Starting this thread because I have a feeling it's going to be a smash hit. It's only the most popular game (behind Tetris?) ever. And most of our kids and grandkids had a spell where they played this game like crack addicts for a few years. And Jack Black is hilarious and looking to bring the same King Koopa energy to this one. My estimate is this does numbers and will have everyone forgetting about the fabricated Snow White controversies:

I'll end up seeing this at the theatre I'm sure. Opens 4/4, though I saw some theatres are doing 4/3.

My middle-schooler and his friends who play Minecraft for what seems like 15-20 hours a week all claim to hate the movie because of inaccuracies they noticed or it demeans Minecraft players or whatever.

I didn't think about that. Purists hating it because it will be a caricature of what the serious Minecrafter will consider.

I thought it would be a fun movie to see with my kids.  But my 15-year old refuses to see it.  He says it "looks like what a GenXer thinks Gen Z ought to think is cool."

Ouch, man.

My 5th grade daughter says we're seeing this opening weekend no matter what.

Personally, I'm holding out for the Roblox movie.

If there was ever going to be a $1B opening weekend, they should make a Dress to Impress movie.  Every girl age 6-13 will be there along with every gay guy and basement dwelling incel.

Bluey movie is a year or two off.  It’s going to be massive.

Reports from early viewings seem to be a mix of pleasant surprise and good. Which I guess shouldn't be surprising given how many YouTubers consulted on this film. Lots of Easter Eggs and fan service. Speaking of, I hear one is very thoughtful

Spoiler

Technoblade reference, IYKYK

I know it’s his thing but Jack Black is venturing into alarmingly overweight territory. I’ve been a big fan since the dawn of Tenacious D and I hope he takes care of himself.

So, I said my daughter was going to make me go. Five minutes ago, I went to buy tickets, and the 12:30 show was already half full. I go to different sites to see if I can get a discount... by the time I've chosen a site I like, only 1/5th of the seats were left. Then my daughter suddenly decides to go see if a neighbor's kid can go with us... as soon as I go back to see where there is are 3 seats together, the entire showing was sold out.

It might be a good movie. It might be a bad movie. 🤷

What it is... is a fucking money making machine. It's gonna make a hojillion brazilian gazillion dollarydoos

Minecraft Movie is incredibly stupid and silly and cringe.

And it knows it. And it leans into it. The adult performances are completely over-the-top.

There is a Technoblade reference/tribute.

10/10, will watch again

When will Momoa realize he can't do comedy?

This turned out to be a terrible take. He goes 1:1 with Jack Black and it's glorious.

I agree with the take from @Rimbo

Had the day off from work, so I went with my youngest, who is a so-so gamer and was a fan of MineCraft.  Plus, he's my "go to" for movies that are likely to be action/adventure with low expectations for acting, writing, etc.

The great part about Jack Black - he does not really take himself seriously, while appearing to do so.  Momoa was also quite good.  He actually pulls of the comedy side quite well.

it was a great experience for us.  We both laughed out loud at things together; chuckled at things; said "WTH" at the same things.  It was entertainment.  And it was fun.

I was not expecting any academy award performances, etc.  It was a different form of art and it was worth my the $20 I spent for tickets.

My only complaint surrounded Jennifer Coolidge's role in the movie.  She's basically played the banal blonde female in every movie since American Pie.  She does the same here, but it is discontinuous.  I like her as an actress and in her normal role, but it seemed forced.  That said, who carees?

I, too, will watch again.

It was outside the plot. But it was hilarious; I think she finally felt free to go too far with the character, and boy, did she ever.

Also, I saw one review that went as far as to say that Momoa carried the movie. I think that gives the others' performances too little credit (maybe because we've seen Coolidge and Black do this all before) but I thought he was fantastic.

On the one hand, you can tell that they're all playing these roles straight, which is what this needs. On the other hand, you can also tell they're really having to work to keep from breaking/cracking up.

I bet being on this set was a blast. They were having a good time, and that joy breaks through the fourth wall.

I think it will do decent to good numbers and be profitable. Nice palate cleanser from Snow White.

So we went and saw it, and while my middle-schooler who plays Minecraft like crazy had reservations from the first trailer, he absolutely loved the movie. Naming the kid Henry was brilliant, I think my kid knows about half-a-dozen Henrys in middle school.  It’s like the Chris or Michael or Jason from my childhood.

I don’t know if Momoa carried it, but he had the biggest character arc and he was great

If you didn’t have an 8-13 year old boy in your life during the technoblade death, it’s hard to explain.

But if you don't, here's one explanation.

It's pretty fun. I don't understand Minecraft at all, but the movie actually gave me some insight into what it's all about.  The movie is super ridiculous and dumb, but it works. The pacing seems geared towards YouTube/tiktok crowd/high adults.

And I love silly self-deprecating Mamoa.

I chuckled when she acted as though hitting people with her JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE was a regular occurrence.

Her character's entire opening scene. "I'm an open book." [Proceeds to prove it with TMI, much to main character kid's confusion]

Seeing it again today my one observation is that the theatre has been a nerdfest. Bunch of nerdy old dudes like me and nerdy preteens, kids and grandkids. Theatre is overrun with nerds unseen since when MCU was fresh.

Just saw it. Post credit scene with Alex had my eldest planning to see the sequels already.

Funny, when I saw the Technoblade reference, I saw my kids face stretch and contort with a huge smile and knew my kids were happy and all I thought about was TB’s father in that moment.

Very well done. Good pacing, acting, humor, silliness, looked like everyone probably had a blast making it.

We missed that one, because my daughter had to go pee.

Saw the first post-credit scene only before she insisted we go.

I had no idea what was going on.  Every dorky teenage boy, including my 2 sons, cheered and screamed through the whole movie.  At first I was all, WTF?  Then, I was all - me seeing Return of the Jedi on opening night.  So many Napoleon Dynamite references because it's the same director.

My two boys loved it. My 9yr old is all about Minecraft right now so he's been amped to see it. My 13 yr old laughed at all the scenes that have been meme'd over the last few weeks. He also caught a bit of the adult inuendo. He also almost choked on some popcorn when 'General Chungus' was introduced.

and lol at Matt Berry as the villager. hope they go back to that in the sequel
