Cord Cutters Thread

See if your router has a web page and/or phone app. Mine gives me a real-time view of every device and how much bandwidth they’re consuming, updating every second. This gives you a very clear picture of how much total bandwidth you use/need.

Importantly, it also gives me the ability to throttle bandwidth at the device level so I can avoid going over my monthly data cap. You’ll find that devices will consume more than they need left unchecked, like cell phones presenting in ultra high def when your kids couldn’t tell the difference between that and standard def.

None! Your TVs are likely streaming between 6-12 Mbps, usually towards the lower end of that. You probably never hit even 50 in total. If you do, your TVs would briefly lower resolution to make due with what they’re getting p, and you most likely wouldn’t even notice

Correct, you only need ~5 Mbps to stream an HD tv signal. We're an all-streaming house of 3 tv's, 4 tablets, 3 iPhones, 1 gaming console, and 1 PC. We have Grande's lowest tier of 300 Mbps, and it hasn't choked at all. We could probably drop to 100 and wouldn't notice a difference. For a typical household, 1G is extreme overkill.

Question on internet speeds. I currently have xfinity’s 1G service and it’s around $140 per month for internet only. I have 5 TVs (three connected by ethernet cable) that stream sometimes 2 at a time but never 3 at a time. I don’t download/upload large files and there are no video gamers on my network. Cell phones don’t work in my house—probably something in the roof, so wifi calling is required. From what I’ve read, wifi calling doesn’t need much bandwidth. Nor should streaming two TVs at the same time. Would I likely see a difference if I dropped down to a slower/cheaper service?

You could drop it to 50mb and wouldn’t notice a difference . Only reason they even sell 1g is for suckers , no home could even come close to that unless your running a porn site

Probably belongs in dumb question amnesty, but fuck it...
About to build back patio with tv.  Is the easiest way to determine if I need a signal booster to just use speed test and determine downstream speed where the tv will be?

I would get a mesh Wifi network , google one is solid , much better than those crappy repeaters

Have 1 Roku account with 2 devices.  Want to let a friend borrow 1 device for a few weeks so they can try it out -- they have not cut the cord yet.

We live in separate towns, 45 miles apart, and have different internet providers.

Does Roku allow sharing like Netflix does??

Signed up for a free Sling TV trial last night so I could watch the game. Not sure if it was an anamoly or what but it was pretty shitty. Constant cutting out, buffering, and overall terrible picture quality. Never experienced that with YouTube TV. No way I'd pay for what I saw last night.

My experience with Sling as well... YTTV no problems

Help Me Obi Wan. You're our only hope.

To say I am a novice at "Cord Cutting" would be charitable.

I am a relatively "olds" on here and not up to to speed on the super fast, Roku-Hulu-Hula Dance whatever techno stuff.

Currently on ATT Uverse and tired of paying a brazillion dollars.

We currently have a Netflix and Amazon Prime accounts.

We spend most of the time watching local news, Amazon Prime, Netflix, the ESPN family and the national news channels.

Thinking of going with YouTubeTV and keep Amazon Prime, Netflix with some type of interwebz provider. 3 TVs in the house. No kids.No grandkids.

Thoughts from the genius, experienced cord cutters is appreciated.

Just dive in. You’re plan sounds like a reasonable start. Almost all of these services you can just cancel any time, so don’t worry about getting it perfect out of the gate.

Don’t bother getting a high speed Internet plan. You don’t need more than 100 Mbps (honestly, 50 is prob enough) despite what the salesperson will tell you.

I’d go to target and grab the fire stick 4K for like $40. Just get one and make sure you like it before getting for other TVs. I like that it controls my TV power/volume, whereas the Roku does not so I had to buy a universal remote too. Other than that, they’re quite similar.

Enjoy saving a metric shit ton of money each month and wonder why you didn’t switch sooner

Roku>Fire stick

I like my Roku’s UI better. I don’t like that the remote isn’t universal and that I have to remember to go home before turning off TV so the stream stops. Fire stick is better for us, so we have 3.

I’ve not seen any quality or speed differences between the two.

I'm an "olds" as well and when I cut the cord, I really and literally cut the coax cord.  12 yrs ago, I wanted to see if I could get enough entertainment to satisfy my needs and not pay any monthly charge.  I"ve been fairly successful in that regard.  Cutting the cord to me doesnt mean just trading one expensive option for a different less expensive option. I put an antenna in the attic and spliced it into the existing coaxial cables, the same coax cable that goes to each room.  Now, I have 55 FREE HD channels that satisfy 80-90% of my entertainment needs. Then all I needed were some one time purchases such as ROKU, Firebox, ChannelMaster DVR+, etc. and I'm set to stream anything else I want to watch, including internet radio.

Chronicle tech writer on how everything is going up quickly: https://www.houstonchronicle.com/techburger/article/Nowhere-to-run-Prices-of-cable-TV-streaming-14984491.php

it’s an interesting strategy that with more niche streaming services available, they all seem to be raising their prices. You would think it would be the other way. But I guess they can hook everyone in with promo rates and then apply the old cable policy of consistent annual raises.

i also wonder if some of the services need to back off from so much original content. When Netflix seems to release new series weekly and has a $150m original movie, these costs will only fall on the subscribers.

im still holding firm on $50 xfinity internet, antenna for locals, Hulu, prime, and recently dropped hbo and added YouTube premium just to eliminate ads. Visitors have logged onto some other channels during visits which are still active.

Annoying.  I"m running out of time on PSVue.  YTTV doesn't have Hallmark for the Missus or LHN for me.  Sling doesn't have HBO or Hallmark.  Am I really considering going back to atttvnow? Ugh.  Shoot me. Shoot me now.

In the same boat.  Just got Google Fiber and trying to decide what streaming service I want.  Used to have what was called Directv Now, it was rebranded as ATT TV Now.   LHN and locals are what I need.  When I had Direct TV Now, the lag was so bad that when I watched UT games on it that friends could text me "Touchdown Texas" and I was 3 plays behind.

Sling Orange + Sports Extra + Lifestyle Extra gets you LHN and Hallmark (plus a bunch of other shit, of course) for $45/month.

Vidgo also looks like it might do the trick for $40/mo.

Just started my 5 day trial of YTTV.  Picture quality is high.  Guide is less dumb once I reorganized it.  DVR seems straigh forward.  Menu button on Fire remote does nothing, but multiple down presses gets you where you need to go.  Seems like it will do us fine.

Don't think that's gonna be too much better. It's fun to watch the game threads during a game. People seem to be allover the place between lags in cable, satellite and streaming. Remember that signal is being sent to space and back, then through internet to your home.

I remember trying to listen to Craig Way call the games on XM while trying to sync with my DISH tv signal; several seconds difference.

not saying this specifically is the reason but i have heard/seen that hardwiring your TV device (roku, chromecast, whatever) to the router can make some of a difference - but yeah there is almost seems to be a little bit of lag between satellite / cable & IPTV

I'd like to cut the cord.  Tired of having shit internet (Uverse) and not watching but 3 channels.  Only catch is, I need access to nickelodeon for Paw Patrol for my 3 year old.

I'm pretty well versed in Roku, Netflix, etc.  I do currently use my mom's Netflix account.  I have 3 TVs.  Youtube TV doesn't have nickelodeon from what I can see.  I'm going to be upgrading internet to around $50/month and my current bill for Uverse is $130/month.  Any advice on streaming service?

HALP.

We are moving soon and building a new home, thinking of cutting the cord soon.  YouTube TV seems like the way to go.  We want espn and fox sports channels, and the news channels.  That’s about it.  I couldn’t care less about LHN though Texas baseball games would be nice to have.  Girlfriend might want HBO and showtime (hey the L word is baaaaack!)

We will get a higher speed package and we will have cat6 lines through out the house with wireless (Google mesh) too.  So speed shouldn’t be an issue.

anyone with experience ?

easy to give it up? Quality of streaming?  Worth every penny?
