if you are treefiddy nothing changes lol only for the pure freeloaders who are Legacy Members only

Tons of capitalist free-riders post in Business & Markets. Since they ought to understand your need to monetize the board for a bit of revenue, you should do the same there.

"pure freeloader" yet driving ad revenue...

Confused Rooster Teeth GIF by Achievement Hunter

It also costs money to keep the lights on. In many ways Immamac is actually hosting a fucking free soup kitchen. Sorry once a month you poors have to watch some dipshit human directional spin his billboard for H&R Block in your field of vision while you wait in line for a handout.

Welp, then Surly doesn't have a very good business model.  If it can't sustain itself, then shut it down.

I don't mind watching the ads, but don't insinuate that I'm a freeloader if the site is making money on the ads sold based on all pageviews.

However, if Surly is losing money because of us non-Treefiddy members, then it should go to a completely private, member funded website model.

It can sustain itself, with ad revenue. So why would he shut it down? Particularly if you don't mind watching the ads?

If he could sustain the site solely on the people who pay subscriptions, he would. I've known immamac for awhile, he is passionate AF about this place, and spends a fuck ton of his own coin and time keeping it alive. I won't speak for him, but going private and sustaining solely on those who pay would diminish the thoughts and posts we get on the website, at least in his mind, I'd wager.

Also, the guy was making a pretty flippant joke. For a long time surlygoer, you're being a bit sensitive about it, imo.

Burnt Ends is the unprofitable part of this. I make up the shortfall and there's a lot of shortfall this year and last year. We haven't been fully funded the past 2 seasons, but I kept it going because I thought it was important. Burnt ends actually costs nearly as much per month to me as keeping the site running costs, maybe more I haven't run the numbers, but sub numbers are not great and I think in general people are a bit disenfranchised by NIL instead of intrigued by it. That's to say there aren't NET NEW people interested in paying NIL players, it's on a diminishing curve industry wide, and the money is coming from revshare which turns general interest into NIL dollars mechanically inside of the AD rather than intentionally outside the program.

I'm actually rethinking Burnt Ends in its entirety at this point, because I'm not sure it makes much sense in a post revenue sharing world, surly can get a lot more value for the money we spend on NIL than what we are getting from Burnt Ends right now (which is effectively zero). I'm thinking a pivot to a more merch based revenue setup makes a lot more sense, and then it can be a revshare model instead of a pure donation/subscription model for content that it is now.

The deals I did with Jonathon Brooks are far and away the most effective things I've ever done to draw site traffic. They were also the most fun. Trolling the entire country on transfer portal day in 2023 was top tier.
