This guy was supposed to be a big part of the Xavier team this season. I would think Miller would want him for Texas.

Texas would be a team that has a lot of length with who is coming back.

1. I forgot Dan Monson was still coaching.

2. Looked it up and saw he is now HC at eastern washington, just a few miles from where he got it all rolling with Gonzaga. He bolted after two seasons, probably at the first big school that came calling. And then Few stayed for the next 26.

This was someone I was really hoping would follow Xavier to Texas.

They would have been better than First Four this year if he was coming off the bench, behind Freemantle.

Starters:

  • G – Tramon Mark (Sr) – 6’5, 180
  • G - Jordan Pope (Sr) – 6’2, 165
  • F – Dailyn Swain (Jr) – 6’8, 220
  • F – Nic Codie (So) – 6’8, 200
  • F – John Clark (FR) – 6’9, 230

Bench:

  • G – Malik Presley (So) – 6’6, 200

Likely Returns

  • G – Chendall Weaver (Sr) – 6’3, 164
  • C – Jamie Vinson (So) – 6’11, 225

Potential Transfers

  • F - Lassina Traore (Sr) - 6'9, 215 - 2x All Big West, 11.9 PTS, 10.3 TRB, 70% FT%
  • G - Jacari White (SR) - 6'3, 170 - All Summit, 17 PTS, 2.3 AST, 4.3 TRB, 40% 3P%

If we could get Weaver, Traore and White, that would give us a solid foundation.  Swain and Traore would be a decent set of bigs, especially if Codie and Vinson can give good minutes off the bench.  And four senior guards in Mark, Traore, Pope and Weaver would give us a lot of versatility and depth.

As an aside, a backcourt of Jacari White + Chendall Weaver would be the most unusual looking combo in NCAA history, especially if Weaver shaved his head.

It's not logical, but after our run of pretty effective big men I'm getting tired of not having them.  Not that there aren't other ways to build a team, but it just feels like we always have a weakness down low.

Got hops.  41% from 3.  Why the mediocre stats?

Seems like a great replacement for Pryor. It’s weird because he played 20 mins a game and shot at a high %. Maybe he’ll get the green light here.

This seems like a great pickup. Every good team needs a white guy who can come off the bench and hit back to back 3s and drive opposing fans insane.

When he got minutes he seemed to put up decent stats and especially was rebounding better as the year went on. He averaged 7.3 pts and 5.3 rebounds in only 20 minutes during the conference and NCAA tourney. In those 5 games he only shot 3 FTs though, which is perhaps why he didn’t get minutes. He also didn’t have a single assist or steal while committing 14 fouls. So he is still a work in progress.

Shooting plus athleticism are great building blocks though. It seems like we only ever have raw players with one or the other trait. Maybe he will blossom with a change of scenery. We offered him out of high school.

dylan disu shot .451 on 3.6 attempts per game. i’ll try and find the last guy who did it on 4+ attempts per game.

Is he good enough to crack the starting lineup or is he going to be a bench contributor? His numbers don't look too good. I don't want Coach Miller to make the same mistake as RT did, which was to fill up the roster with bread and many here trying to justify how they were going to be good.

He played 20 mpg on a 4 seed Purdue team including 24 minutes against Houston in the Sweet 16. And last year played 15 minutes in the championship game. So he can be a contributor on a really good team.

It is safe to assume he will get better with another year of work, and he has two years of eligibility left. At worst this is a great add for depth. At best he makes a step this year and another next year and is a major asset.

2021- courtney ramey- .414 on 4.5 3pa

2018- andrew jones- .463 on 4.1 3pa

2009- aj abrams- .396 on 7.6 3pa

it's wild how every single offseason we have multiple posters going, “yeah, we just need a couple of big men, an athletic wing, and a couple of shooters and we’ll be good”,  not realizing that we almost never have even one actual shooter.

I doubt Miller could've sold Heide on UT to be just another bench contributor. He must be identified as a "sleeper" who's expected to have a break-out year with more PT. Highlight looked good

It’s kind is the standard portal story at this point … we need a couple big men who can defend and rebound in the paint … and make the bunnies when the opportunity is there …

and we need a steady point who doesn’t pick up his dribble at bad times, can hit a decent rate of outside shots when given an open look, and who can beat his man off the dribble and breakdown the defense to create open looks for teammates and/or draw fouls

RT failed on the big man portal front and the guards he brought in to play point were more off ball guards… and the height he did have in the team was young and not developed during the early season so that it might help a little during the conference play

Shedrick … for all the praise of working through so many injuries in his career was a faint shadow of a serviceable big man most games and there was nothing behind him to stop all the layups

I’m still trying to figure out whether many on this board over-rated the transfers brought in last year, or Terry just completely mismanaged them.

Thinking Miller wants high IQ basketball players his first year that won’t lose games because of bad shots and sloppy turnovers which has been Texas trademark.

The facts aligned with my feelings. Actually I'm surprised we've had this many.

I think he played everyone initially where most would think they’d fit but he was damn slow to adjust and scrap things that weren’t working … and he didn’t make an effort to get any of the young guys acclimated enough to provide any real growth or contribution

Weaver has averaged 19.3 minutes per game at Texas.  I'm pretty sure some of the stat junkies can point out some reason why he has gotten exactly as much playing time as he deserves, but my eyes tell me the team does better when he's on the court.  I hope Miller can find a way to play him more.

His handle is still a bit too shaky.  If/once it improves, he could be a premium rim attacker.

Team is shaping up pretty well and we should have room to add some nice pieces.  Obviously a big or two are the main needs at this point. Traore is a must get IMO. Would like to see Vinson go ahead and sign as I really liked what I saw from him last year in limited minutes.

Swain vs. Kaluma is pretty much a wash. Swain outplayed him in our game vs. Xavier.  Kaluma is a little better rebounder. Swain less of a ball stopper, more efficient, slightly better defender. I would expect additional improvement from him in year 3.  I would also expect a big jump in his 3P% given he is a great FY shooter.

Heidi vs. Pryor should be an upgrade. Hopefully we can get an elite guard and bring Cam off the bench.

Depends on what you mean by a shooter.  Tre Johnson wasn't over 40%, but a lot of that is due to the level of difficulty of the shots he had to take.  Some other guys were in the high 30s.

  • Tre Johnson - 39.7% on 6.8 (difficult) attempts
  • Javan Felix - 39.2% on 4.2 attempts (2015)
  • Tevin Mack - 39.1% on 5.8 attempts
  • Matt Coleman - 38.6% on 4.0 attempts (last 2 yrs)
  • Sir'Jabari Rice - 37.1% on 4.5 attempts
  • Marcus Carr - 36.8% on 5.9 attempts (last yr)
  • Jordan Pope - 36.4% on 4.7 attempts
  • Max Abmas - 36.2% on 7.5 attempts

Weaver averaged 40% from 3 last year and his freshman at UTA (on low volume). I wouldn't say he is awful.

Weaver sucks at shooting the ball, but he's badass at attacking the basket.

That's what I'm wanting to see more of next year with the offense. Attack the fucking basket.

Same with the women's team. Drive the fucking ball.

I still like Weaver as a sixth man who gets significant minutes and can play crunch time. But not sure we have the team composition (yet) to make that happen.

Most likely, it's the latter because they were good contributors at their respective schools before coming here. We just didn't have any offensive identity that let the guys be the best version of themselves. Maybe it's my battered RT syndrome, but I just can't get too excited about transfers who didn't shine in whatever teams and conferences they came from. It will be a nice surprise if they do better in the SEC but it's far from being given.

Really?  Outside of the two guys who made 1/1 and 2/2 3-pt shots, he was our best 3-pt shooter (8/20 = 40%).  His FG% was 50.5%.  He wouldn't be my first choice to take the most shots, bur he is nowhere near "awful".

Yes really. That's a tiny sample size, most of those came in our OOC against terrible opponents, they don't respect him as a shooter, and he's a terrible free throw shooter. He is an awful shooter. Wanna know where those 8 came from? Houston Christian, Chicago St x2, Syracuse, Arkansas Pine Bluff, New Orleans, Aggie, Tennessee. It's fine to acknowledge that and that he is still a positive player but it's going to be hard to have a good offense if he and Swain are out there at the same time depending on what center we get out of the portal.

Posted

It sounds like there is zero confidence in Miller to make the players we are keeping perform any better than what they did with Terry at the helm.  He also apparently isn't going to get anything out of all the bread he is bringing in from the portal.  Clearly we are doomed.  We may as well have hired a coach from Samford.

.600 from the FT line as a guard means you are awful and the reason why he doesn't get 25+ minutes a game but he has elite skills that translate to winning plays. It also helps that most of his production comes off hustle plays and offensive rebounds. Defenses don't really do anything special to defend him.

of that list, Tre is the only one whom i would consider “a shooter”. aj abrams, boobie gibson, dj augustin, KD, Tre…these guys exemplify what i think most people think of when they say “shooter”.

He shot 74% from the line last year and 75% this year after he returned from injury. I don’t think he was really “right” for most of the year. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him shoot in the high 70s next year, or better.

You don’t consider Max Abmas a shooter? He shot 39.4% BTA his last 3 years at Oral Robert’s on 9.2 attempts per game. Dude is #3 in NCAA history in career made 3s. I fault RT for not getting more out of him last year.
