No safe way to move the explosives or device to a more remote place instead of destroying half the house?

TATP, much like Picric Acid, is highly volatile, as well as light and shock sensitive. The friction of opening the lid of the product is enough to cause detonation. So, yes, there was no other way to render the situation safe.

They'll wear a white glove while they shove a fist up his ass?

Since God created all of the elements that make up the various gases 6,000 years ago, it is my reluctant duty to inform you that the accident fact pattern makes you subject to the pre-existing condition exclusion.

True, but this is different than a corroded pipe, puncture, or something that occurs slowly over time. I was leaning more towards sloppy work, and directly preventable.

To be honest, how do you find out who to blame? An inspector, a sub, a nosey neighbor, the owner's kids? Anyone could have come in and turned the propane on at a burner, or the fireplace. Everyday I was building, when I got home from work, there would be at least two to three groups of neighbors walking through. Nothing harmful, they just wanted to see what people were doing with new construction.

There is no evidence left, but unfortunate for the GC/builder, it is still his baby. I would error on the side that someone left a valve on more than the builder being at fault, even after my incident.

It would have been awkward at Poker and Bunco later in the evening. Sorry about the bullet wound to the shoulder Rob. If it makes you feel better it was only an FMJ, I wouldn't use hollow points on my friends.

I’m scratching my head trying to think of explosions outside of volcanic activity that aren’t completely preventable.

Well,  you were in the business, right?  Who bears ultimate responsiblity from a liability perspective?

Keep in mind that news reports have already said the final inspect was complete and a certificate of occupancy had been issued.  (News reports can be wrong.)

"From a liability perspective" is an unknown.  For example, if the Contractor finds out that one of his subs F'd up the hookup, the most negligent party would be that sub.  If a shitheel neighbor snuck in and turned the propane on because he's pissed at the new homeowner, the primary legal responsibility would fall on the shitheel neighbor.

But PRACTICALLY speaking, if the risk had not yet shifted, it's going to be on the Contractor and his insurance.  If they can figure out somewhere else to point the finger so maybe the cost load is shared, then they will.

I think the forensics will be tricky.  I'm confident that accident investigators are far more capable than the average Joe of sifting through rubble for clues, but man, that's some rubble.

As an SME, I assure you that your confidence is misplaced. What I am confident in is that I’m quite certain the investigators go back to the office, drink a shit ton of Rumplemintz, then start throwing darts at a board labeled with various causes and that’s how they come to their conclusion.

I love the prominent USAA sign out front.  "Look at us!  We're covering this!*"

* "We know the coverage will die down soon, and won't catch us trying to fuck TK over as the project goes forward."

Surly to TK: Remember, your property damage claim is ALSO a huge news story in a town that actually runs short of big stories from time to time.  If USAA starts to fuck you over, calling someone at KVUE and saying "hey, remember when that house blew up?  How about you do a follow up story on how our insurers are fucking us over?"

Yeah they basically sent out the A team and told me they knew they fucked up and would make it right…

What source is there that this was TATP? And fwiw that is way way more hazardous than picric acid.

Multiple news outlets mostly. I appreciate your input, but I am intimately familiar with both substances so you can educate someone else if you wish. I was merely attempting to equivocate the basic dangers of TATP to something the average shagster might better comprehend.

For the sake of clarity, is it safe to assume this arrest is related to the more recent one where the bomb squad detonated it and took down half a house, and not the (likely) propane mega explosion that took out a block including TKthunder2's place?

Correct.  The photo is the guy whose house the bomb squad detonated in South Austin.

If you haven’t dealt with them in the last two years on a claim, then the perspective is out of date. The number of complaints about them are skyrocketing, including from many many former employees who’ve left, disgusted. I think they will fix it, but it will take awhile.

Trust & Estate atty here.  I had to send a demand letter to the moneychangers at USAA before they would release the funds they were holding in multiple accounts of one of their deceased customers. I opened an estate for the decedent and represented the duly court appointed personal representative.  My client was trying to do as much as possible to save money on attorney’s fees. They were delaying and stalling him at every turn, claimed they could not release the funds (7 figures) unless he converted them into a special “USAA estate account.” They sent him a raft of forms to fill out and he went back. Nd forth with ever changing USAA account reps for eight or nine weeks without them sending him a nickel. They msigically were cooperative after I reminded them how the law works.  Wired the money to my client’s estate bank account within 24 hours.  Motherfuckers.

Their branching out into financial services seems to correlate, if not have caused, their downfall.

If I were defending the contractor, I’d argue that the door had clearly been tampered with. Somebody obviously broke in and tossed the door 300 yards away before turning on the gas and leaving
