The $20,000 American-made electric pickup with no paint, no stereo, and no touchscreen

Would you care to elaborate?

I think the issue is battery life cycle.  A NMC battery will putter out after significantly fewer charges than a LFP battery.  It's a slightly higher performer, but will need to be replaced much sooner.

Serious question: what type do other EVs use?

It's a mix.

Tesla uses LFP for their shortrange model 3 and Y, and NMC for the longer range versions.  Rivian uses LFP.  Chevy Equinox and Blazer use NMC, Nissan Leaf has historically used NMC but is supposed to be switching to LFP in 2026, BMW i3 uses NMC.

And depth of discharge. And general safety. And it basically degrades like shit even after getting to 80%, it falls off a cliff, lithium keeps going for a while.

Yeah, LFP has significantly lower energy density. It isn't technically ideal for a vehicle where density matters. But it is cheaper and doesn't mind sitting at 100% charge. I'm not sure why anyone would be up in arms about NMC. It is a good, battery chemistry for vehicles. You just have to avoid having it sit at 100% charge for extended periods of time. That said, it is an odd match for a product marketed around its low price.

The Nissan leaf originally used LMO, switched to NMC in 2017 or so, and looks to be switching to LFP for costs reasons. Most of its early problems weren't battery chemistry issues, but lack of active thermal management.

After reading this whole thread for some reason, I’m putting down a deposit. I’ve been looking for a truck to haul trash, potting soil, recycling, etc and haven’t found anything I’m willing to pay for. I can pull trailers with my other vehicles so this is more about needing an open bed at the moment. I will also enjoy having another vehicle that it bothers my high falutin wife to ride around in assuming it makes it to production.

A beige truck? With those wheels?  I mean, putting a bumper sticker on there that says "PLEASE DO NOT HAVE SEX WITH ME" seems redundant, but if you wanna be super-sure, go for it.  :)

Now we are at 35k

Nice goal post shift there...

My entire point was responding to someone who said they were putting a deposit on one, why not.

My why not is for $5k more you can get a Ford Hybrid 2 wheel drive vs a start up EV 2 wheel drive. I personally think thats a much better investment that putting $20k or even $50 into a Series A funded vehicle backed by Jeff Bezos and other similar folks.

The likelihood of being able to find a shop or anyone to work on it is exponentially higher with the Ford. Plus you get fun and neat shit like a radio, AC, a color you like, unlimited range, and the ability to actually haul shit a long way.

I'm not shitting on Slate. I've said multiple times I'm all for any attempts to stop the vehicle cost/size race to stupidity. I would like to see it succeed. However, we've already discussed that this vehicle's market is extremely niche. Too niche IMO. So if someone want to throw $20k at one and hope it succeeds, deal with the negatives and take their chances that the company exists in 2026-7, I'm never going to stop them. However, if they pose the question of why not... On a message board... I'm going to reply with a logical alternative as to why not.

How is the space for the truck nuts?

Sadly, unlike the Raptor and F250s the 2025 model doesn't come with the truck nut option.

It's sad really.

However, you could by some 19" rims, small sidewall tires, underbody lights and a huge brush guard with nessecary lighting to really make it a capable truck.

@BurntEyes is having a blowout on Ford Mavericks! With prices this low, low, low you’d be insane not to buy one! C’mon down today before it’s too late!

Find a vehicle in the same price range with similar features and feel free to point it out. Seriously, I'd love to learn. There is a reason the Maverick demand out paced supply at inception. It perfectly fits a particular niche, alone.

The best reason to say fuck you to this thing is that it's a Bezosmobile

Yeah, it's, in at least some small part, an attempt by Bezo answer to the failure of the Cybershit and Emo, imo.

Virtually any modern truck would reduce my fuckability in my wife's eyes.  OTOH, if I rolled up in vintage 80s long bed F-150...

I don't believe that shit for a second. Ordering a camper top and some rear seats doesn't remove the rear window or the metal partition behind the front seats, it would have to be a completely different build for that to work.

A buddy has one of the4se for a company truck.  If he is going down the highway at 555 or more, I can not hear him on the phone.  It has really loud road and wind noise.

Well yeah, he's moving faster than a 747

Not my personal experience at all. My experience is admittedly limited driving a family vehicle but the sound on the receiving end was fine in the calls I made.

Have you ever actually ridden in one? The wind noise inside is near zero.

Was his window rolled down?

Does he have the same issue with everybody?

Bit of a logic leap to conclude the wind noise is terrible in a vehicle  based on a call with one friend is his work truck, but it that's Surly for you.

Edit - but in fairness I've never gone 555 mph in one. So... mileage may vary.
