how about when bob donewald improved our offense here at Texas? or did that not happen either?

Donewald is Beard’s player development guy. Hes fantastic, no argument on that role.

Remember when Beard’s defense was all due to Adams, according to the Tech tards on this board? Then it wasn’t. Did Rodney Terry run it? Did it carry over to his head coaching job? Nope.

Assistants teach what the head man wants to run. If Miller isn’t changing philosophy, assistant hires aren’t going to matter.

how about when barnes brought rob lanier back in 2011 and we had the best offense in Texas history? did an assistant coach change anything about the team then?

jesus christ what an asinine argument.

You mean when Barnes went to study the Jazz in the off-season before 2010-2011?  The offense featuring flex cuts and staggered screens?  You're crediting Rob Lanier with that?

I'm not gonna lie, this is a fucking weird thing to say. What do you think assistants do in college basketball? Go get the head coach coffee and donuts while he tirelessly teaches every player on the roster every aspect of the game and draws up the entire offensive and defensive schemes the team will follow?

Look at Grant McCasland, do you think he was known for offense before he came to Tech? There isn't a person alive that would have predicted his first two Tech teams would play offense like they did. Do you think Chris Beard came up with the style of no-middle defense he likes to play all by his lonesome? No, a good coach finds assistants that, yes, fit his particular style, but will also help him come up with schemes that fit the current meta and construct a roster that will fit those schemes.

Given this kind of comment and a lot of your posts in the coaching search thread, I'm starting to think you don't actually have the first clue as to what you're talking about.

You've jumped to a number of conclusions here.

As far as the coaching search, I just post what I hear.  Just like when Beard to Texas became a thing.  You and the other tards denied it, you were wrong.  Go back and read that thread when I chime in.  Assistants in CBB believed McCasland would be attainable.  The Baylor thing was real the year prior.  In the middle of the run this season, things change obviously.  Did Beard and A&M become a thing?  Who called that first?  Same info from the same sources.

And Linder at Tech is a great example of a head coach turning his offense over to an assistant.  That is a different scenario.  He was willing to do that and it's a credit to McCasland.  What I'm saying is, if you aren't willing to do that, who you hire isn't going to matter.  I don't see how Miller's defense is going to improve if he isn't willing to adapt or change.  If McCasland wanted to still coach O at a snail's pace, Linder wouldn't have mattered.  He wouldn't have taken the job either....

That 2nd tweet addition is something that we Mike the shit out of Looch & Friends for when someone predicts it and the. It appears 6 to 24 hours later.

That said, in this case I believe it.

If you listen to the On Texas Basketball podcast they've discussed him leaving as a possibility. Said if he stayed he'd be their "development guy."

Sounds like he's currently a good slasher on offense but can't shoot real well

IIRC they have 2 (maybe now 3) scholarships left and the idea was there will probably be one more "big" addition in the portal who will be a contributor and the other scholarship will go to a guy with potential who they intend to take next season to develop before contributing in the 2026-27 season

from 89, 100, 92, and 69, to (HELLO) 3, and then 2 in AdjD with the hiring of an assistant coach.

i swear to god i have no idea where you people come up with this stuff.

What is interesting here is that his best overall season came with the 89th ranked defense.

We definitely need a PG or a combo guard or for me a three point specialist with an Eastern European last name.

We aren't lacking in size anymore that's for sure.

I don’t disagree, but I thought I heard Mark aspires to play PG.

I prefer an unselfish PG who is not looking to shoot first.

Mark distributed it well in his last 5 games of the season running point.  He has the ability to get to the basket and was killing people on drive and kick.

I would like to start this group and play a physical style of basketball:

  • PG - Mark:  6'6
  • SG - Weaver:  6'3
  • SF - Swain: 6'8
  • PF - Traore: 6'10
  • C - Vokietaitis:  7'0

Then bring Pope and Heidi off the bench.  We are very thin at guard though. We really need someone who can give us a reliable 15-20 mpg at PG/SG.

Absolutely. I don't consider Mark to be a good point guard, at his best here in Austin he has been a serviceable point guard. He played in 29 games and had a total of 49 assists, with a season high of 5.  And after him we have shit.

I’m trying my hardest to not go derka here but when you look at that, if you took the burnt orange away and longhorn, I would probably guess that is drake or Cincinnati’s roster. I get that it’s a transition year but damn do I miss the days of multi 5 star rosters. I don’t get why we aren’t signing at least one if not two of the transfers each year. Yes this is me pulling the, “we’re Texas” card but how are we not pulling in top tier talent? It at least got me excited to watch 5 star rosters, never trusted Barnes coaching wise but at least he got the players here. I know, give miller time and I will but there are great transfers out there…

I mean outside of Tre Johnson that’s a better roster than last year. We just need one more guard to round it out.

Shid how we gone score lol?
Hopefully some of those bigs can shoot!

Nah for real though, we can look at anything in a negative light, I just hope we make tournament . I don’t have sky high aspirations . Just make us competitive and a tourney team for next season.

I think the roster is better than Drake / Cincinnati, and better than last year.  Mark and Heidi got significant minutes for title contenders in Houston and Purdue.  Swain outplayed all of our bigs last year and has another year to improve.  Matas and Traore both have potential to be All-SEC.  Pope was 7th in the Pac-10 in scoring at Oregon State before RT misused him.

I think there is a lot to work with when you include Weaver and Codie.  Add another really good guard and we are set.  I'm pretty happy given the short time to pull it together.

I also like the continuity of bringing back most of our guards.  Also like that Traore and Swain have experience playing together for Miller.

Even more reason we need someone else to play the point. Contributing 15 assists and 10 turnovers in 4 postseason games aint gonna get it done, if thats the evidence of his floor mastery.

team definitely needs a floor leader. this will be the first big test to see what kind of NIL pull miller has here.

in fact, the guy we needed already signed with tennessee.

we don’t just need “a” point guard, we need a ready-made stud, preferably one who knows how to get to the line with frequency. i don’t know who’s still out there for the taking, but we need to be pulling in the best out there. so far it’s mostly just guys coming along with miller. need to see what he can actually pull from the portal when/where we need it.

I agree it looks like we need more more guard and then we’ll be set.

I’d be shocked if the team didn’t take a step forward from last season’s poop show.

I can’t think of a lot of rosters out there loaded with multi 5 starts except maybe Duke.

it’s funny people say stuff like the above then when we had those rosters, we would more often than not get beat by teams who had rosters like what Miller has put together today.

You’re also probably trying to apply football principles to basketball, which is probably the dumbest thing to do.

The early rumors were that Mark was going to portal because he wanted play PG full time, then all of a sudden he stayed. I’m guessing some promises were made by Miller.

Regardless of that though, we only have 3 guards on the roster and one of them is Weaver, who doesn’t really play like a guard. We need at least two more imo.

My understanding is that we're looking more for a combo guard than a true point guard. Could be looking overseas.

I don't have huge concerns about the first year, but part of that is my expectations are pretty low. About like they were for Beard's first year, and I had a lot more fun watching that team improve over the course of the season than many on here did. What I want to see is the program moving in the right direction? Does Miller have a vision for what he wants to see out of his team, and can he create the necessary buy in? Miller's strengths are on offense, so how do we look running more uptempo, and is he able to help the players create open looks? I already know the defense isn't going to be what I want it to be, but can he make up for that in other areas? And then after that first year, how much is he able to upgrade the roster in his second season?

"Mostly guys coming along with Miller" except the 7 foot all conference Lithuanian. If he pulls a good guard we're in high cotton for season one.

For PGs, looking like the Princeton and UC-Riverside guys are the only decent uncommitted players

A few more "combo guards" around

Dug McDaniel also just entered. 4.9 assists per game

give me another shooter who with good 3 pt and FT percentages (with the addition of decent to + defense would be awesome) and a good PG who can bring the ball up court, play good defense on opposing PG, and hit a wide open shot at a good clip (with addition of being able to beat a man and draw a foul would be awesome)... then I think we have a very good shot at improving significantly (coupled with the better rebounding and size and the better coaching)
