Why not take the Heathrow Express to Paddington and then take the tube from there.

I'm far from an expert, but I don't think Kensington is that far away.  And Heathrow Express is tough to beat.  Relatively cheap and fast.

This is the way. If you are not riding from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. or 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. It will be fine. If you are riding in that time frame, it will be a bit crazier but will also be fine. Lots of luggage toters on the express and the tube nowadays.

We stayed in Kensington Gardens 2 years ago and after checking the train routes, we were gonna have to take an Uber on from Paddington anyway, so we just got one from Heathrow. Make sure you have international coverage or get a SIM card from a machine because the free wifi doesn't reach the garage where Uber picks up. We learned that the hard way.

After flying international, the last thing I want to do is take trains, even the Express. And most of the time I am flying up front like a true Surlyite

Uber is the way.

The last thing I want to do after flying international is sit in another seat for an hour.

I use Wheely when I’m in London or Paris vs. Uber.

Is this like Uber Black?

I ask, because I will be passing through London a bit this summer, but I am most certainly NOT a “discerning” traveler.

(Even though I would like to be.)

I have to get from Heathrow to Kings Cross station. I assume I can just get the tickets when I land? Any issues or confusing thing to worry about? I only have a two hour window to catch a train at Kings Cross to Edinburgh.

It is, but butter.  You call it all in advance.  There is a free hour of waiting included.  I use them for all my airport or train station pick ups and drop offs. It is around 100 GBP.  The cars I have had are all EQE or EQS Mercedes, so very nice, and that is just Business class.  They do, once you use them enough, have a membership offering (I think it takes 15 trips in a 6 month period) which allows you to do some additional things (SUV in London, Luxe in Paris, which are Maybachs).  Honestly, the price is great for the quality of the service.  A Black Cab from Heathrow is usually 100 quid, so...

However, I do take the Heathrow Express a bit too (thus the reason I am not a member on Wheely as sometimes the Express is the fastest way in or out).  If you do the Express, pay the 8 extra quid for business class.  Worth it to NOT be squished with the masses.

If you're by yourself you can take the express in, it's fine.  With the family, hire a car.

yup. fuck switching modes of transport with luggage and especially with multiple people.

If you have time it's better to book in advance.  Slightly cheaper and one less thing to worry about when you land.  There's an app that'll have everything on your phone so it's digital. Much more convenient.  If you don't book in advance you'll be fine buying at the airport but you never know if you'll be standing in line behind several families trying to figure out a system with English as their third language.

I agree with Heathrow Express not being bad at all, but I've only been there by myself. If I had the whole family and their luggage I'd probably hire a car.

If you have Apple Pay set up on your phone you can just wave it at the turnstile for the Heathrow Express or the tube. It's so easy. @Dbeasy

Thanks, everyone. We ended up just getting Uber, for slightly more than the train plus Uber from Paddington to Kensington would have cost.

It's a little tricky to find the Uber pick up point in terminal 3. You go up to level one parking from baggage claim, then take a different lift from there to level 3.  Then it's easy. One cool thing about the drive in is that we went right by the Fuller's brewery in Chiswick.

You can just take the new Elizabeth line from Heathrow to Paddington. No need to deal with the Heathrow Express.

If it were me, I'd do the Heathrow Express to Paddington - from there its an easy transfer to Kings Cross (Circle Line). Will take you half the time of a taxi. Buy your Heathrow Express tickets in advance and have it on your phone.

Recently put the fam on the Heathrow Express and subsequent Underground transfers to Green Park - our young kids navigated with their own luggage with ease. No reason to hire a taxi in London.
