Probably because it's a common diminutive for Robert.

Someone born and raised in Texas would know that. If they moved here from Canada it might be confusing.

There are 2 threads on this board that cover it plus probably 10,000 articles at your fingertips in Google.  If you don't already know the answer its because you don't want to know the answer.  So fuck off.  Negged.

I negged your mom last night with 4” of pure furry Francis.

So you don’t know? I can google it, but I want to know from his supporters.

It's because he grew up in an area with a large Latino population, where Beto is a common nickname for Robert or Roberto.   It's been his nickname since preschool.

Now your turn:  Why did Rafael Cruz stop going by "Felito," which was the nickname he had since he was a little child, and start calling himself "Ted"?

Ok Beto's been so successful with the texting campaign that others are copying.  Today I got a text from the Texas Democratic Party and Steve Adler asking for my support for their various campaigns.  I'm going to try to ignore both and see if it stops.  I'm going to write Beto a strongly worded letter if this shit keeps happening.

They texted me last week asking if I supported Adler, and I responded, "Given the choices, I guess so." They promptly asked if I would allow them to put a sign in my yard, and I said "Sure. Why not?"

There's now one in my yard next my Beto one, and I haven't heard from them again.

How old was Felito when he started calling himself Ted?

When he realized his name was perilously close to being "Blowjob."

It’s mind blowing that Texas is in play for the dems.  I get that Nevada is a potential loss for heller (republicans) as Nevada has been trending blue for a while.  But Texas?

Many Hard core republicans in Texas seem to hate Cruz.  How did republicans find themselves in this place?  If Cornyn was fighting Beto right now, Cornyn would be winning easily.  Maybe not by 20 but he wouldn’t be worried.

Go back 23 months. Democrats just lost to President Donald Trump. Someone comes up to you and says "Republicans very well could lose Senate seats in Texas, Tennessee and Arizona in 2018 while Democrats hold West Virginia, Montana, Indiana, Wisconsin, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Missouri; oh and North Dakota is considered a toss-up."

"Oh and a black guy will probably be elected governor of Florida and a black woman could very well be elected governor in Georgia. And Scott Walker is going to lose in Wisconsin."

You'd probably crack a rib laughing so hard.

Vote for a hippie, gun hating socialist  or a self promoting bitch?

That ain't a shot at Beto either... just describing what a lot of folks are asking themselves before they vote.  Bitches ain't all that beloved in Texas.  Not that kind...

NM on my question about the Cook Report.  because of that arrow in the storyline, I misread that it was saying Texas was now a D-Lean.

people who are asking themselves that question in that way already have Cruz in their heads.  So I can see how it would be tough.  What I'm saying is that Beto is not a hippie (wrong generation, but for sure the most accurate of the three descriptors if we take that as 'accepting of non whitebread types'), not a gun hater, and not a socialist.

talking about "socialist", I'm going to take that to mean single payer/expanding medicare. and gun hating, I'll take that to mean that he's pro restricting sales of assault rifles (a position I know you hate).  I think we could talk about facts, assessing where we are, what's working/what's not working, I don't think that will get us very far.  I might suggest that if your position on either of those things ("fix all massive problems by throwing the free market at it", "never bend on guns") is one of no compromise, you are going to lose the war.  If you were a boomer, it's possible that "your side" may hold on until you are dead, so maybe you wouldn't care.  For others, the "no compromise" positions aren't going to work out well long run.  Consider electing a representative who is capable of working with others and is interested in representing his constituents.  At least, question what the self promoting bitch has told you about the guy.  Because his most consistent position is lying about O'Rourke.

That is worth ZERO to me if I disagree with him on social policy, gun restrictions,  among other things.

IDGAF about liking the guy.  That seems to hold some kind of value, but how he'll vote is what means the most.  What legislation will he support?  I can't get past all of that just because someone seems like they'd be cool to have a beer with.

This race is yet another shit sandwich, and that's why it's split damned near down the middle.

reference the rest of my post that you didn't quote.  if your goal is no change to gun laws in the next couple of years, definitely vote for Cruz.  if you have a more forward thinking philosophy on that same subject, it may actually be more self serving for you to bend, not break.

Cruz is easily one of the most unlikable politicians of my life time.  I've never seen anything like it.  He has actively negative charisma.  I honestly think that's the biggest issue here.  He's being challenged by his polar opposite on the charisma scale.  You can actively hate O'rourke's politics, but he's charming as hell.

So was Bill Clinton, that's not necessarily a good thing, but charm will take you a long, long way in politics.

It isn't "forward thinking"  to restrict the liberty of those who otherwise obey the law.

I hate that mindset.  It is false as hell, and some sort of idiotic pat on the back for having some alleged solution.

It’s really speaks to Cruz’s brilliance as a politician that he can be so unliked yet so successful politically.

Other than being elected to Senate, what has he accomplished as a politician?  I mean positives for anyone other than himself.

Heidi gets to spend less time around him?

My theory is most standard GOP voters in Texas were never really exposed to him beyond ads and his primary upset in 2012, fueled by a lot of anti-Obama/establishment fury.  If you just go off his resume, he looks so fucking impressive as a conservative.  Then you actually are exposed to him on screen and it's a bit nauseating.

The last 4 years have really shown how thoroughly unlikable he is, and his pathetic turn under Trump's desk as only exacerbated it.  I mean, the man insulted your wife.

If he wins, it's really a credit to how strong the GOP is in Texas right now.  In any state with a slightly more purplish hue, I'm convinced Cruz would be 10 points behind.

If that is the case, then why not rescind the restrictions on Class A explosives, grenade launchers, land mines and grenades?  Or even the products like bulk fertilizer to make bombs.

Lines have been drawn for a reason, to save lives.   Beto, like many others think adding assault rifles to the list of restricted items is due.

when I say forward thinking, I don't mean "progressive", I mean thinking about the future.  And what might happen, and what the different paths that the future could roll down mean.  The argument that I am making is that the choice now to not bend at all, to characterize someone with a stance like Beto as "anti-gun", to pledge allegiance to the NRA, to continue to prop up toads like Cruz - that is the one that leads to tighter restrictions on guns in the long term.  Than the one where you elect a gun moderate to higher office and you have an actual Texan with actual Texan values at a prominent position of the table working with and being among the folks making decisions when the inevitable tightened restrictions occur.

LMAO.

Ted Cruz would not have inspired the massive rustbelt blue collar shift from Obama to Trump.  He might have ran up his totals in the South, but the Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania probably would have stayed blue.

because you aren't the only one using the roadways.  Your driving affects others.

My possession of a firearm in no way affects you.  My misuse of it might, and therein lies the issue.  I believe in prosecuting the fuck out of crimes committed with guns.  It's not that I believe in permitting someone to do whatever they want with a gun when it impacts others.

This is but one of many "gives and takes" should I choose Beto, with an emphasis on the GIVE.

Cruz is just a polished Trump.  The Russians would have run their same game with Cruz (but Cruz wouldn’t have conspired) and you wouldn’t have the Access Hollywood Video disaster.

Also important to remember the big money, NRA, and Cambridge Analytica were with Cruz way before Trump.

Moreover, Cruz has been running against Hillary his entire political career.

Cruz was better positioned to beat Hillary than Trump.
