Cruz vs Beto

I think it’s critical that these young voters vote early.
The young are much more likely than the olds to look at a long line on Election Day and say “fuck this I ain’t waiting 30 minutes to vote” and the leave without voting.

Yep
I going to do some VDR events on the 40 acres to get addresses updated and kids registered. Then early voting push. Lot of untapped votes.

Anecdotal, but two older members of my family, both white, female, and in their 60s, and both having voted for Trump/against Hillary, have said they are voting for Beto.  One, because she hates Ted Cruz for not standing to Trump up for his wife more, the other because she's never liked Cruz.

Again, anecdotal, but just odd as hell that both would openly tell me that.  I was expecting something along the lines of "I hate socialism, rawr! etc." parroting what Cruz says when he meets 50 people at the Lufkin Five-and-Dime.

I'm skeptical that these types of voters really will vote for Beto when it comes down to it.  They will soon be bombarded with messages that it's important to keep the Senate red so that Trump can nominate more Gorsuchs and Kavanaughs to the Supreme and other federal courts.  Voters will hold their nose and vote Cruz.

Look, I don't go to the suburbs because they are the suburbs, so I just picked one out of a hat. Feel free to replace Missouri City with Cypress or some shit.

God dammit.

For the record in my little area of Cypress shit like that isn't normal at all. It's more "Republican because my parents were Republican" than anything.

I think more likely they will just "forget" to vote that day....

It's a partial win for Beto if he can keep some Cruz voters home.  Cruz won in 2012 by 1.25M votes.   Assuming that is worse case for Beto, he needs some combination of finding new voters, keeping Cruz voters home, and especially flipping Cruz voters to him.    It's an uphill battle and I don't see how Cruz won't be the favorite going into election day.

Correct. “Librul” has been made into such a scary ugly connotation, people will opt for the devil they know, even when it’s against their own interest.

You and your friends are the reason why Texas is so fucked up politically. Stupid fucking lame ass white evangelicals in the suburbs who vote for Dan Patrick and have stupid fucking boring dinner parties where you all eat white bread with mayo and talk about how important Jesus is. Fuck you you bunch of Oakley wearing, F250 driving, khaki pant wearing middle management, uncultured fucking Aggies in Missouri City.

You havent' been to Mo City in awhile apparently, its Lit AF.   It aint fucking Katy.

I would be, but these are women that, in 2016, wouldn't have even admitted to considering a Democrat (although one was a Democrat in her younger years).   One of them telling me they'd vote for Beto would nearly be the equivalent of a Vice President coming out and saying he's gay.

Samesies.

Beto is neat, I am digging him. I like him.

That said, I was with a bunch of peers this past weekend in an upper-middle-class suburb (not a tony one full of big monied people, just youngish professionals with young kids, mostly, until they trade up as they age) at a non-nondenominational church homegroup dinner. I tell you all that to give the context. Anyways, a bunch of these guys and gals, who are prime Beto demographic as far as age/hip-and-cool, were begrudgingly and sad about "having" to vote for Cruz over Beto because of some fundamental (gays and abortion) reasons. They'd much rather vote for the cool guy but don't want to be complicit in the degradation of culture/society. Just an anecdote to be sure, but it makes me wonder how many people are out there like that.

Personally I think that the culture wars are over and the water has dredged, so there isn't a worry about the "silent majority" who will begrudgingly vote for Cruz (like they did for Trump apparently) and that the Christians have lost Lewbowski.

What is wrong with you sensitive souls? How can anyone think this post is trolling? I've begrudgingly in the past and pretty easily now admitted that I actively like this guy Beto...and I'm not his target demographic.

The anecdotal thing is just giving some perspective to the inner-going-ons within a demographic few on this thread have any insight into, is all I was meaning by sharing-- not trolling.

Lo Siento.

Cruz isn't going to bring in any new voters, and is not exactly igniting a fire under his base.  Plus, the last time he ran, he benefitted from a Presidential election.

Cruz's tweets/ads, and the Texas GOP's ads/tweets, tells me that neither one is very organized.  Not a good thing at this late stage.

Voting for cruz isnt going to do shit about abortion and gay marriage.  And if that is their biggest concern, they have more issues than deciding who to vote for.

I don't necessarily (or at least, entirely) disagree.

Since when does reporting the zeitgeist of a demographic constitute being an asshole or a troll?

Stasis breeds complacency.

Texas politics has been in stasis for nearly a quarter century.

The GOP hasn't needed to try, because all they needed to win a race was for the candidate to have an (R) next to his name.  Side note -- thus, the only races that mattered were primaries, and in a non-two party state, those devolve into a battle of "who is the base-iest candidate."  Fine for when it's a one-party state.  Not so fine when the state begins to be competitive.

The Dems haven't needed to try, because what's the fucking point?  They could put Jesus Christ, Son of God (D) on the ballot, and he'd lose by 20 points (dirty jewish hippie).

So, NOBODY has any experience running an actual competitive campaign in a two-party race.  As a result, the GOP is stumblefucking around, with no idea what to do.  And as a result, Beto has had to build his entire campaign and machinery from the ground up.

At the very least, I'm hoping that this race sees the BEGINNING of the return to treating Texas like a two-party state.  Which, at the very least, may mean that the GOP will realize they can't run butt-reaming jackholes for every position and automatically win.  Eventually, it will be close enough that a shitty GOP candidate can lose. I'd love it if Cruz was the first of those shitty candidates.  I'm not counting on it.  But there's a shot.

They’re a tolerant group, you see, if you would simply conform to their beliefs.

My neighbor has asked me no less than 5 times to put a Beto sign in my yard, but I’ve politely declined thus far. He’s also the resident stop and chat guy, so I’m pondering a Cruz sign to see if he’ll leave me alone.

Chrispy just wants to be free to make horrible life choices with no judgment from anyone. Personally, I am intolerant of stupid ideas and discourage them. But if Chrispy wants to put his dick in a blender, I will make an exception.

No way was Cruz expecting this to be any kind of serious race.   It's a little like Herman treated Maryland last year.  He was looking past this race,  more worried about how to handle Trump  than he was winning Texas again.  They got caught with their britches down and all they can do is fling mud.

Damn, I know old people shrink, but how tall is Beto?

Probably 6'5" or so.

I'm just short of 6'1".  When I'm in my boots, I'm easily 6'2".  When I met him Monday night, I was wearing my boots, and I came up to about his eyes.

I am pleasantly surprised with how the punk band stuff is turning out. When I first heard that that was his background I thought there’s no way he’s going to seem relatable to the majority of voters here in Texas. So far it seems like it is going to be a plus for him.

It's very relatable to anybody under 55 or so.

The olds probably hate it though.

The punk generation is now 45-65 years old? Sounds ideal

Troph threw a damned fine party, which was really well attended.  We raised some serious jack for Beto last night, but we weren't the biggest fundraiser of the night.  After our deal, Beto headed over to West Lake Hills for another fundraiser.  As I was taking out my trash this morning, I started chatting with a neighbor who was at that fundraiser--they raised north of $90K.  Between the two, that's a good Monday night.
And as an added bonus, troph let me take the half of the fifth of Knob Creek that went undrank as a party favor.  Something about only straight guys drinking bourbon . . . .  Anyway--gift horses and all that.
Oh--final note.  I've seen a lot of politicians speak.  Some are great.  Most are good.  I've seen some bad ones.  Beto may be the most dynamic politician I've ever seen speak.  He's really impressive.
undrunk.

I’ve read that some local Dem officials don’t know what to think of the Beto campaign.  They feel left out that Beto campaign is doing little to reach out to them to utilize their “machine.”  Of course they haven’t been delivering state wide votes in a while so why should Beto cater to their needs.

Yeah, sorry if I'm not looking to the coaching staff of the Washington Generals for game strategy advice.  "But we've coached 1,000 games!" is not compelling....particularly when you look at their Generals-like W-L record.

As Bozo has observed, there IS NO STATEWIDE DEM PARTY IN TEXAS.  As a result, Beto is building what he needs from scratch.  Good.  Maybe that can provide a foundation for a new, functional Dem party in Texas.

Yes, it’s a yearbook photo from Second Baptist School in Houston.

Well then in my opinion, whoever someone posts Beto’s not that bad lookin’ mugshot, someone should immediately posts Ted’s famous trump phone bank photo where he looks like the ultimate cuck, and whenever someone posts Beto’s dress shot, they should immediately post Ted’s insane clown posse photo.

So that we we can then cancel out the idiocy and focus on ya know, things that might actually be important?
