Eric Metcalf. My first college game ever. Endzone seats.  gotdam the lateral agility of that mofo in live action.

My first game after coming to UT for grad school.  Texas vs Mizzou.  I was a Metcalf fan being a Missouri native and loving his dad Terry.  Eric busted off a 53 yard punt return, he was electric from the jump.

All of them, going back to the 360 forums, then HornFans, then Orangebloods, then Shaggy Bevo, and now this den of iniquity.

Listeater is probably my favorite message board moment, but there has been a shitload of entertainment over the years.

Tommie Harris?

A GA told me once that when Harris was visiting Texas and in Mack’s office, he was staring at Mack’s Aquarium.  Mack noticed he was distracted.   Mack asked him if everything was okay.  Harris response — “coach, your fish is smiling at me.”

the broadcast map that showed abc squiggling down into bandera with some random big 10 game was one of the ~5 best posts from the HF era.

also, i do miss tpe, and would love to know if he’s still as passionate about UT Hoops as he once was, and what he thinks about sean miller. he really was a great contributor to the HF Hoops board.

Trying to quantify Tedy Lehmann’s speed

USC vs the greatest armies in history

The greatest day ever (cell phone flop-out, etc.)

I’m stunned, I’m pissed, it’s Mack Brown

I know it was later, but the April and Billy saga (with a Louie Anderson cameo) was must-read message board material. Trying to figure out what happened to them is how I stumbled across shaggy in its nascent days.

Boy, there's a worthless cocksucker. He was one of the first. Just a shill through and through. I can't believe I gave him money to read his drivel. But even if the heroin is low grade, cut with a lot of bleach, an addict has to have his fix.

How about Suzanne Halliburton's fabulous 55? I had a terrible conversation with her one time as she was trying to share her bonafides regarding covering recruiting, and I told her she didn't know shit about football, didn't even like watching the game, and all of her writings depended on citing someone else who knew something, which made her entirely dependent on whoever she was talking to for her opinion. Which went over like a lead balloon.

But at one point in time the Dallas Morning News and the Fab 55 were important lists in terms of covering recruiting in Texas. Thankful those days are over.

How about Wheeler promising a bus for a road trip then heading off with the money?

Wheeler was something else. He threatened a friend of mine on GoBig12 by posting directions to his house and insinuating that his wife being home alone wasn't completely safe. That's the first and only time I ever saw anyone get banned from GoBig12, which was famous for having a couple of interns run the board as a side gig that their job performance wasn't even measured on. Cox Communications had no idea what to do with a message board or how to monetize it.

He then was at a tailgate with Katy Agnor, found out she had some skills in web development, and convinced her to partner up with him to start a new message board, which became HornFans. Similar to TexAgs, the exodus came from people who started with GoBig12. You could even argue Orangebloods came from there in a roundabout way, since Ketchum first started posting on there while interning at KEYE in Austin covering local high school sports, which he convinced staff there to include recruiting coverage.

At some point the Agnors figured out Wheeler was unhinged, so they agreed to buy him out. He started his own message board, which is where the kerfuffle with the phantom bus trip occurred. He disappeared after that as far as I know. Not curious what happened to him. Then the Agnors went to a benefit dinner with Mack Brown, and he convinced them Hornfans should be a safe place for the players and their families, which led to a huge uptick in subscriptions for Orangebloods, and eventually led to the creation of Surly.

Wheeler was crazy and did other bus trips too.

The only one I ever did was Texas a football game in Waco against Baylor. When we got to the stadium and got off the bus. We gathered around him to get our tickets for the game. He pulled out a bunch of tickets and I got mine, but he didn't have enough for everybody on the bus.

There was quite an argument going on when I went inside the stadium. I don't know what finally happened. I didn't want anything to do with him anymore and caught a ride home with some friends that were at the game back to Austin. It was the last time I ever saw him. All I remember was him standing there arguing with the people that didn't get their tickets and wearing that old cowboy hat he always wore.

How dare you question the integrity of Max and the quality of the information he would provide on recruits.

Who else would tell you who was the the fifth best left handed pulling guard who was perfect for an option based offense?

Max on the radio was comedy gold.

see, the folks who went to the games that were broadcast on Raycom and TNT really missed out on being face-raped, and then watching some dude who played Running Back named Henry Shelton.

Who can forget the Liucci 44? Where else could you find a list of the top 35 Texas A&M targets and a handful of players they weren’t recruiting?

I always liked it when Bob would receive, and then promptly share, correspondence with the outraged randoms demanding their shit come off blast on the shag.

Thanks for posting that.  He had unnatural lateral quickness.  It always cracked me up when he would seemingly disappear behind  his line and then burst free out of nowhere, and then he'd run downfield with crazy dangerous ball "protection".  He was just so damn fast it didn't hardly matter.

There was a Spider Johnson on the men’s freshman basketball team back around 1969.

Pretty sure Larry Robinson was also on that team.

That freshman team was better than the varsity that season and way more entertaining.

Then, there is... Tyrone Branyan ...

When you hear the name Tyrone most people picture someone looking like this ... (no racist) ...

But, Tyrone Branyan... that magnificent bastard ... was this ... (again, no racist)...

I started that thread on Hornfans as a response to the media fellating USC leading up to the title game.  Chris Fowler actually referenced the thread during a pregame show.

Nothing like those soft and sultry music ballads to highlight the raw athleticism.

The dark side...

When that guy and his girlfriend went missing and a shaggy search began. Then they were found having driven drunk over the end of a bridge into a river or something similar.

That was a really weird Internet moment

The Fitlove/Rome Rose saga was epic and got us through an entire offseason of Charlie Strong

Daniel Figurelli is the first time I have been scared of Shaggy/Surly. When a dude literally changed his name to try and get away.
