Schloss said in the post-game Spenser had some pre-game soreness and they think he will be ok.

They took him out as a precaution.

That is good news.

Volantis is tall already and then has that super high release point. Ball comes from way up high and the hitters think it's gonna be in the zone and swing at a ball in the dirt. They don't have time to decide because it's too fast. It's a perfect pitch. Sometimes a good coach will tell them to watch for it, and then he just puts it in the zone. Great fucking style for a closer.

To be fair, nobody knew until that. He was looking at his fingers after he came out which made it seem like it was a blister or something.

In the sec you will be playing teams with a very Good Friday starter.  Everyone has at least one guy.

But Good Friday is only one day a year.

He absolutely uses his height to his advantage by staying tall and creating a higher angle of approach for the ball.   Many guys drop and drive and use their length to get that release point closer, but he has more of a levered approach to get tilt.

Yeah, we weren't ready.

Seriously. Max hurt. ARod hurt. Mendoza hurt. Spencer hurt. Galvan playing with like 12 broken bones that he won't tell the trainer about.

Volantis has that tilt that coaches talk about pitchers like him have.

This is what caused those nasty breaking pitches at batter's feet, they can't lay off of, especially with two strikes.

The best catchers are built different.
but … why aren’t quad pads a thing? Or are they?

What a great night of baseball! Temperature was perfect. The game was a legitimate battle until the end. We faced adversity. We got down early. Our starting pitcher got injured. We battled back, and won a close one against a top 10 team. This is what it’s all about. This team is fun to watch. If you haven’t been out to the Disch this season you need to get there. There were way too many empty seats for a top ten matchup.  This team might be special. Don’t miss your opportunity to see them live 🤘🏼

Perfectly said.

Ashamed to say i was in the “ If you haven’t been out to the Disch this season you need to get there” category until tonight.

took my 10 yo and snagged tickets right behind the Auburn dugout.

so much fun and such a well played game. Baseball really is enjoyable when you watch a team that consistently executes at a high level.

Even at only 10, my son could see it making a comment about how his 10U team needs to play more without mistakes likes the Longhorns instead of playing like Auburn (the inning the 3rd baseman botched the pop up and the next batter the SS botched a tailor-made double play ball).

edit: and had a feeling it was going to be a good night when we were walking to the game getting close to the softball field. I hear the PA announcer say “now batting Reese Atwood” and I tell my son, “here comes a home run”. Next pitch, we hear the crowd erupt, hear the PA announcer say “grand slam” and then “longhorns win 7-3” and realized we heard, but just missed seeing a walkoff grand slam.

Seems like Spencer has struggled the past couple starts, still good, just not his standard.  Whatever it is that's bothering him, I'm glad now, and not as we are rolling into the regionals. Same for a lot of these guys, we focus on the injuries,  but hopefully the timing means they are in better shape come win or go home.

It's pretty incredible what the team has been able to pull off considering the circumstances, but it will catch up to us late in the season if we don't get those guys healthy.

I'd almost settle for sitting them all for a week and tanking a series if that's what it takes to have them feeling good for Regionals/Supers/CWS.

We are deep at starting pitcher. Volantis, Grubbs or Bing could easily slide into weekend starting role. Really deep.

Speaking of tats.. I saw Chase Shugart pitched some relief for the Pirates today.

I’m shocked that he’s still pitching, especially at the major league level. Thanks for the heads up

Totally agree about getting out there tp see the team live. Been a special season so far.

As far as seats being empty, that's too true as too many people have bought their season tickets and are trying to catch the resell market and make dough. So irritating. I have had my current seats since pre-covid and I have yet to meet the people that have the seats next to me.

Last night's unsupervised daycare (eight 4-8 yr olds) was a season highlight.

The secondary ticket saleas is a total nightmare. Seatgeaks processing fees where more than the actually seats, TickPick cancelled my order a few hours after. We literally walked up and got two ticks in row 7 behind homeplate for $17. The resell is garbage.

Friday morning optimism:

This pitching staff fucks. This staff fucks. These players come up with hits and runs scored when it matters. It's wild that we have the injuries we have, not to mention a utility player who has appeared in 17 games, starting 6, hitting .107 with an OBP of .265, and this team is still beating highly-ranked teams. Oh, and by the way, we've tied our best season start since '04 (that year still stings, btw).

And Dylan Volantis, my Lord. That dude is an "Enter Sandman" savant.

Once we get healthy, this really could be banner seven. LFG!

Spoiler

I just loved this game. Our ace has to come out of the game in third inning. We bring in our mid reliever who totally shuts them down to get us to the 8th where Volantis totally shuts them down. We weren’t able to do much offensively but got key hits from Mendoza and Flores and then Kimble who definitely has the power but doesn’t hit many home runs is that guy with the game winner. To do this in a “Friday” game was just perfect.

Good point. Let’s let Schloss know we don’t want any injuries.

If Moffett gets hurt, who is our left handed side arm guy? We are thin there.

Same with Howard. If he goes down, in the post season, who do you sacrifice when up 15-0 in the 8th? We don’t have anyone.

I am a buyer on the secondary market and I don't get it.

Seatgeek tickets tonight below the concourse level are about $100-$140.  Tickets above that are $70-$100.  Uncovered seats down the line are $50-$80.
Ok great, demand is high, should be a packed house...

But ... last night I paid for reasonable tickets in the 100's, looking down the line, and there were four empty seats next to me the entire game.  I could see groups of 6-8 unoccupied seats all over the place.

Who is eating these tickets and why aren't they putting them on the resale market?

Auburn, yeah.  He might not have looked great against UK, but he only gave up 1 earned run in 4 2/3 innings, so he was effective.  (1 ER in 7 2/3 innings against UGA.)

I hope the extra day of rest gets him right before A&M.

They could push Spencer all the way back to Sunday if they wanted next week and keep Harrison and Riojas on schedule with the early series this week.

My gut feeling is they are going to be extremely cautious with this especially with our current record. Even if it is super minor, it may not be the worst idea to just completely skip him next weekend.
