I don’t.  HEB when it’s open.  You can eat healthy shopping at wal mart.  But wherever you shop, it’s cheaper to buy real food and eat healthy than it is to by processed crap.  Water is cheaper than sugar drinks.  Rice and beans are cheap.  Chicken is cheap.  Frozen veggies are cheap.  A spaghetti squash is cheap.  Whatever fruits and veggies are in season are cheap.    You don’t have to buy organic out of season produce or grass fed filets to eat healthy.

There's a ton of communities categorized as "food deserts" because there is not good access to actual fresh food, or even decent frozen unprocessed stuff. You're right that it's not hard to eat healthy as long as you have a grocery story accessible to you. There's a significant number of people that do not have that luxury like you and I

On topic: my house has rather gone the other direction. We bought our next size up car seats a little early, I've upgraded the house's tech where it made sense, we've invested in a few nice things we've been putting off. But that's because we know things are about to be TON more expensive. Basically trying to take care of any maintenance and hedge bets to hopefully not need to replace anything for the next while

Will stick with my current paid off iPhone rather than upgrading after three years like I've done in the past.

That people have to finance a god damn cell phone is a sad testimony of our society.

I got serious about fitness as I am on the backside of my 40s and want my 50s and 60s to be as active as possible and still do the stuff I love (certain types of hunting, wade fishing, hiking, snow skiing, etc.).  So I quit drinking a few years ago.  And now I meal prep lunches exclusively.  Eating healthier has never been cheaper.  People who claim eating healthy is expensive are full of shit. I make a protein shake for breakfast and pre-workout in blender.  Meal prepped lunch (usually wild game and veggies).  Protein shake for snack.  Normal dinner.

Quitting drinking saves a ton.  Now instead of getting pre-dinner cocktails and then splitting a bottle of wine and often two, my wife will just order her a glass.  We often just split a salad or app and entree also. Restaurant portions are huge. Also no need to uber any more since I am all time DD.  Nights out are much, much cheaper.

Meal prepping lunches instead of eating out or just grabbing a sandwich, drinks and chips saves a minimum of $50 a week.

I need to do all of this just because.

They should have probably gone for the used offer.

I'll never understand the $1K+ phones. I buy a new Pixel every 2-3 years for like $250 and it's perfect. Looking forward to $3K iPhones made in America though.

I have an iPhone 8, but I may need to upgrade because I can’t update to the software version needed to run a lot of my apps. But I won’t buy the latest version because fuck AI.

IMO past the iPhone 12 there's not a significant leap generation over generation, just incremental improvements. I would recommend going for a 15 at least though, having a USB-C port is a major upgrade over lightning both for charging and for data transfer

We decided yesterday (before seeing this thread) to go the rest of the month with no fast food and no eating out. Partly for the money, but also because we're both and an age where we really need to lose some weight and exercise more often.

One caveat is that we will spend more on groceries to get what we really want to eat.

On a side note, one of the best investments I've made is buying a deep freezer and a vacuum sealer. When I see something like chicken or ground beef go on sale, I'm buying like 50 lbs of it and freezing them in two pound bags

Seems like I see pork shoulder and chuck roast go on sale about once every 6 weeks or so.

Also, the discount bin at Tom Thumb and Kroger in the meat department. I won't buy fish, chicken, or ground beef. But I've picked up a few rib eyes and flank steaks for like half price. You just need to eat them that day or freeze them as soon as you get home.

Penny wise and pound foolish, the lot of you.

I'm taking this opportunity to sell my wife, kids, pets, the house, the cars, and any depreciable assets lying around.  I'll then be grabbing a fly rod and tackle, a change of underwear, and a bottle or two of the good stuff and riding a Triumph Bonneville down Mexico way.   No half measures.

I mean… “have to” isn’t really accurate.   When an interest free payment plan is part of the contract, why not take advantage of it?

This and trade-in deals don't always work with buying the phone outright.

Yeah when I upgraded to my S24U, AT&T had an insane promo going where they'd give you $1000 for ANY Galaxy S phone trade in, so I bought an S3 on eBay for $50 and they took it! The only hitch was I had to take it via their zero rate financing. So my bill is $8 higher a month for 36 months, notbad at all

know your prices and shop the coupon book

Yep.  The 96 count container of Diced tomatoes looks like a good buy but when it's price per unit is 10-15% over HEBs you have to decide on volume versus storage/opportunity cost.

I was prepped or tonight's dinner of chicken wings ($4 for the pack on sale), baking potatoes and stuff for a salad but Texas is a 3rd world country where we can't keep the power on during a thunderstorm so that's not happening tonight.

I finally got a Costco membership, will see if that helps or hurts

I go every two or so weeks. Today the prices seemed to be higher than I remembered. Not everything there is a “deal”. I am a fan of their super unleaded prices which is why I go mostly.

Everyone talks about cutting out their television, but what do you all do if your world revolves around sports?

I'm not following games on gamecast on my phone.  Fuck that.  I can definitely cut back on eating out and ordering in, though.

Yep.  My mom had this in her "when we were young and poor" stash:

As I'm cleaning out their house, I hope to find it.  Seems it'll come in handy these days.

That's just good thinking.  Because when you look at the content that'll go for $5 or less, well, your price-per-pound is going to be FANTASTIC.

Split a cooked hot dog down the middle making two halves. Top with mashed potatoes. Top with cheese and bake until cheese is melted.

I was somewhat joking about Whole Foods. I prefer Sprouts over Whole Foods due to quality and prices. "Healthy" is a nebulous term. When it comes to nutrition I am not concerned about weight loss. For me and my family it's about performative nutrition.

While HEB is the primary shopping market, I shop at Spouts, whole foods, meat markets and a Co-op.

Regarding raw whole foods, that is a luxury of time and not everyone has that luxury. It's why I usually buy precut vegetables and fruits. Granted, I understand not everyone can afford the extra cost which is probably why many poors default to fast food. Poors don't have the time to prepare raw food so they default to quick and easy.

That's like the opposite of the point of this thread. So - congrats?

Consider yourself blessed that you buy the precut onions and bell peppers for 5 times the cost. I think preparing it myself is pretty zen and also tastes better.

YMMV.

I had to read that five times to make sure I was getting it right.  We don't shop at Sprout's anymore because their quality is so bad.  Pantry moths in their bulk grains.  Berries molding after two days.  Rot in the middle of broccoli.  Way too many times.

Which Sprouts? I shop at the one on Bulverde road and never had an issue.

You mean like precut?

Seems that you work so much and drive around from store to store for this and that you have plenty to spend.

Think. If you did not drive so much, you could cut your own shit and make a nice dinner.

Like @ztejas said. Cooking is my chill time. With baseball back I put a game on when I go into the kitchen and relax.

I cook 5-6 nights a week. I judge by the weather and what is in market. I plan based on that. Not some shit I saw on tv.

Fast food is for the lazy. Precut food is for the spoiled.

I do keep a frozen lasagna in the freezer as an emergency dinner.

Oh- and a lot of the listeria outbreaks and the sort come from "processed" fresh veggies. Jeez, you cannot take 60 seconds to cut up lettuce for your salad?

You live alone and cook for yourself and have the luxury of chill time.

I am still raising a teenager that is heavily involved in sports and extracurricular school activities but not old enough to drive. I'm always on the road.

Being a single parent is very time consuming. Which speaks to my earlier post. Sure, I can afford to take short cuts but there are a lot of people raising multiple kids on their own while working in manual labor jobs that can't.

I'd argue that for many families consistently eating "healthy" is a luxury due to the lack of spare time and resources.

I've decided to cut back on gas. I'll now go to the station mainly to look for good deals on hot dogs.

The Shell station near work advertised two hot dogs and a large fountain drink for $5.00.  I haven't dined there yet but have considered it.
