That was some pretty bad coaching malpractice by Beard. Just don't start jacking 3s and defend the 3 on the other end, easy win. I haven't watched Ole Miss much but I see why they're 11-15. That was an awful finish.

Good coach but it's now 7 years since he's advanced past the Sweet 16 as a coach. During those 7 years he's gone 18-13, 18-11, 22-12, 7-1 (fired), 20-12, 24-12, and 11-15. He's not some messiah level coach like some think he is.

I'm not sure the portal is advantageous for somebody like Beard. He's obviously not a dumbass like Shaka and realizes he has to utilize it but to me he's a coach that's better when he can have guys in his system 2 to 4 years. That doesn't happen anymore with the portal.

Not a single person has argued this. Almost everyone seems to agree Beard is a good coach they don't think he's the level you think he is.

i’ve had this thought and i agree. i don’t think it helps him as much as it does other coaches, especially at a shit hole program like ole miss.

my take on beard isn’t particularly controversial, and i’ve posted it all here very recently:

1)he was a tier 1 coach at TTU and Texas

2)he’s probably still a top 6-15 ish coach nationally, but

3)there’s no way to know as long as he’s at ole miss

it sure feels like you’re characterizing my feelings on him as something much more bombastic than that ^^^.

Yeah it's like claiming Deshaun Watson wasn't a top 3-5 QB in the league before the massage scandal shit. Sometimes guys get derailed and their career's never recover. Beard obviously would have taken that Texas team past the SS. Terry had to get unlucky to not get them to the FF.

Almost every college coach I've seen talk about offense vs defense, seems to imply defense is the harder end to teach. My opinion is that the portal is more advantageous to offensive minded coaches (i.e. Miller). Beard has even said it takes a couple years to fully grasp his defensive system for college-aged players.

It was a very winnable game for Beard. To me, it seemed like he had checked out either for the season or on Ole Miss. They comple unraveled and he didn't do anything to stop it.

yeah, until they reel this thing in form being the wild west, the more “developmental” coaches might struggle to do things the way they’ve been used to doing them. it actually makes the jobs done by izzo, barnes, sampson, and others more impressive to me. hard to be a one-year player for guys like that and ever get fully acclimated.

They are still in must-win territory.

I wanted them to lose badly to Kentucky because it would be deflating for them. Instead, they get a key player back and look to be gaining momentum.

That loss by UK jumbled up the standings - 5-way tie for 5th place

Regarding Beard, it is also possible that hitting a woman hurts your credibility with parents, players and fans. And that limits your effectiveness. Nobody is making a big deal out of it in the media, but I will never look at him the same way again.

I also think that Beard's hard ass style doesn't work as well when players can easily bounce.

I also suspect that he is an alcoholic, and that he continues to have personal problems at home. All of that distraction can add up.

It is so competitive at the top that a little less effectiveness can drop you from "top 5 coach" to "top 20 coach".

Gillespie and Ament are good enough to drag them to wins in two of last three which should get them a decent seed. Very easy to see a scenario in which they get matched up with a mid major who can speed up the pace and get them down big early.

The SEC is just weird this year - outside of Florida, everyone is very inconsistent. Just in the last week and a half:

Tennessee beats Vanderbilt, turns around and loses to Missouri, who lost to Texas
Auburn beats Kentucky, then turns around and loses to a horrendous OU
MSST loses to a bad South Carolina team
Georgia beats Kentucky, after losing to OU
aggy needed a near miraculous escape from losing to a really bad Ole Miss team

Inconsistent or more parity?

i think it’s both, but i do believe the teams are just inconsistent this year. whole lotta good offensive teams in this league, but not a lot of great defenses. florida and tennessee are in the top 15 in AdjD and Vandy is no.20, but nobody else is in the top 32 (we rank 118th, second to only ou's incredibly feeble 161st ranked defense). when very few teams defend consistently but everybody can score, i guess it’ll lead to some unpredictability and to teams being up and down.

Georgia got their leading scorer back from injury just for that Kentucky game.

Makes them a different team like LSU got their leading scorer back before we played them.

The we ran into Georgia.

MSU led Bama 11-2 early on, it’s now 60-31 Bama just before the half.
