What to know about Mount Spurr’s likely eruption

It’s showing all the signs: There have been recent earthquakes nearby, the volcano’s surface has expanded, there’s melting snow on its peak and there’s higher-than-normal emissions of volcanic gases.

“It's almost like we have a checklist of the usual signs that volcanoes give us before they progress to an eruption,” said Matt Haney, the scientist in charge at the Alaska Volcano Observatory. “And now we're seeing all four of those are giving us those indicators.”

Nah, we wrote response. So what happens AFTER one of these goes off. Group presenting was FEMA, DOD and State of Alaska.

Depending on the eruption, what direction does the Tsunami go?

All response gear, food, water, gensets, shelters, were going to need to be brought in by barge. So I ask, what if the port is gone?

Well we will fly it in.

What if airspace is fucked and the runways are covered in ash?

A whole room of this.

About 15 years ago, I had a project in Mat-Su Borough, so we obviously flew into Anchorage. I seem to recall that the town was on very flat, low-lying ground.

Yep, and if that river is running (snow melt, etc) then it is also going to flood.

The irony (NO CR) was we figured out we NEEDED Canada's support to do the movements.

So you say you used to work as an engineering writer, huh?

I was skiing in the Tordrillos in 2018 and took this pic of Mt Spurr in the distance - about 80 miles WNW of Anchorage ….

Hopefully, this won't be too disruptive.

From the Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO): Based on all available monitoring data, AVO regards the following scenarios as possible. We consider scenario 1, explosive eruption(s) like those in 1953 and 1992, as most likely at this time. Scenarios 2 and 3 (smaller eruption, or no eruption) are possible but considered less likely, and the likelihood of a much larger eruption is currently low.

  1. Explosive eruption(s) like those in 1953 and 1992: In this scenario, one or more explosive events, each lasting as long as a few hours, would produce ash clouds carried downwind for hundreds of miles and minor (up to about ¼ inch) ashfall over southcentral Alaska. The flanks of Mount Spurr likely would be swept by pyroclastic flows (hot avalanches) and impacted by ballistic showers. Mudflows (lahars) could inundate the upper Chakachatna River valley.
  2. Lava-forming and/or small explosive eruption(s): It is possible that the volcano could erupt less explosively than it did in 1992 and 1953, and produce lava flows, a lava dome, and/or brief explosive eruptions. Such events would have less far-travelled impacts, but lahars (mudflows) in the drainages around the volcano are possible.
  3. Failed eruption: If the magma stalls and does not reach the surface, as happened in 2004–2006, we expect to see earthquake activity, ground deformation, gas emissions, and surface heating slowly decrease over several weeks or months.
  4. Large explosive eruption: Eruption(s) larger than those in 1992 and 1953 could occur. These would likely result in larger ash clouds, thicker ashfall deposits and greater overall impacts. No such eruptions are known in historical times, and the geologic record suggests these are rare. Therefore, the likelihood of such an event is low.

I got stranded in Anchorage for a week in 2007 or 8 when Mt. Redoubt was spewing ash over the city. Continental wouldn't take a chance of frying their engines. Eventually the hotel wouldn't let people go outside lest you suck in ash glass. Got me out of jury duty and my next trip, so good times.

Did the hotel have booze?  Porn?  Other people making bad decisions?

You may have just described a week in heaven.

Tsunami? Do you mean lahar? That seems a long way from the water to cause a tsunami. I could absolutely be wrong though.

i used to have a bag of ash from an eruption that covered anchorage. pretty sure i was in 8th grade and looking up dates that may have been this volcano's last major eruption.

i was not allowed to open that bag. i wonder what happened to it?

Concern is it would be a big one. Cause earthquakes, etc. It was a scenario.

They still have a couple places downtown anchorage with splits in walls and shit to remember this earthquake. My ex dad was still pretty traumatized from it. Even a couple years ago feeling small earthquakes when visiting he would freak the fuck out bad.

Are you saying your dad lived through that? If so, come on. There's gotta be one helluva story behind that experience. Do tell.

Not really - dealing with thousands of these guys on Attu, then having to live in a tent on Adak for seven months afterwards kinda sucked for my dad 82 years ago…..

My middle brother was born at Fort Richardson in March 1942…..just before being evacuated with all the military dependents to Stateside because of the Japanese occupation of Attu & Kiska.

Brat, my uncle was a veteran of the ‘Devil‘s Brigade’ - the First Special Service Force.  They invaded Kiska only to find that the Japanese had left.  So they were sent to Italy to fuck up Germans (and so earned their nickname).

My dad landed on Kiska too - the only living thing they found in the abandoned Japanese camp was a half-starved dog.
It was quickly adopted by some of his troops and saved.

Your dad sold it to the local mortuary who gave it to people who believed their loved ones remains were in the urns.  The real question is what happened to the bodies...?

If that thing blows up larger than expected we need to start harping the warning that this is God and Jesus getting pissed for fucking with migrants and Canada. This is their warning shot before going full biblical on America's ass.
