Gerry also mentioned that Texas is also trying to get the big from FAU, Matas Vokietaitis. Said it was us and a blue blood, have to think that blue blood is Michigan due to Dusty May and Goldin's success moving up a level.

Wesley Yates from USC is in the portal. From Beaumont, but I think he’s all but guaranteed to go to Kentucky

He'd fit the need of a big guard that can shoot that Gerry mentioned as the likely last add from the portal.

I wonder if Tom Herman can put in a good word for us

Weaver has averaged 19.3 minutes per game at Texas.  I'm pretty sure some of the stat junkies can point out some reason why he has gotten exactly as much playing time as he deserves, but my eyes tell me the team does better when he's on the court.  I hope Miller can find a way to play him more.

He struggled playing off Pope/Larry (PGs who can’t get to the rim, score in the paint, lack elite shooting and didn’t create for others). Excelled with Mark and Johnson.

Early in the year he was trying more to initiate offense when our guards were struggling and Mark was out. We needed offense so bad, his FT and shooting weaknesses stood out. When he came back and we shifted our guard’s play to focus more on Mark and Johnson he fit better. He hit his peak when Mark went to PG because we had someone who created at the PG and allowed his off the ball game to thrive

Man, if we could get Lassina Traore and Matas Vokietaitis that would be fantastic.  That is the kind of big-man depth we need in the SEC.

Matas Vokietaitis- 7'0, 245, Sophomore, AAC Rookie of the Year

  • Season - 10.2 PTS, 5.4 TRB, 0.8 BLK, 63.6 FT%, 17.6 MPG
  • Last 6 gm - 16.2 PTS, 7.2 TRB, 1.8 BLK, 61.8 FT%, 23.3 MPG

Lassina Traore - 6'10, 245, Senior, 2x All Big West,

  • Last 2 yrs - 12.4 PTS, 10.4 TRB, 0.6 BLK, 69.1 FT%, 29.2 MPG

A lineup of 6'5 Mark + 6'3 Weaver + 6'8 Swain + 6'10 Traore + 7'0 Vokietaitis would be a lot of size, with a bench of Pope, Heidi, Codie, Presley.  Not bad.

Texas Hoops: Size everywhere, more portal additions to come

For years Texas fans have clamored for a roster with true bigs and size across the board. Well, Sean Miller is already proving he is your guy in that regard.

The three portal additions so far are a 6-foot-8 wing/F that will be an NBA draft pick when he leaves Texas, a 7-foot center that will very likely be an NBA prospect after two years in Austin and a very athletic 6-foot-7 wing/F that shoots it from three at 39%. And there will be two more portal additions to the roster, with one being another big man.

The current Texas roster now features five players that stand 6-foot-8 or more, with another 6-foot-10 addition on the way.

Texas current 2025-26 roster...

Tramon Mark, CG, 6-6, Gr. (10.6 points, 3.7 rebounds, 1.7 assists)

Jordan Pope, CG, 6-0, senior (11.0 points, 2.0 rebounds, 1.7 assists)

Chendall Weaver, G, 6-3, senior (6.9 points, 4.9 rebounds, 1.4 assists)

Camden Heide, F, 6-7, junior (4.7 points, 3.6 rebounds, 39.2% from three at Purdue)

Dailyn Swain, F, 6-8, junior (11.0 points, 5.5 rebounds, 2.6 assists, 1.6 steals at Xavier)

Matas Vokietaitas, C, 7-0, sophomore (10.2 points, 5.4 rebounds at FAU)

Malik Presley, G/W, 6-5, RS-sophomore

Nic Codie, PF,  6-8.5, sophomore

John Clark, PF, 6-8.5, freshman

Jamie Vinson, PF, 6-10.5, sophomore

Xavier player in portal Texas leads for ...
Lassina Traore, C, 6-10, senior (11.9 points, 10.3 rebounds, 1.2 assists in 2023-24 at LBSU)

Portal targets ...

Texas will take one more combo guard, and it will be a shooter with enough size.

The 13th scholarship…

Texas will be patient here. Could be a young PG or a skilled big to develop.

Sean MIller's staff ...

Chris Ogden - General Manager

Adam Cohen - Associate Head Coach

David Miller - Assistant coach

Ulric Malagi - assistant coach

Ryan Anderson - Assistant coach/Director of player Development

Ryan Reynolds - Special Assistant to the Head Coach

Cam Miller -Director of Operations

Andy Kettler - Head of strength & conditioning

The very likely next commitment

Gerry Hamilton

Lassina Traore will be a quality backup center/big to Matas.

Swain and Heide can play four out, with a skilled Swain at four in that lineup

Then it really comes down to the three young bigs ... who emerges as the season moves along ...

Nic Codie, PF,  6-8.5, sophomore ... a face up 4-man game offensively. Can run the floor.

John Clark, PF, 6-8.5, freshman ... the most skilled of the three training with TJ Ford over the years. But a freshman that missed majority of senior season with broken finger on shooting hand.

Jamie Vinson, PF, 6-10.5, sophomore ... a floor stretching 4/5 man that can protect the rim. Got to get stronger and continue to get more physical to hold position and rebound in traffic in the SEC.

But Texas has a number of options, and at least one of the three will emerge IMO this season as a key role player.

Without any additions, this is already probably a tournament team. If we can pick up Traore and an elite guard, it will really help our prospects.  I don't know if Swain will be an NBA draft pick as Gerry says, but if so that is a good sign.

Swain + Vokietaitas has more upside than Kaluma + Shedrick. Traore could move Swain to SF and give us a really big, physical lineup. Watching that clip of Traore, man he is a big body that is physical in the paint. He also has good hands and touch. Matching him up with Matas would be awesome. The two could play together or back each other up.

Swain and Heidi give us some versatility as either can play the 3 or the 4 if we want to go small. Or play both together with Matas or Traore in the post.

I like that we are getting some continuity with this team.  All our guards get another year together, including Presley. Codie and Vinson stuck around and still have 3 years left to improve (and have played a year with the guards).  Our portal additions all have 2-3 years of eligibility left.

Then factor in the fact that Miller is an actual coach, with an actual game plan, and I'm starting to get optimistic.

just need a couple more guards...

Do we know if the point guard and shooting guard Miller recruited at Xavier are interested at all in Texas? ... they'd be good roster additions if we cannot get plus type players from the portal.

This is a huge upgrade. Miller is a systematic coach on the offensive side of the ball. Shit, 2024-25 Texas would have looked much better on offense with Miller's sytem.

Need to wait and see who the paysites were talking about. They said something about a PG

Vokietaitas shot more free throws last year than any player on the Texas roster despite only playing 17.6 minutes per game. Sounds like he gets to the line a ton but also fouls a lot himself.

He averaged 2.7 PF

Shedrick averaged 2.8

I am sure he will cover PG a decent part of the time, but I'd like for him to get some good minutes off the ball too.

Shedrick played 27 mins per game.

2.7 per game for a guy playing less than 20 mins is a LOT. Not that it's a deal-breaker for a 19 yo big man.

I have to assume Matas will get a lot more patient on defense as he matures and gets experience at this level of competition.

He is currently averaging 8.8 fouls / 100 possessions.  Disu improved from 9.9 -> 7.7.  Shedrick 10.7 -> 6.1.  Bishop 9.2 -> 6.6

Me thinks Miller is gonna snag a point guard soon. I'm interested to see if Pope will bounce back in a fashion like Marcus Carr did after an underwhelming year one. Pope wasn't a turnover machine, but he didn't exactly excel in distributing the ball. Pope's mid range came to life towards the end of the season. Nice to see Miller land a young big with a ton of potential. That's where I believe the team was hurting the most last season after the departure of Disu. Shedrick was a nice bench quality player, but he just wasn't cut out to log a lot of minutes.
