In Austin Texas there are so many locations for socializing your dog outside of a grocery store. Hell that statement is also true for almost all major cities now. Most have plenty of dog friendly bars, tailgates, restaurants, coffee shops, music venues, events, and dog parks.

I live in Nashville and there is a rooftop hotel bar that is dog friendly.

Dog Friendly Bars Austin

Claiming that you need to take your dog to the fucking grocery store for socializing is a dick head excuse for being an asshole.

Your dog get zero pleasure or socializing in at a grocery store.

I love taking my girls places, but they are high energy and attention seeking. So, I take them to places with other dogs, space to move around and people who like dogs. That and there are no HEBs in this ass backwards state any damn way. Not that they would be open if there were.

Because Im a reasonable, responsible, and I like to think good dog owner.

Agreed but don't take your dog to dog parks. It's stupid and dangerous and most people don't realize it.

I don't disagree with your broader point of issues at dog parks. However, I live on 40+ acres and my girls have to work around white tail, coyotes and the very, very rare bear. I've also volunteered doing behavior training for shelters throughout my life. I spot trouble people pretty quick, which usually means dogs with issues and GTFO, or go to parks with far fewer people bigger spaces. So, your concern is noted but the Redneck Princess and Drama Queen will be okay.

Yeah I've just seen too many dog fights to think it's a good idea. I saw one dog nearly kill another, would not let go of its throat, I had to cut its collar off with my pocket knife to get the dog free of the other dog's jaws, and those two dogs lived together. Any dog can become unpredictable and dangerous when they get around that many other dogs and get overexcited.

To be fair, that applies to most of us at Texas-OU, so....yeah.

Good point but I don't think quite right.

I think it's the housing affordability issue (hinted at earlier). Stay with me here.

In the past, adults could grow up and leave apartments or condos or tiny rented places with no yard or shared yards and buy their own 3/2/2 to settle down, start a family, whatever. Then they would have babies and/or buy pets. They had the appropriate room and services to accomodate them.

With housing being such a crisis (e.g. starter homes almost non-existent, another thread), more "kids" aka young adults are staying in apartments and multi-tenant living a whole lot longer. Maybe until their middle ages and maybe forever for all I know. So there is no more waiting until you buy a house and next phase of your life which includes a pet, but rather, if you want a pet you have to get it in suboptimal living conditions.

So then you buy your best friend and now have a pet that lives in 500-1000 sqft area without an easy access yard or even patio sometimes, landlocked between hundreds of other 500-1000 sqft rooms, anywhere from 1-5 stories up.

Because of this, pets probably dont' get as much exercise or outdoor time (I mean, the owner tries but it's harder to take the elevator or walk the flight of stairs and meander down to the tired patch of grass all the other pets have trod over, multiple times a day) and so owners rationalize that it's lucky bit of synergy. They need to run errands (HEB, restaurants, etc.) and the dogs need to not be locked in a soulless apartment, so why not take them with them.

Seems right to me, at least. Maybe dog owners who live in apartments and can't afford housing (if any post here) can confirm or deny.

I think this is spot-on. My post about single people and dogs was purposefully hyperbolically silly.

Sorry your married. I have sympathy for you.

I appreciate that.    :)

I'm the pain in the ass in my house, lucky to be here, and well aware of it.  I was just being silly.

I have only taken my dogs into one store and it was a Petco to get them some shots. I don’t take my dogs to the grocery store. I don’t mind seeing dogs at the grocery store though. I do understand people taking issue with seeing pets in a store where food is sold. If a store is willing to let them in though so be it. You won’t see my two in a grocery store or any other store outside of a pet store.

I love my dog. I hate bringing my dog anywhere that isn't a park.

I don't even like taking him on a hike because he's old and slow and pees every 5 feet.

It is not just that, there are people with allergies who react to it which can lead to wheezing and difficulty breathing.  Even minor exposure can trigger chronic immune responses which isn't good for overall health.

Oh and things like ring worms, mrsa, salmonella, hookworm and giardia. Plus of course, dogs shed, and their paws can carry dirt and bacteria, potentially contaminating food and surfaces.

Dogs at bars? Nope. Dogs at HEB? Nope. Dog in a back yard. Yep. People are very stupid with their leashes. I don't want to trip over that shit because you are distracted looking at a coupon.

My ex loved taking her dog everywhere.

We are going to home depot to get paint. Fido can stay home.

I call bullshit, but maybe you should stop shopping at the HEB where the bored housewives shop. Be brave. Go to some of the lower income areas of town. I promise you it's probably entitled, higher income white folks.

But then you’re talking about upsetting the pert yoga pant ratio.

This thread is peak surly. Also Brisket coming up with three grocery store items and them being "lemons and chicken and saltines" like he's shopping directly for ingredients for the steel shank thread. Can't wait for yard bird ceviche to make its appearance there.

Yeah, its great to see how we all came together ultimately in agreement. Dogs don't belong in HEB, kids are terrible things, and @Brisketexan is a Llamaphobic, penitentiary chicken loving, neo-Alapacan man, open to new ideas and ways of looking at the world. A positive light of happiness in every thread.
