Gary Johnson has decided to run for the Senate in New Mexico, where he was formerly Governor. Poll results from after he joined the race show Johnson in 2nd place behind the Democrat, with the Republic in third, double digit percentage points behind. He's also ahead of the Republican candidate among Republicans 27% - 25%

Rand Paul also recently endorsed Gary over his fellow GOP'er Mark Rich.

In a surprising move that could have dramatic impact on third-party politics and Capitol Hill's balance of power, Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) today endorsed Libertarian Gary Johnson for the U.S. Senate over Republican nominee Mick Rich.

"Gary Johnson is a true fiscal conservative," Paul said in his endorsement statement. "As Governor, he reduced the size of government while improving services. He cut taxes, and he set what may be a record by vetoing more than 700 unnecessary pieces of legislation.

"His leadership on issues of government overreach, protecting Americans' Fourth Amendment rights against mass surveillance, and common sense foreign policy is sorely needed in the United States Senate, for New Mexico and the nation.

"He will be an important ally and a critical independent voice."

In what looks to be a very closely balanced Senate, he could frequently be the deciding vote.

Gary Johnson is handing that race to the Democrat.

So, thanks.

I think you mean Mick Rich is handing the race to the Democrat. Johnson has been closer to Rich than Rich has been to the Heinrich since before Johnson even entered the race. It's been rated a Safe/Solid Dem seat by every polling service.

Sadly, I think Gary Johnson, Trump, and Jill Stein in 2016 did unspeakable damage to any pure libertarian 3rd party movement.

Gary Johnson was the best candidate the libertarians could put up and he was either unqualified or grossly under qualified.

Trump proved you didn’t need a cool 3rd party to be successful in politics and keep your radical ideology.  All you need to do is subvert one of the existing parties to conform with your ideology...Trumpism 101.

Jill Stein proved to be a useful idiot of the Kremlin and gathered enough votes in a few key states to ensure a real Putin puppet victory.  Not a good look for 3rd parties going forward.

That gnarly old gnome from Dallas screwed it for 3rd parties 26 year ago.

Hillary & The Donald have screwed both their parties, which is not a bad thing MO. Too bad the Left & the Right refuse to wake up and shitcan their establishment furniture though.

100% agreed. However, the dems are showing signs of life what with recent developments in the Florida gubernatorial race. Truly, they just need leaders that are willing to accept that their time in charge has come to an end. Pelosi et al need to let a new generation hold the reins. As for the GOP, I don't even know if they'll survive this or if they'll go the way of the whigs.

I think you’re letting Obama off the hook with the democrats.  After his victory he let the DNC go broke and lost 1000 seats nationwide in state legislatures.

Hillary actually did more than she will ever get credit.  She kept party on the tracks and didn’t venture too far off to the left through demagoguery and cheap populism.
