she was only convicted 5 years ago. htf was she up for parole on a murder conviction?

oooo   forgot that she was given 10 years, but somehow eligible for parole after just 5.    nice to see shes got at least 2 more years behind bars.  but that original sentence was bullshit. it should have been 15+ and more like 20

In Texas for a 3G offense (most severe cases), you’re only eligible for parole after serving at least 50% of your time, provided you weren’t sentenced LWOP or death. For other crimes you can be eligible for parole earlier, but as a general rule if you’re sentenced to prison time you’re gonna have to serve at least half of the sentence behind bars. A lot of parolees get locked up again anyway, the parole system is pretty fucked and designed to make people fail.

This bitch deserved it though.

It's Peyton Yager reporting -- are we sure the numbers are accurate?

They probably are.  Guyger didn't appear (obviously) and she wasn't even represented by counsel (she surely can't afford a lawyer).  So, this was a "trial" against an opponent that had already forfeited. The plaintiff just had to put on evidence sufficient to get the damages awarded.

Too bad the family won’t ever see a dime. Guyger is judgement proof and since cops don’t have professional liability insurance, this is all for show.

Also, this:

An attorney for the family said a favorable verdict also sends a message to other officers about thinking before they pull the trigger.

In more "on the job" cases, I believe City of Dallas provides attorneys and some coverage through Texas Municipal League.  Maybe that's changed or TML has declined coverage given the recent spate of cop foolishness in Dallas and elsewhere in the state.

I still remain confident I could have gotten her off given the unique circumstances of her case. Her attorney was average at best.

Would it be the "oopsie poopsie" defense?

"She entered the wrong apartment and started blasting at shadows killing a man, but c'mon, it was just a big mistake. Haven't you all made mistakes? This morning I accidentally put shaving cream in my hair instead of mousse. Same thing here. She accidentally shot bullets at shadows by mistake. We're all human, right?"

City pays right? Why wouldn't they provide defense council?

Or no because she wasn't on duty?

City was dismissed as a defendant, so not on the hook.

Well, that was independent "failure to train" liability.

I think he's thinking some species of respondent superior, employer liability for employee's actions within the scope of employment.  But that doesn't apply to civil rights cases like this.

So, there's no automatic liability for cities here.  They have to voluntarily assume it.

I doubt the Jean family would do this, but with that kind of judgment, if they kept it alive (it will only last 10 years unless they take some action), they could destitute Guyger periodically for the rest of her life.

Because that worked out so well for the Goldman family.
