I'm not saying that, but there are more shitty parents than shitty dog owners. Way many more encounters with people not controlling their children at HEB than people not controlling their dogs. I've rarely seen a dog in an HEB.

Glad she's not a psycho dog, but sincere question: why do you need or want to take the dog to the store?

Other than her helping pick out the best riding mower of course.

In general as Brisket mentioned, dogs can stress out others but that's never in an owner's equation it seems. Dogs are out of control and suck usually because their owners can't control them, and suck.

I don't have a dog phobia but I've been bitten at a former condo because the owner couldn't be bothered to control his dog and it ran up, while on a long leash, and bit my leg. Wife got bit while walking into a convenience store by someone who brought their dog there.

For people who argue "dogs are the same as kids" -- I feel sorry for their children. Or them maybe for how their parents treated them.

It’s a dog friendly business.

I’m an adult and care for my animals properly, at home and in public.

I’m aware of my surroundings and always factor in dumbass motherfuckers doing dumbass shit.

it’s good socialization for my dog, whether you believe that shit or not.

All cool stuff.  Grocery stores are made for humans to shop in, not dogs.  I don't dislike dogs, I love dogs.  They just don't belong there.  And yes, human children do belong in grocery stores, because grocery stores are for humans.  Shitty parents should get called out when their shitty kids do shitty things in human places, that will always be true.  Also, young children cannot be left at home alone.  Like, it's literally against the law in most circumstances.  Dogs, however, can and should be left alone lots of times.

Grocery stores are for people, not for dogs, or cats, or llamas, or any other animal you may love that you just HAVE to bring with you as you pick up lemons and chicken and saltines and whatnot.  I dig dogs and cats and llamas.  But they still don't belong at HEB.  Unless they're in a package on the meat aisle, of course.

Sure, there are going to be way more encounters because there are going to be many more people bringing their kids to HEB. A 4-year-old girl or boy can't be left home alone, but a 4-year-old dog can, and should be.

Growing up, I never recall seeing dogs in stores.

Now I see them probably once or more every 5 store visits, at various stores. I roll my eyes every time.

It is a manufactured need to bring a dog everywhere.

Dogs will survive at home alone for an hour, or can be walked or brought to a dog park.

Any store other than pet stores. And even then unless you are taking them to get groomed it’s stupid to take your dog there. Take your dog to dog park if you want them socialized.

This.  We used to take our dog on walks around the hood, time to run off-leash at a dog park, all that stuff.  Room to roam in our yard as well.  And of course, lots of hunting trips.  She got out plenty.  She didn't need to go to HEB when I had to go grab milk and eggs.

I call bullshit, but maybe you should stop shopping at the HEB where the bored housewives shop. Be brave. Go to some of the lower income areas of town. I promise you it's probably entitled, higher income white folks.

I think this is a significant issue that probably factors in to some owners insisting on "taking their dogs out."

I lived in a downtown condo a while back. There were more dog owners in those small condos than in my current neighborhood with large yards and acreage.

And all of those dogs, every damn one, barked their heads off at any passersby day and night, and that was where I got bit by a "non aggressive" breed.

The owners were not doing those dogs any favors.

Me, on many occasions, to them and their dogs:

That is actually not wrong at all.  I shop primarily at three HEBs.  Two of them in NW Austin, one of which is pretty white and higher income.  That is absolutely where I see the most dogs.  The other one, which is bigger with a more mixed bag, very few dogs.  The third HEB -- the "United Nations" HEB at Lamar and Rundberg (GREAT mexican groceries available)....I've never seen a dog there.  Not once.

So, yeah, the "I have to bring Mr. Snugglybutt Fluffywumps with me wherever I go" is absolutely an issue with entitled white folks, almost exclusively.  And again, my observation is that it skyrocketed post-pandemic.  Maybe after people got used to spending all day at home with their pets, so now they want their pet with them wherever they go?

Use your discretion and shop when your spouse or nanny can look after them, or just like the dog people, order curbside.

I'm including all stores not just HEB. I also include coffee shops, patios and anywhere else where dogs, a few years ago, were never seen. I'm not a fan of them there either.

We went to a busy TexMex patio last week. Two dogs at an adjacent table barking loudly at people walking by. Owners did nothing, just laughed. We moved inside, but only after I had my toddler go over and kick the people in their shins (I wish).

Dogs used to just be at home in yards.

Or were being walked.

Or at a park, maybe.

I don't even think dog parks were a thing until the 90s, or probably later. But still dogs were not taken everywhere back then.

I don't travel much internationally, but I am curious if the dog culture here happens in Europe or elsewhere.

Feels like a uniquely self-important American activity.

Posted (edited)

Maybe don't go to places that claim to be dog-friendly? They seem to not be for you. I'm sure there are places that don't allow dogs on the patio. Not everyone needs to cater to your preferences. Use your power of choice.

EXACTLY.  Like, for example, the goddamned HEB shouldn't cater to people's inexplicable desire to bring Mr. Fluffywumps with them EVERYWHERE THEY GO.   You love your dog. Great, that's awesome for you, and your dog.  But maybe don't impose on all of society all the time wherever you go by insisting that Fluffwumps be there too.  That's all that this is about.  It isn't anti-dog.  It's about appropriate "time and place."

Re kids, for example, society is and has been just fine with kids at a grocery store.  On the other hand, we are NOT fine with having erratic and potentially crying toddlers at a michelin-star fine-dining restaurant.  If you had to sit next to a crying toddler at Barley Swine, most of us would agree that such behavior was bullshit and the parents were shitty and hell, we even like nice restaurants that say "please no young children."

Young children are not appropriate to take some places.

Dogs are not appropriate to take some places.

Don't disagree, but we have people complaining about dogs on patios where the business clearly allows it. I get the grocery store argument, but give me a break complaining about dogs at a dog friendly establishment. It that business model works for them, good for them.

I have no problem with dogs on patios where allowed.  Maybe others do, but that's definitely a "hey, the business allows it, so chill."  Hell, I like it when I see a place with a patio and fresh water bowls and whatnot, I think it's a nice courtesy.  And I enjoy it if a well-behaved dog is sitting at the table next to me, and lets me give him chin-scratches and whatnot.  I miss having a dog.

Just all things in their appropriate time and place.  And yeah, even if a grocery "allows" it, it's still a crappy idea.  On the other hand, take your dog to the outdoor farmer's market on Saturday?  Cool, sounds like a nice little outing, so long as your dog isn't an ill-behaved hellbeast, in which case you shouldn't take him anywhere, even where dogs are allowed.  And yeah, that logic applies to kids as well.  There were phases in our kids' lives where we just didn't go out to eat anyplace that didn't have a playground where they could run free and be hellions, because that's where they were developmentally.  Lotta dinners eaten frazzled on the patio at Central Market next to the playground for a time.  What we DIDN'T do is say "hey, kids are allowed in this restaurant, so tough shit that you have to listen to my daughter cry about the fact that they won't cut her pancakes into dolphin shapes."

I'm fine with dogs. We're planning on getting one in the next few months after we finish some home remodeling. We won't be taking it with us to shops and restaurants and grocery stores, even "dog-friendly" ones.

But you're saying the solution to dogs being allowed at places I enjoy, that not long ago didn't have dogs, is for me to stop going to these places? I hardly feel my preferences are being catered to in that situation. And yes, if it became a thing where we can't enjoy that environment because of unruly dogs, obviously we'd find another restraurant.

A business can of course change their policies without consulting me, or anyone. If it works for them, and there are THAT many more happy customers to offset the loss of customers unhappy with the situation, then it's a smart business move.

I doubt they've surveyed their customers on this or have arrived at a clear consensus. They probably just said "Eh, we don't want to confront this problem. Let them stay."

But I admittedly -- in the tradition of surly -- have diverted this away some from the original issue.

HEB isn't claiming to be a "dog friendly" place. HEB's own policy:  "At H-E-B, we are committed to the health and safety of our customers," the grocer told the Chronicle. "While pets are not permitted, service animals are welcome in our stores."

The dogs I see there are not service animals.

HEB just needs to apply their own policy.

I'm saying go somewhere that does cater to your needs, since sharing outdoor space with a dog is a problem for you. That's their business model and if it doesn't suit you, just go somewhere else. It's pretty simple. If you know longer enjoy it, then stop going. Think of it as Texas Football in the 2010's

I read those books to my kids.

If You Take a Mouse to School

If You Give a Pig a Pancake

If You Buy A Pig a First Class Seat to Cancun, etc.

There's the moral to all this. Animals in unusual places in story books are cute and funny. In real life I lose out on enchiladas and queso. Life is rough.

Lost in all of this is that 99% of people who take their dogs everywhere are single people.   Please don't mistake this as me suggesting they deserve our pity, for the complete opposite is the case.  They already lead quiet, uncomplicated, bliss-filled lives of individual freedom and still insist upon subjecting those of us slogging through the mayhem of sharing our lives and living spaces with loud, opinionated, and unruly spouses and children to their shit and piss-filled little emotional crutches that are never even half as well behaved as they think they are.  Fuck these people and their exceptional fucking lifestyles.  These are not the people who need a living, breathing teddy bear with them at all times.  They have already won.  They should feel nothing but comfort as they glide through their days of not being concerned with anything but their own needs and desires.  Next time I see one of them I'm going to steal their dog for my own emotional well-being.  It only seems fair.

Good point but I don't think quite right.

I think it's the housing affordability issue (hinted at earlier). Stay with me here.

In the past, adults could grow up and leave apartments or condos or tiny rented places with no yard or shared yards and buy their own 3/2/2 to settle down, start a family, whatever. Then they would have babies and/or buy pets. They had the appropriate room and services to accomodate them.

With housing being such a crisis (e.g. starter homes almost non-existent, another thread), more "kids" aka young adults are staying in apartments and multi-tenant living a whole lot longer. Maybe until their middle ages and maybe forever for all I know. So there is no more waiting until you buy a house and next phase of your life which includes a pet, but rather, if you want a pet you have to get it in suboptimal living conditions.

So then you buy your best friend and now have a pet that lives in 500-1000 sqft area without an easy access yard or even patio sometimes, landlocked between hundreds of other 500-1000 sqft rooms, anywhere from 1-5 stories up.

Because of this, pets probably dont' get as much exercise or outdoor time (I mean, the owner tries but it's harder to take the elevator or walk the flight of stairs and meander down to the tired patch of grass all the other pets have trod over, multiple times a day) and so owners rationalize that it's lucky bit of synergy. They need to run errands (HEB, restaurants, etc.) and the dogs need to not be locked in a soulless apartment, so why not take them with them.

Seems right to me, at least. Maybe dog owners who live in apartments and can't afford housing (if any post here) can confirm or deny.

In Austin Texas there are so many locations for socializing your dog outside of a grocery store. Hell that statement is also true for almost all major cities now. Most have plenty of dog friendly bars, tailgates, restaurants, coffee shops, music venues, events, and dog parks.

I live in Nashville and there is a rooftop hotel bar that is dog friendly.

Dog Friendly Bars Austin

Claiming that you need to take your dog to the fucking grocery store for socializing is a dick head excuse for being an asshole.

Your dog get zero pleasure or socializing in at a grocery store.

I love taking my girls places, but they are high energy and attention seeking. So, I take them to places with other dogs, space to move around and people who like dogs. That and there are no HEBs in this ass backwards state any damn way. Not that they would be open if there were.

Because Im a reasonable, responsible, and I like to think good dog owner.
