To go with the good Texas food thread…

what do you hate in Texas foods, traditions, joints whatever

starters:

congealed salads.  I can tell you some horror stories from the 60’s

dickeys bbq.  You’ll find better in North Dakota.

blue bell.   Listeria factory with indifferent management.  HFCS and air.

Lone Star beer.  Not good. Never was good.  Pearl was much better.

gulf oysters.  Grown in sewage. Nope.  I eat only cold water oysters.

hot Dr Pepper.  My grandmother made this in the winter.  Poured a bottle in a saucepan, warmed it, pour into a coffee cup topped with a lemon slice.  Like a mix of paint thinner and and lemon pledge.

I love Lone Star.

Sadly, the cap puzzles were discontinued....for now anyways.

Sounds like someone got offended that an image of a noose was used in one of the puzzles (#71).  They pulled all the puzzles for review and a refresh.

Cold Lone Star beats the shit out of Miller and Bud.  It's not pretending to be anything other than a cheap beer, and I'll enjoy it with BBQ anytime.  And they have puzzles under the cap that get harder the longer you drink them.

And a six-pack of tall boys at HEB comes out to $1.33 a can.

when was the last time you had a lone star? the puzzles were briefly paused and then came back like 2 years ago.

Brisket is horrendously overrated. Burgers, steak, chicken, are all superior forms of meat

2nd on blue bell being terrible

Not sure if it’s a Texas thing or not, but chili is better with beans

Pecan pie and kolaches both fucking suck. Kolaches are 90% bread and 10% filling, can’t stand them

Whataburger is terrible, but it used to not be

So the first 2 points you highlighted could be argued as issues of taste/opinion I guess. The whataburger thing is pretty universally accepted as true though. I used to love whataburger, was my favorite chain by a lot. The past few years have seen a steep decline in quality, and that’s hardly a unique take from me. McDonald’s is better now.

Agree, overrated

Don't have a preference either way and also don't understand the hatred about it

Half wrong - pecan pie is awesome.  Kolaches are meh, I can take them or leave them

Not an unpopular opinion, most everyone here can agree on that. It still has its niche as "I'm buzzed or high and it's 1am and I want something to eat" food, but I sure ain't going out of my way for it

Brisket is only good when it’s really good.

There's something to be said for that.  Unlike pizza, which even when mediocre, is pretty good, mediocre brisket is meh.  Really good, tender brisket with a great bark is a thing of beauty.  Tough and/or underseasoned/undercooked brisket is definitely meh.  Growing up when mediocre chain bbq was the norm (think Luther's and such in Houston, or the various Mikeska's restaurants), brisket wasn't something I particularly craved.  Once I found it done RIGHT, though....yeah, it's glorious.

I can take or leave kolaches (that is, the sweet, fruit-filled etc.).  Klobasniky, though - again, done right, where the ratio of meat/filling to bread is right, are awesome.  But there is one variety that is worthless: boudin klobasnek.  Too doughy and starchy.  Even though I love both items, together, they just don't work.

And Blue Bell can get fucked.  HEB Creamy Creations is better both in taste and ingredients.

A lot of Texas's other food abominations are creatures of Texas being part of the south (jello salads and such) and also part of the midwest (go to far north Texas and the panhandle, and you might as well be in a kitchen in Nebraska, with NO seasoning or flavor).

This has to be the worst opinion ever posted on Shaggy/Surly.

It’s really not. McDonald’s has much better variety and better chicken products, plus I get better rewards with their app. Is a whataburger #1 better than a Big Mac? Probably, but I’d put the mcd’s quarter pounder or homestyle burger up against anything whataburger has.

FFS. At least one poster has agreed with every take I’ve had on here. They truly aren’t edgy or controversial, I didn’t come on here saying tacos suck or I hate all chicken. But god forbid I insult a food chain that the public almost unanimously agrees is terrible now

McDonald’s is not better than Whataburger and I’m not a huge Whataburger fan. Plus there’s so many preservatives in McDonald’s and its meat is so dry the food will look the same left on your counter way longer than most fast food.  To me the Whataburger decline is more in people’s heads because it sold out vs a huge decline. It still tastes the same to me and no matter what they throw on it with new creations it still tastes like Whataburger if that makes sense. Avoid both of those places with their prices now and just go to a local place to get a much better option if you have the time for the same price or close to it.

We've become friends with a fun group of former Mormons living in SLC. Hot Dr Pepper as a coffee substitute is apparently a Mormon thing. Weird AF.

I'm with you on gulf oysters unless they're fried up on a po-boy or I'm eating char-grilled oysters in NOLA. I've been known to consume gulf oysters raw but not usually by choice. Gimme the cold-water oysters all day long -- I'll eat as many as you give me.

I can only eat so much really, really terrific brisket because it's so rich and greasy. It's fantastic though and definitely sits up there with the best meats.

Blue Bell sucks shit through a straw and I will never willingly buy it again.

I prefer beans in chili as well and understand that's not Texas chili, nor do I claim it to be.

I don't really like pecans so therefore, I don't eat pecans. It's a consistency thing for me. I don't particularly like nuts in food but I like them by themselves as a snack (that's what she said). I'm an apple/key lime pie guy.

Whataburger has some of the worst service a fast food joint can have unless you're in a wealthy suburb. It's barely above Popeye's. McDonald's ain't got nothing on Whataburger, though.

Totino-s-Party-Pizza-Pepperoni-Frozen-Sn

Tell me that's not a box full of happiness right there.

Nobody older than 18 should ever be consuming Totino's "pizza." If I'm gonna waste calories on food that's bad for you, it ain't gonna be Totino's.

Whataburger beats the chain fast food burgers but that's it.  It clears the lowest bar as far as quality.  Brisket is great on a taste standpoint, but if you are bringing in time/price into the equation, yeah it's overrated.  If I'm not paying, it's awesome.  Grilled chicken thighs or leg quarters are the best bang for your $ meat choice.

I basically never eat at Whataburger anymore. Had too many bad experiences in a row.

I entertain McDonald's every once in awhile. Especially for breakfast. I don't know if their food is better than Whataburger but I also don't think it's the gulf that some of you are trying to present in here. It's rarely a fucking headache getting in and out of there and outside of chik fil a it's the fast-food model of consistency. Their app is very easy to use, also.

I don't think that's an especially crazy take from Helo.

Cool. McD’s still has better fries, nuggets, chicken sandwiches, and random items like the mcrib. I do think whataburger has them beat on the fish filets

I will say the air fryer/toaster oven has completely changed the game for kids food.  My kids will never understand how many soggy microwave corn dogs or hot pockets I ate as a kid to avoid grown up food.  Air fried dino nuggies will have me asking my wife if this was delivery.

I will entertain McD’s for breakfast. Denver has Good Times and the In-n-Out is fine, but the fries suck. Wendy’s has better burgers and their fries have improved so much

But I miss Whataburger spicy ketchup and their fries and HBCB

Jello salads, while an abomination in their whole form, do give kids the ability to eat the Jello around whatever is making up the "salad". I took a lot of pride as a child in being able to enjoy one successfully.

Sweet cornbread. I love cornbread .... without the sugar. That is all. At least for now.

My Dad had a low-intensity war going on with the cafeteria at Texas Instruments over sweetened cornbread.

Every now and then, the cook or chef would change, or they'd get the wrong stuff from Sysco or whatever and the cornbread would be sweet.

Dad would lodge his complaints first with the lunch ladies, who typically vehemently agreed with him.  And there were just enough southerners and Texans employed that there was a majority agin' sweet cornbread.
