Cool to live in a black and white world where the injured qb is either healthy or can’t throw. Some of us assumed he’d be experiencing some pain and how he can manage it is up in the air. Playing through pain in your throwing shoulder could obviously result in bad qb play and risk further injury on a short week.
I don’t have a crystal ball but suggesting Sam sits out against Kansas shouldn’t be eye roll inducing.

Agree with the first part, but you can’t “further injure” a bruise by throwing the ball. Running is a different story, but I’d be pretty confident he’ll avoid hits to that area.

I didn't see the MRI or examine the shoulder, but my guess is that the MRI showed a whole lot of nothing. If he were Joe Smith who fell in his back yard and sustained the same injury, there would have been no MRI. When you 'separate' the AC (even a grade 1), there is some contusion involved. Contusion means hurt by hitting without breaking. It is really a fancy medical term for a bruise or boo-boo. Inflammation is another really generic term. If someone has a swollen and painful shoulder, and the doctor tells you it is inflamed, he is basically translating your complaint into 'medicalese' and calling it a diagnosis. He was minimally sore and got hit right on it; now he is more sore. Time will help. If it were the NCG, I would "give him the shot" and have him play. It is Kansas-- I would see how he does. With less than a week to heal up, he has a chance, but the odds are not great that he will be pain-free enough to make throws without a significantly increased risk of INTs. The team doc has probably told Herman to make sure he has a third QB ready in case Shane gets hurt, because there is a good chance Shane starts.

Why not give him a shot, even if he doesn’t play? It takes a couple of days before relief anyways. Might as well take care of the pain now, and sit him if he is not needed.  You could speed up the process before the conference championship.  It’s just an option that might be an answer.  I’m not a doctor, but I have had inflammation in my left AC joint to the point that it hurt to pull the bed spread up at night.

The arthro mri that I had showed plenty of inflammation due to the bones rubbing, but I had no tear.  One shot helped tremendously, I stay very active and have supplemented with plenty of Omega-3 and glucosamine/chondroitin.  This was three years ago.  I’m not taking hits like Sam does, but I do much more than average with my daily excercise routine.

That sounds good in theory, but Kansas may be a team that is peaking. Last week they had 250 yards rushing. That's trouble in anybody's book. I have a hard time envisioning any team scoring forty plus points with Shane behind Center.

1. Who gives a shit if they are peaking. Peaking for them would have been 6-6. They are Kansas. They suck.

2. OU's run defense blows donkey cock. They almost lost to Army because of it.

3. If Shane puts up 30 or even 27 this is a win. We've been playing teams close this year but I don't think KU hates Texas enough for them to pull off an upset. The team Kansas beat 2 years ago was a train wreck. This is a good Texas team. I wouldn't be surprised if Kansas folds just like ISU did. They are outmatched at every position on the field.

Texas O-line needs to play well with 40+ running plays and 250+ yards rushing..... protect the ball and limit turnovers.... 🤘

Texas hasn't run for 250+ yards in any game this season. Doubtful it's going to happen against KU. The only time they cleared 200 was against Tulsa. They are averaging 149.7 against P5 competition.

For those who care - Kansas is giving up 181 rushing yards per game on 39 carries for an average 4.7 ypc against P5 competition.

Oklahoma (296) and Oklahoma St (256) are the only two offenses who went for over 200 on the ground against Kansas.

Sigh. If he’s healthy enough to play then he’ll play. We’re not “saving” our starting quarterback in an absolute must win game. If Sam doesn’t play it’s because he can’t throw.

I agree.  if he is 90-100% of what he was before kickoff against ISU he plays.  If he's only 70-80% he needs to sit until it looks like we need him. Shane's leash would be short.  my statement was based on the fact that I didn't think he'd be 90-100% considering night game on Sat and early 11AM game on Friday.  that is a pretty short week.

The practice reps at this point in the season for Sam should be inconsequential at this point in the season.

if we don't turn the ball over, miss a bunch of FG's, this is a 20 point win.  the whole playbook will be open for Kansas so I expect trick plays and stuff they haven't done all year to show up.  just play sound base defense.

We're one game from the CCG.  You start Sam if he's anywhere close to 100%.  And you call plays to limit the contact he takes.  Take the designed QB runs off the table and hammer it into his head that he has to get down or OOB if he's forced to scramble.

We should be able to run it down KU's throat.  But on the handful of 3rd and 4+ situations we'll inevitably see, we need Sam in there.

Agreed.  I keep seeing posts stating to save him for the CCG.  That is exactly what mean't by the phrase "looking past an opponent to the next game".   If we don't beat Kansas, there is no CCG.  One game at a time, and the next....most important game is Kansas.  If we go into that complacent because they are Kansas, or look beyond them to the CCG, we may be screwed.

TLDR:  We're too close to blow it/anything now.

We don't have a running game that we can lean on for 300 yards, but we have two 6'5" WRs that catch everything you throw to them.  Let LJ run about 5-6 wildcat formations where Sam would usually run.  If you think this Texas team will take this game lightly, you haven't been paying attention.

Sam wanted to go back in against ISU, you won't keep him out of this game if he can play.

That said, I'm guessing our defensive alignment is going to have a tough time stopping a good running team, which Kansas appears to have become. If they can combine an effective ground attack with some play-action long balls, we could be in for a long night. Sam should be playing by the second quarter. Nothing is going to come easy to this team for the rest of the season. But that's okay- that's how you become champions.

Night? Where, in Baghdad?

Disagree. If we're that much better than KU, as everyone seems to think, you let Sam rest, even if he's capable of starting. Don't take the QB option off the table - let Shane run it. The moment it appears we are in any kind of a close game, then you insert Sam.

And as I mentioned in my  previous post, by starting Shane, you've just given Sam a little extra reminder not to lower his head when he see the safety coming.

i wood:

- get a wilcat with heard. practice the shit out of it. both big WRs out spread wide for it. two runs and two passes. use this to change up the game, especially when shane struggles

- give shane the start. run more ZR. tell shane he keeps 3 or 4 times max when we need like 3 or 4 yards for a first. he can run, just don't call QB leads.

- more WR screens.

- more RB screens

- and for the love of god teach shane to throw the back shoulder deep ball and not just the fade.

if we are tied or losing at half, toss in Sam second half.

on defense stop the run and shit.

Texas ran for 179 yards vs Iowa State.  The Kansas rush defense just got the crap beat out of them by BlowU giving up 322 rushing yards.  That same KU defense will be banged up and worn out Friday morning when they play the Horns....

I'm calling my shot...... TEXAS will rush for 250+ yards on Kansas this Friday...... 🤘

OU was at home, and they have a significantly better running game than we do. Sam has to play for our running game to be good enough to lean on in this game.

OU had Kennedy Brooks and nothing else.  Their other scholarship running backs were hurt.  Keontay and Tre are better than Kennedy Brooks.  OU only rushed well because of Kyler Murray.   I agree that Sam needs to play, but Brooks is not an upgrade over either of our backs.

The threat of Kyler running AND throwing is significantly greater than anything we have. Brooks is fast enough to make defenders pay for not reacting quickly enough too. Their OL is better at run blocking than ours as well.

Defenses can't commit too much to the run or they risk getting gashed by the passing game.

We have a very methodical and efficient running attack. It's good, but I'd be shocked to see us go for 200.

The shot I would use on game day would be lidocaine and naropin. It would start working in less than 2 minutes. It would last for hours, maybe a day. The shot that takes a couple of days to kick in but lasts for months is a steroid. Steroids help inflammation a lot. Lidocaine and naropin deaden nerves for 100% relief. Your shoulder sounds like ACJ arthrosis, not acute injury. Different animal. It’s what Sam will have later in life.

Steroid=cortisone?

Ideally I would like for Sam to rest for KU. But after he went down in the Baylor game, Shane played, we had the bye week, and then we lost to OSU. I don’t want want this team to get out of rhythm going into the CCG if Sam can play and avoid unnecessary hits.

Offense had nothing to do with those two losses, IMO.

The spread is -15 for a reason, folks.

Because Sam is expected to play, that’s why.

The point spread isn't designed to be a true representation of how much better one team is than another. It is designed to attract an equal amount of money on both teams so that the sportsbooks are guaranteed a profit.

Thank you I think most of us understand how point spreads work.
