It does. I use it when I take mine to Eeyore's.

I take her to home Depot for walks when the blast furnace is in effect.

Many surly tailgate attendees can attest to her perfect behavior.

I was at the Arbor Home Depot when a large German Sheppard dropped a duce in an aisle, it is something you will never forget.  Place cleared out like there was an active shooter.

Once a year or so my dog (RIP) would run off so I would wait for someone to call the number on his collar and I would answer "Where is Max?".

The best answer was "Uh, he's in the dog food isle at HEB."  And he was.  Surrounded by people petting him.

IMO easiest solution is a true service dog gets a service dog chip and businesses who don't want non-service dogs have a chip reader at the entrance(s).  Dog fails the chip reader, an industrial dog whistle goes off.

Let’s give the owners a matching chip too so they can’t enter unless both dog and owner chips are scanned and matched up to each other.

Ban all dogs from public places or allow smoking again. I might as well start taking up the habit and corrupt all your food, flights, rental cars and hotels.

Dog hair lingers and people are allergic to it and they kind of smell. I can always tell a dog hotel even when they say no dogs on that floor.

There are bars that are dog friendly, parks that are dog friendly, especially those with fenced in dog runs.

But seeing dogs pissing in the playground mulch is disheartening, even as my kids are aging out.

I don't mind the Lowes / Home Depot dog generally because the aisles are big and rando with a dog is easy to avoid.  Wouldn't bother me if they changed their policy they are the ones cleaning up the piss and shit.  No one should be bringing their dog anywhere that serves food.

Actual service dogs are incredibly expensive because of all their training, so only the people that actually need them have them.  I've never seen one that wasn't a retriever.  It's not hard to tell the difference.

German Shepherds and Border Collies are used pretty often as epilepsy dogs. But, yes, your point stands. It’s not hard to tell a highly trained service dog apart from a pet.

While I don't necessarily disagree with the general sentiment of the thread, do y'all find this is a common problem for you? I literally cannot think of a single time I've been bothered by someone having a dog in a store and I can only think of a handful of times where I've even noticed the presence of a dog in store.

When people take their dogs to a bar/ restaurant that has patio seating; I don't have an issue with it.  It is cool to get the dogs out and it can make it a great day for everyone.  Even an untrained dog can be mightily therapeutic in the right environment.  I don't have a problem with the dogs themselves.

When it's in a store or business, I just get the overwhelming feeling, and I am admittedly judgy AF in this case, that it is entirely about the owner and not the dog.  I just immediately assume they are problematic in other ways as well.  Again, not the dog.  and again, I know I am likely way off base with that judgment.

Expand

I get that. I've never taken a dog into a store and I don't understand why people do. But I also don't remember a dog in a store ever bothering me in the slightest. Is it just the presence or are y'all actually being annoyed by the dog in some way?

Well I don't take dogs to HEB so don't be mad at me. As far as your relative peace when you grocery shop, or any other part of your life, I really couldn't give less of a shit about that.

The owner's decision bothers me.  The dog can be perfectly behaved and isn't bothering anyone. It doesn't belong there.

When I go to Home Depot, im not typically picking out produce or buying food items to feed my family.  Sorry, but there is a difference.  I take my pup to Home Depot all the time, but shes well behaved, trained, and i prepare in advance to ensure no accidents indoors (like a fucking adult).   ITS ALSO HOME DEPOT POLICY TO BE DOG FRIENDLY.

The type to take their dog everywhere, is likely not the type to make sure they have done their business and wont bother anyone else with their behavior.

I wouldn't take my dog to HEB for innumerate reasons, and I cannot see a good reason to take a dog inside a grocery store beyond its what "I wanna do and its my baby and i cant leave it alone!".  There is a literal rule against it, and these people are violating that by using the cover of folks that actually have a physical need for a service dog.  It's shitheel behavior, and again, not about the dog itself.

Although those little yappy cunts can get absolutely fucked.  Get a cat instead.

Assuming they are behaved, It only bothers me if there is shit & piss involved which if allowed there would be at some point.  I don't want piss or shit around me with food involved.  I don't have them, but there would also be allergy issues if it were a smaller enclosed space.  I've never seen a dog in a restaurant, so I don't know if that's actually a thing.  I've seen them on patios, but never indoors.

What the fuck is wrong with you. The store out of Bota Boxes last night?

There’s a dive bar in my neighborhood that also serves food. They allow dogs on their patio and look the other way on dogs indoors as long as the pup is chill. It kind of adds to the ambiance of the place and I enjoy saying hello to the dogs that hang out there. It’s a dive so I’m clearly not worried about the overall hygiene of the place. Like anything, it’s context and situational awareness. Can a well behaved dog at a dive bar be cool? Sure.

Dogs on patios are great.  Just have a policy clearly indicating whether it's a dog-friendly place so patrons can chose to be around them or not.  If they allow it, and a dog does some dog shit, don't get pissed.  They are allowed and you were informed they'd more than likely be there.

A great example is the pizza place Cane Rosso in DFW.  They not only allow dogs, they encourage it and even have rescue days for dogs needing homes.

When I lived in PHX, a brewery in my neighborhood that had an awesome patio was the same with regards to dogs. It was a blast with all the dogs. The dog rescue they hosted was for pitties. That would really get some of the folks around here triggered.

I was eating lunch at the HEB today (bbq) and someone brought their dog (looked like a mid-size to large dalmation type dog) with some sort of harness and they walked through the food area. They got some glares and looks, but that's really about it. Probably not enough to deter the selfish without a formal policy from HEB themselves.

So yea, it's a common problem and happened 55 minutes ago.

I've seen it in Lowes, never in a grocery store.  If they are allowed in it's going to happen occasionally regardless of me being present or not.  Like I said with food it affects more than just those who witnessed it.

You've clearly never picked up a product from the bottom shelf in a Home Depot only to find it covered in dog piss.

This is largely a post-pandemic thing.  In a very short period of time, it became all the rage to bring your damned dog with you EVERYWHERE.  Dude, I'm a dog person, had dogs most of my life....but WTF?  No, you don't need to bring your dog to the goddamned grocery store.  And the Jiffy Lube.  And the coffee shop.  And the dry cleaners.  And fucking everywhere else.  I don't much care about some of those, but 1) we don't need dogs all over where food is sold and prepared, and 2) not all people love your precious Mr. Fluffywumps as much as you do.  Some people have a phobia, or an allergy -- maybe think of them.  They shouldn't have to wonder whether they are walking into a situation with a dog they are afraid of (I'm not one of them, I think it's "silly," but it's real) when they go to buy their groceries.
