smaller regional pies.

Arguably a reason the 90s were such a golden age was expansion. New teams brought excitement and full houses and also a bunch of shitty AAA pitchers for the roided up hitters to feast on. Offensive numbers went way up after 1993, which was the year the league expanded from 26 to 28. But it also might have been the year steroids were invented idk

Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Paul Skenes' 2024 Topps Chrome Update MLB debut patch autograph card sold for a stunning $1.11 million, including buyer's premium, on Thursday.

It's a record paid for a Skenes card -- whose 2025 base salary is $875,000 -- and the most expensive modern, non-Mike Trout baseball card. A 1-of-1 Trout rookie card sold for $3.9 million in August 2020, then the most expensive sports card of all time.

The buyer's identity is currently unknown. The card was sold via Fanatics Collect.

The 1-of-1 numbered card with an on-card autograph includes a patch Skenes wore on his Pirates uniform during his major league debut, a conceit that MLB exclusive trading card licensee Topps developed and introduced for the 2023 season.

Pre-Skenes, the most paid for one was $150,000 in a private sale for Anthony Volpe's last summer. Jackson Holiday's MLB debut patch autograph card sold for $198,000, including buyer's premium, in Thursday's auction.

I was just telling my friend the other day that the one thing baseball is missing is more talent dilution at the MLB level. Great idea.

It is so depressing.  They have no idea what makes players good.  They thought Nolan Jones was going to be a star after his rookie year even though he had the worst chase rate and the highest BABIP in MLB.  Then they were just baffled that he sucked last season.   Now they think Tovar is their next star even though he has a .290 OBP and 50 BB and 375 Ks in his career.  And they keep promoting dudes through the front office, while hanging onto Bud Black for no apparent reason.  Adding Charlie Blackmon to the front office will hurt more than help if they're employing him to do anything more than shake hands.

The Colorado Rockies traded outfielder Nolan Jones to the Cleveland Guardians for Tyler Freeman on Saturday.

The addition of Freeman provides increased flexibility for Colorado after it lost Thairo Estrada to a broken right wrist. Freeman, 25, has made big league starts at second base, third, shortstop and center field.

Jones, 26, returns to Cleveland after he made his big league debut with the Guardians in 2022. The second-round pick in the 2016 amateur draft was traded to the Rockies in November 2022 for infielder Juan Brito.

Jones is looking to bounce back after he was limited to 79 games last year because of a back issue. He hit .227 with three homers and 28 RBIs.

Jones had a big year in 2023, batting .297 with 20 homers, 62 RBIs and 20 steals in 106 games. He finished fourth in balloting for NL Rookie of the Year.

Freeman was Cleveland's Opening Day starter in center in 2024. He hit .209 with seven homers and 32 RBIs in 118 games for the AL Central champions.

He was selected by Cleveland in the second round of the 2017 draft.

The Rockies visit Tampa Bay for their opener Friday, and the Guardians are at Kansas City on Thursday for Opening Day.

I mean I fucking hate Brett Gardner, but this fucking sucks

Brett Gardner -- former star of the New York Yankees -- has just announced the death of his 14-year-old son ... adding it came suddenly after he became ill along with a group of family members on a trip.

The 14-year MLB veteran and his wife, Jessica, announced the news in a heartfelt statement, released through the Yankees social media channels ... explaining their son Miller passed away Friday.

According to the Gardners, Miller and a group of other family members got sick while on vacation ... adding they have far more questions than answers at this point.

Brett & Jessica write Miller was a "beloved son and brother" who competed in a number of sports and enjoyed spending time with friends and family.

They add their thanks to those who have reached out to offer support and encouragement ... and, they're asking for privacy at this time.

So Mookie apparently can’t keep food down, & doctors are stumped. Won’t be at SS for awhile.

Remember that time MLB said we’re gonna start testing for the sauce and immediately Jason Giambi had a power outage and dropped like 30 pounds? If I remember correctly they tried to say he had a parasite or some shit. Not saying that’s Mookie’s problem, just reminded me of Giambi’s bullshit story.

Preliminarily, apparently the manner of death would be by asphyxia after a possible intoxication after apparently ingesting some food,” an Organismo de Investigación Judicial spokesperson told NBC News in a March 24 statement translated from Spanish. “At the moment it is a death under investigation and is awaiting the results of the autopsy, as well as the analysis of the Toxicology Section, to determine the exact cause of death.”
