The fiscal part of the GOP is what turns me off today, much because of what you describe.  I know people get pissy about the ‘both sides’ thingy, but that seems to be where Congress is more unified than anywhere else.
As far as social policy, neither side really gets it right. They just see the issues as leverage towards their fiscal goals.  It’s off-putting as hell.

You must be a white straight guy. Because most of the rest of us don’t see social issues that impact us as a fiscal issue.

You’re right.  Nobody leverages a crisis for more funding...

Social policy is bigger than sexuality, if you don’t mind looking past the end of your...um... nose.

Unicorns don't piss rainbows.  That's a myth.

For the record, I've got nothing against Troph. I enjoy reading his POV on issues. But if you're pissing rainbows, you need to see a medical professional in a timely manner.

Except it doesn't, because you mostly vote Republican, and it isn't both sides either because Democrats have been better on fiscal policy at the national level for your and my entire life. The only notable exception to that was the best president of my life, George HW Bush, who many Republicans basically abandoned because he led a policy of cutting spending and raising taxes when fiscal reality required it.

maybe it's just perception, but I used to feel safer with regard to taxes when GOP was in majority.

Now, they all just think the citizen is an endless fountain of cash.

The federal government has more than enough revenue.  Spend it better.

The sudden love affair with socialism gives me pause.  The left might still yet attempt to differentiate themselves, fiscally from the GOP.

Just out of curiosity, what is the highest effective tax rate you've ever paid to the federal government? Has it ever broken 20%?

Did anyone catch Cruz over at Pappa Charlies sat? I obviously don't keep up with this stuff, but it was pretty packed (not that's it's really a huge place to begin with though). There was also 4-6 counter protesters across the street holding signs.

Also, while all this team republican vs team democrats arguing is super super interesting, can anyone point me to a comparison of Ted and Beto's differences on the issues? I get that Ted is not very likable, while Beto is very likable, but I don't really vote based on that (much) and was just wondering about key issues and such.

Cruz is in favor of sucking Trump's stubby little cock, Beto is opposed to it.

That seems like how Congress does all their shit.  Charge us taxpayers $10 and it should only cost $2.75

On the topic of fiscal responsibility, how about criminalizing a plant that nobody fucking cares about anymore and locking up people caught holding it longer than anyone involved in 2009 financial meltdown, basically eliminating the chance that they ever become a taxpayer when they get older and wiser.  Where does Felito land on that one.

Ted Cruz believes very strongly that he should be President. That is the entirety of the list of things that Ted Cruz believes.

That shit will never happen.  he's walking the tightrope in Texas and it SHOULD be a layup...

But he managed to fuck that up.  He gambled on hammering Trump publicly.  Now he needs Cheeto's endorsement.

Reckon humble pie will change the man?   I don't.   On one hand I applaud his boldness in saying what he said.  On the other, he spent a shit-ton of his political capital.

My dad has a pension, social security and lifetime health care from the government. He’s deathly afraid of socialism too.

The fact is we have socialism already by his standards - it’s just for him though - no one else. Because by god he’s earned it. Yep.

Did he work for that pension, healthcare, and social security?

I love it when people conflate earned benefits versus entitlements.  and yeah, if Soc Security wasn't compulsory, i would have opted out immediately.

We have 11 people signed up for our Beto phonebank tomorrow night.  I say gottdam.  Don't know where we're going to put them all.

You know, as far as conservative vs. liberal is concerned - I have a slightly different take on it than most of y'all because I have a vagina.  And the way I see it, one of the parties wants to get all up in my wallet and the other one wants to get all up in my vagina.  So it comes down to, which do I value most?  Wait for it....wait for it.....VAGINA.   So as much as wasteful spending irritates the fuck out of me, I'd rather throw a bit more coin at the feds and be able to do what I want with my vagina.

Military and I have zero issue with his benefits but he and everyone else warning me of socialism needs to look in the mirror. The rest of us are paying for his annuities and healthcare. The fact that he signed a contract offering socialized retirement doesn’t make it something different. If the larger collective is asked to pay for an individual that is a brand of socialism according to his interpretation, except as it applies to him, because he worked for it.

Leaving the pension aside, because that is a private agreement with his former employer, no--he did not work for his Medicare and Social Security.  He worked for a paycheck and whatever other benefits his employer offered.  But he didn't work for Medicare or Social Security; those are granted irrespective of whether he worked or not.

The money you pay into Social Security doesn't go into a lockbox that is just for you.  I would think that Al Gore would've taught you that.  It's deposited into the Treasury, which then pays it out to current Social Security recipients.  It's not "socialism" per se, but it is definitely the reallocation of wealth.

Ted Cruz favored corporations being able to sell your browsing history to the highest bidder. Beto opposed it.

Tec Cruz was against Net Neutrality. Beto favored it.

And by the way...I value vagina more than I value my wallet too, which explains the tens of thousands of dollars I've spent in pursuit of vagina.

This really does sum it up and is the main reason I rip on Republicans more than Democrats despite supporting neither party's platform overall. If the GOP actually practiced the fiscal responsibility they preach then it would be different, but as it is right now the two parties can basically be summed up as:

Republicans - Fiscal irresponsibility combined with fewer social liberties
Democrats - Fiscal irresponsibility combined with greater social liberties

It's a pretty simple choice even if the options are both poor.

You have to expand on that a bit -

Republicans - Pay for current things with less money by cutting taxes; increasing and/or not cutting current services with less revenue

Democrats - Pay for current things with more money buy raising taxes; increasing services with more revenue

Posted

The difference is Democrats are realistic that they need actual money to pay for the shit they want.

Republicans want to spend, too.  They’ve just deluded themselves with fairy tales of trickle down economics and Laffer curves.  Or maybe they know that’s all bullshit but just don’t care if some poor fuckers in the future have to pay for their good time.  So, Republicans are either deluded supply side cultists or selfish, money-grabbing pieces of shit.  Either way, they suck.
