Tom "the turtle" Herman [Lame Duck or greatest 5d chess player ever?]

Someone may have already made this point up thread and I missed it but I (like I suspect many on here are) have the double whammy of being both a Longhorns and a Cowboys fan and it occurs to me how similar this season is for each.  Cowboys were being discussed as a playoff contender at least and a potential Super Bowl team.  Likewise, for a couple of years now I have been hearing how 2020 was supposed to be "the year" for the Horns  with Sam as a senior and where we should win the conference (and certainly beat the most beatable Sooners team will will likely see for some time).  Yet here we are, not even at the end of October, and both teams' seasons have imploded.

Can somebody summarize the state of things? I know the product on the field is trash, the band isn't showing up, Coach Tom seems in over his head and a dick to boot, and apparently The Eyes isn't a source of pride for the program right now.

What else is going on?

Winning is hard

Practice is hard

Discipline is hard

Tackling is hard

Blocking is hard

Staying for  The Eyes is hard

Recruiting is hard.

The question becomes, is Quinn leaving because he knows Tom is gone?  Or is he leaving because he knows Tom is staying?

All of the "reasonable" talking heads said  Tom wouldnt get fired unless we started losing recruits.  Well, that time has come.  Whats going to be the new excuse?

As you know by now, 5-star QB commit, Quinn Ewers has decommitted from Texas. Before that, we saw Texas lose long time 2021 commit, Billy Bowman.

Up until now, 2021 5-star DE, Ja’Tavion Sanders, however, has remained solid to Texas.

In fact, I had heard, even recently, he really wasn’t even entertaining other schools.

I am now hearing that that has changed. I’m not ready to say there is an imminent decommitment but it’s looking like much more of a possibility.

I’m dead inside.

He watched Justin Fields destroy Nebraska in his first game back and watched us produce only 270 yards passing on a team that barely practiced the past 3 weeks.

A lot of misplaced anger in this thread.

No one should be mad at Herman. I'm not competent to be the CEO of a Fortune 500 company, but if someone offers me the job with a huge salary, and an incredible golden parachute, I'm taking the job.

The idiots who hired & retained Strong and Herman are the problem. CDC will hire another non-Power 5 coach who will fail. Don't blame that coach for taking the pay day. We all would  take it. Blame CDC.

After you got that job and were shitting the bed in legendary fashion would you keep blaming others, while bragging about being MENSA?  If so, I guess you're a fucking asshole.

Any chance Yurcich becomes interim head coach -- he's the highest paid assistant

  • Mike Yurcich, offensive coordinator, $1.7 million (three - through 2022 season)
  • Chris Ash, defensive coordinator, $800,000 (two - through 2021 season)

I actually guess it would be Drayton, likely to stay on staff with Urban, minimal game day responsibilities, technically the assistant head coach already and would allow Ash and Yurcich to solely focus on their responsibilities

Ash would take over. He was not a great HC at Rutgers but he at least has the experience. Yurcich needs to just focus on the offense.

I'm ready to shame the people who wanted him without any vetting or a real coaching search.

I don't think anyone wants him here, or those that do have quieted down.  But, if the bastard runs the table that will complicate things.

Urban will wait to respond until Herman hits absolute rock bottom and has no more blue chip recruits in the fold...

Then he’ll say no.

I could see him wanting recruits to scatter so that he can arrive with a bare cupboard and then load up on talent. He's not going to want to be seen as someone receiving help from Herman to build a recruiting class. Plus, he might not want some of the guys that Herman has recruited, but he absolutely wouldn't want any credit of any success to be given to Herman.

I hope that what I just wrote is true.

I’m not terribly worried if Ewers and Co commit to tOSU.  Herman is gone, Urban is on deck.  And Urban will pull some of his staff from tOSU, those guys have loyalty to him.  That gives us a chance to get them all back by signing day 2022.  And you’re crazy if you don’t think an Urban hire changes the recruiting landscape drastically and immediately, even in the 21 class.  Hell, Bowman is still out there uncommitted, playing the long game of wait and see.

If we lose a close one in Stillwater, Herman is done on Sunday.  If we get shellacked, he’s gone Saturday night.  CDC is a smart man, make no mistake about that.  He could not afford to be reactionary up until this point, because it’s sets a bad precedent for the future.  But now he wouldn’t be reactionary...recruits and their families are sending a clear message, not just fans.  When the team is officially eliminated from title game contention, this shitastic Herman era is over.

Regarding staff...Urbs keeps Yurcich and Drayton on offense, Ash, Vilai and Hutzler on defense.  He pulls the rest from tOSU, and hopefully leaves a spot to cherry-pick someone from the SMU staff since honestly they are locking down DFW right now.  Urban can’t be announced right away, but Yurcich and Ash can sure as shit get on the phone Sunday afternoon and start locking recruits in with the future of the program under an Urban Meyer regime.

I never said he was a bad coach but I consistently questioned the rush hire of Herman, his initial contract formulation, and his extension.  I’d estimate about a fourth of my neg rep (and I’m a poster with a lotta negative rep points), came from those posts.  I’d love to play the “told you so” game with some of the idiots on here.

also, Tom is a douchebag

Now that the national media is making us look seriously unstable it would be so jacked up to not get Urban. This program is toast!

Stop with the calm down BS.

CDC your inaction fucked us.

Tom Herman your selfishness and shitty character sealed our fate.

Ewers decommitting was on the Houston local news and on the fucking ticker at the bottom...they barely mention the dynamo and hell even the rockets dont exist sometimes to them but they are blasting this..

I hope he takes a look at Samples too.  I know his coaching resume is small, but the guy is putting some skins on the wall quickly.  And it’s clear he has the keys to the Metroplex in terms of recruiting.

Tom just is what he is, a mid-level coach whose ceiling is maybe a 10 win season and the Sugar Bowl. And he only got that because of Sam.

Eh. I think he got there because he still had some of Charlie's guys on the roster. Herman does more than Charlie did with the talent he has but I'm starting to think that he is actually worse at developing players. The defense and ST won as many games in 2018 as Sam did. Since those guys left - especially the 2018 seniors - we're 11-7 with Sam at the helm (7-6 in B12 play - 8-7 against P5) despite supposedly having "better" talent on the field.

Sam doesn't move the needle enough to overcome Herman's ineptitude and he never really has outside of a few shining moments (OU and Tech 2018 - osu, Kansas 2019 - kept LSU close in 2019 - Tech this year).

Seriously - look at all 21 of our wins since 2018. In only SIX wins did we beat a team while giving up 30 points. And in two of those wins we gave up 31 and 30 points respectively. Sam/Herman in that span are 6-9 when we give up 30 plus and 15-2 when we don't. That doesn't scream "transcendent - win-despite-the-noise QB"

And that's only 30 points - which is generally a good job by the defense in this conference. Bump the cutoff to 40 points and it looks even uglier.

Us: YES SIR!

Yeah, what does he want?

Money? Sure, here's money.
A helicopter to take you to and from work faster? Yeah fine here you go.
4 weeks of guaranteed, contact-free vacation? Yeah great it's in the contract.
Limited BMD obligations? No problem we'll hire someone to send gift baskets all you need to do is pre-sign a bunch of Thank You cards and pre-record some voice messages.
Want a personal pastor to follow you around talking about Jesus and family? No problem.
Regular consultations with the best health specialists in the world regarding your health? Gotcha, buddy.

Imagine if Vince had decommitted less than 90 days after committing. That pretty much just happened, on top of the other things you mentioned.

Oh, and a bunch of stud recruits we were after are going to osu now, probably related to the decommitment.

This.  I mean each of CDC's hires at Texas have been 'big swing' home run type hires.  It gives me hope that CDC can get an Urban hire done.  But even if he can't - Herman needs to be gone after the OSU game.

I expect to see a press release after the OSU game stating that Herman is gone and Ash (or another staff member) is interim for the remainder of the season.

Me, if I was a BMD: "Great idea! I LOVE a redemption story! I'll hire PR firm to start working with Zach now!"

Urban isn't a make-or-break hire. He's not a god. There will be new Urbans in the world of football coaching. Right now there's a young gunner who will be the next amazing builder and architect. So if he's just trolling us or stringing us along (no idea why he would hate UT itself, but whatever) then the most we have to lose is some BMD pride for getting played, and to me that's worth nothing.

Urban is a 90% chance to be a hit (10 win seasons on average, great recruiting classes, etc...)

Hiring a Luke Fickell is a 50% chance to be a hit.

That 40% is worth A LOT.

The amount of folks talking in absolutes are amazing.  Its like you haven't been around this program the last decade.

Texas will fire Herman Sunday if he loses

Texas will hire Urban

Ewers is a generational talent.

There are so many moving part to this shit show it boggles the mind

Nobody knows shit all about what will happen.

The only absolute is the fact that this program has been and is still a complete shitshow going on 10 years now.

I've had a text exchange with some friends who are die hard Texas fans over the last week and the feeling is pretty consistent. Either we get Meyer and we can find reason to stay engaged, or we don't and we're all out for a while.

This shit has not been fun for 10 years or so. It's too much time invested for something that never gives you any positive returns.

This was all before the Ewers news, so...

I’m there too.  I’m too far away for actually going to games to be worth the investment.  But now I truly don’t care to watch us trip over our dick every Saturday.  Just fucking done with this shit show.  I’ve been there with basketball for a few years now, and I used to watch every game.

CDC is now on the clock.  Do something or go down with the sinking ship.
