So the National Socialists lose their shit about high school girls and prom dresses but are giving Bobby a pass for appropriating "Beto" from the horribly oppressed people of color? These fascists who go full snowflake over yoga don't seem to mind literally stealing a cultural identity? I thought a privileged white guys stealing from poor brownies was a recipe for full #metoo treatment. What gives?

Some people have become very worried about Beto.  I support him and still only give him a 1 in 4 chance.  Why do I believe Cruz thinks Betos chances are much higher?

Thats worse the the Red October.

Decent troll, and I'm still gonna answer.

If having a Hispanic name is such a big vote getter, and nevermind the fact that the ballot will use his stolen last name of O'Rourke, wouldn't Lupe Valdez be currently packing her bags as that's about Hispanic a name as there is.

The name argument really makes no sense and falls flat on it's face. It's like like the low information voters were given a talking point and put zero thought into it.

Robert is a Norman French name taken from Germanic. O'Rourke is an Irish name. After conquering England, Normans romped around conquering various bits of Ireland, and leaving all sorts of mini-Normans-- the "Fitz" in Fitzgerald, FitzStephen, etc, is the same as the "Fils" in Modern French-- "Son".

So Beto's problem isn't with oppressed Mexicans. It's within his very being, as he drinks and then stabs himself reenacting the scuffles between the ousted King Dermot MacMurragh who returned with Norman mercenaries to take on King Tiernan O'Rourke.

Since you asked.

And if a Hispanic first name is such a big vote getter, why would Cruz go by Ted instead of Raphael?

Only one of the two candidates changed the childhood name he had always gone by — and for the express purpose of appealing to people in the culture from which he appropriated the new name.   That candidate is not Beto.

And I don't judge Ted Cruz for it.   If he felt embarrassed to go by Felito, and wanted to be "Ted," more power to him.   But him and his supporters going after Beto on this "issue" is pathetic.

Wtf is a flaming moderate any damn how?

A sad attempt to be witty, though not smart enough to see he failed at it. He is like Bobo wearing a 9/11 jacket.

One of the funny things about this terrible post was that it completely misunderstands the concept of cultural appropriation because the poster doesn't understand the actual culture O'Rourke is from. A person named Robert being called Beto in El Paso is not cultural appropriation. The concept of Latino culture being the dominant culture in an area is simply incomprehensible to OP so he has no idea of what reality is like in that kind of area.

I've known Mexican guys as dark as it gets who went by "white" nicknames. I've called Juan Johnny because that's what they wanted to go by and I've called Carlos Charlie. Those guys weren't trying to appropriate the white man's culture, they were simply existing in it.

Long story shot, OP is a moron.

OP's SN is clearly a reference to Bruce Chapman's and George Gilder's (creators of the old Advance magazine) "flaming moderates."  OP is clearly more well read and erudite than you schlubs.

Come on guys, there is a clever poster here. You can do better than that. My favorite is "But Beto has a Mexican friend" POV. Epic Snowsplaining.

I do apologize for the re-tread. I cannot read pages of stupidity on the other thread. However, not shocked on the double standards. Shocking. Next you're going to tell me you care about old rape accusations.

If all you are looking to do is troll, all I'm looking to do is neg.  Good luck with your posting career here.

My intent was not to troll, and I own not reading the 500 pages of name-calling that is the other thread. FWIW, one of the things that fascinates me is double standards in political debates whether it be rape allegations or "cultural appropriation." We live in a world where so-called mainstream news reports on one person being mad because white people like yoga, yet no one seems to care that this guy "appropriates" a Hispanic American nickname? For the record, I kind of think the entire "cultural appropriation" argument is silly, but what fascinates me is people's ability to apply completely different standards and frames depending on whether it confirms or contradicts their biases.

You can say a lot about me - my favorite today is "shitgibbon" - but I am principled and consistent and do not move the goal posts. I realize that blows a bunch of people's minds, and if they need to snowflake and neg rep, so be it. It is not like my life revolves around this board.

I already explained to you why your attempted point in the OP is completely incorrect.

Your principles and consistency apparently have nothing to do with facts and reality, that's the issue people have with you.

He's not appropriating anything. It's been his name since he was a toddler.

i'm not at all hispanic, that i know of, but i've married into a very hispanic family. certain things have slipped into my lexicon like calling closer friends' daughters "mama," which has kind of been a learned unconscious behavior. i haven't taken the mija dive, because that would too much appropriation, but i've found myself appropriating that term.

i'm called mijo more than my own name by my in-laws' family.

i also work closely with colleagues in our london office and find myself conflating our english with their english from time to time. i still use "yall" when talking with them, but i find myself using words like "payrise" and referring to plural groups of people like a soccer team in a plural fashion. like "newcastle united are shit this year" which strongly contrasts to my saying "i think dallas is shit this year" when i refer to the football teams here.

it happens. beto grew up in a hispanic community, and got tagged with a nickname. my wife's grandfather (god rest his soul) used to call me by the diminutive spanish version of my english name. is that appropriation? if people called me that from a young age, and that's how people knew me, is that appropriation because i'm not hispanic?

this thread is weak shit.

Who the hell cares if white people like yoga?  Yoga is the shit.

And if you grow up in a latino area surrounded by Latin culture, which Beto O'Rourke did, you are not appropriating the culture.  It's just how you were raised. Furthermore, he didnt give himself the nickname as it's been explained 1000 times on this board and thousands of times elsewhere.

Be better than this.

The general concept of cultural appropriation is asinine. Cultural interchange creates culture. Without it, we don't have our language, music, food, art, etc. It's obviously possible to engage with a culture on racist terms (see blackface), but that's usually not what's being talked about.

That said, even by the most generous definition, what Beto is doing isn't appropriation.
