I had no idea what was going on.  Every dorky teenage boy, including my 2 sons, cheered and screamed through the whole movie.  At first I was all, WTF?  Then, I was all - me seeing Return of the Jedi on opening night.  So many Napoleon Dynamite references because it's the same director.

I’ve read it described as Rocky Horror Picture show for teen nerd boys.

Still boggles the mind that analysts didn’t realize the power of Minecraft, YouTube and boys and how that would translate to a smash hit.

Probably thought the game was too old and that people would be more willing to move on to GTA or something.   I predict the studios will look to make Roblox or Skyrim/GTA into a movie, rush it out, and make it incredibly shitty/not fun and then declare the genre dead.

Minecraft is still insanely popular right now.  I remember blowing it off when it came out many years ago, but here we are in 2025 and my middle schooler and his friends are running their own servers, spending birthday money on Hypixel, playing after school with each other, etc. and then there are all of the Lego arts, the other toys etc.

My middle-schooler and his friends who play Minecraft for what seems like 15-20 hours a week all claim to hate the movie because of inaccuracies they noticed or it demeans Minecraft players or whatever.

I didn't think about that. Purists hating it because it will be a caricature of what the serious Minecrafter will consider.

So it seems like the first teaser or whatever really tweaked some of the purist types, but the last trailer or two won them over, plus word of mouth from the YouTubers who saw sneak previews and who were actually in it.

And they are going to be pissed if there’s not a sequel because the last scene with Steve meeting Alex got them going.

Just watched with a passel of 7th grade boys.  Multiple spontaneous applauses and what not.  Definitely a hit for them.

They made it into a social event or 10 decide to get together on a Sunday for it.

Pretty impressive as far as a bunch of kids with zero executive function.

I don’t know of any movie recently where kids are asking to go with their friends like the Minecraft movie. Dogman, a few.  But nothing else in years.

I thought it would be a fun movie to see with my kids.  But my 15-year old refuses to see it.  He says it "looks like what a GenXer thinks Gen Z ought to think is cool."

Ouch, man.

Does your 15 year old still think that? Seems like he would be the only 15 year old to not see it this weekend.

They already made a GTA movie it starred Ryan Reynolds

Went with my two sons, 7 and 16 on Saturday. They loved it. I guess a lot of memes have come from it already. I have to say I was really entertained. Jack Black and Momoa are very funny in it.

I hope it makes a billion dollars. Then WB will fund Heat 2. 1 for you, 1 for me. It's also great for the cinema industry because it shows the communal experience is still worthwhile and enjoyable.

That's an accurate single sentence description of it.

I asked the young ones for an honest opinion when I picked them up and I think they summed it up best, "as a movie, like if I were to watch it alone, it's like a 5 or 6 at best. But watching it with friends (and I assume he meant engaging with it, laughing at it, the experience) it's a 10"

General public seems to be digging it so far.

Sometimes there are movies that are highly entertaining that the critics just don't get.

And sometimes it's the reverse.

Yep.  Pretty sure I've posted this before, but here's my personal cheat sheet:

high critic score, high audience score: must see

low critic, low audience: easy pass

low critic, high audience: likely a pretty solid comedy, should see

high critic, low audience: probably a best picture nominee, pass

It was good. Kid movies are very solid nowadays. Sonic 3 was strong. Less adult humor in Dog Man, but still watchable.

That's actually pretty on the money.

The last one is the best...because it's so on point. Like Anora.  Good movie Was NOT great by any mean IMO.  But won Best Picture.  I probably would never watch again unless i wanted to see her ass and tits again.

Sonic 3 was a the rare Good 3rd movie in a trilogy IMO

It's typically movies that you are meant to check your brain at the door.  Often kids movies.  Yes Pixar has shown us that an adult can be emotionally engaged in a children's movie as well, but not everything is meant to hit that bar.

My 7 year old wants to see it so I'll take him. Sounds like there is some stuff that a grownup that knows nothing about the game can find some entertainment in so that's promising.

The $163 million opening weekend of A Minecraft Movie is a huge success story and one that Hollywood's sorely needed in recent months.

It's a bigger opening than Barbie, which went on to become the highest-grossing film in Warner Bros. history, and bigger than Inside Out 2, which was the highest-grossing film of 2024 with $1.7 billion at the global box office.

Critics see a LOT of movies. For their job, they have to see nearly all of them.

As a result, they tend to award originality and films that defy expectations more than the general public do.

ALL THAT SAID... having read a few of the reviews, most didn't get it, including the ones who liked it.

The absolute god tier rulers of this were old Bugs Bunny cartoons and Sesame Street.

Holy shit, Sesame Street, man. The kids miss all the best jokes.

If you like watching Jack Black goof off, you're going to like it.

I just got back from a 4DX showing. That movie was GREAT to watch. Loved the back and forth with Jack Black and Momoa. If you are able to and have one nearby, go to Regal and watch it in that format. Just remember to sit your drink on the floor or it might make a mess with all the moving and shaking going on with the seat. 4DX is going to be the best way to see Minecraft, by far. I am going to try to go back next week. It is a movie that just makes you feel good and it was really well done.

Just got back. Took my 10 year old.  I enjoyed it, but really got a kick out of all the kids and teenagers screaming, clapping, and singing.  I normally hate any talking by the audience, but there is just no way to not expect it in this one.  The sheer joy on my kids face, and his all out clapping just made it a blast.

I did this with my son yesterday. I had no idea what 4DX was but figured it would be cool since tix were expensive. We had a blast.

$550 million now.   We may go again this weekend.

Saw it with my 4 and 6 year old. The 6 year old already asked if it "was on TV to watch" (streaming).

Went Sunday. We were there in time for the 330 but it was practically sold out so we waited for the 4. Had a great time. Also, my kids never watched Lilo and stitch, but we all want to see it after the preview.
