Cruz vs Beto

SIAP: Obama endorsed some Texas dems today. Still nothing for Beto.

The best explanation I read was "Obama’s endorsement might not be helpful to Democrats competing in southern states, where the former president isn’t popular. Bredesen said last month he wouldn’t welcome Obama or other party leaders campaigning for him in Tennessee."

But I'm still hoping Obama gives a surprise, splashy endorsement like a week before the election.

Rest assured, Obama hates Cruz about as bad as you can hate somebody.  He's doing  whatever Beto's campaign thinks is best.  Consider him a "silent commit", and he'll announce if and  when it's appropriate.

Gotta spend a bulk of that money on latino outreach. Shit I would spend all of it on just that demographic.

http://www.latimes.com/politics/la-na-pol-texas-senate-20181001-story.html

“We don’t know whether or not these big rallies will result in a swell in turnout,” said Matt Barreto, co-founder of Latino Decisions, a polling and research firm that works for several liberal groups and which has been steadily surveying Latinos in Texas for years.

A big concern is that the most recent data show Latinos reporting the same level of campaign outreach — someone actually knocking on the door and talking about the race — as was reported at this time in 2014. Those contacts, Barreto said, are the single most important thing a campaign can do to drive up turnout.

Quote

More than 2.1 million eligible Latinos in Texas didn’t vote in 2016. As college-educated, white suburban voters in places like Houston and Dallas migrate toward the Democrats in unexpected numbers, rattling the state’s electoral map, Democrats sense new opportunities they haven’t had before. Turning those into actual victories for statewide candidates, however, depends on turning out more of those non-voting Latino citizens.

“There is this huge potential if you get them registered and excited and starting to turn out that you can just swing the entire state,” Barreto said. “You could potentially just jump over the purple stage and turn Texas blue.”

Quote

“Republicans are doing a better job in talking to Latinos in a way that is culturally competent,” said Cristina Tzintzún, executive director of Jolt, a Texas nonprofit focused on mobilizing and registering Latino voters.

“Republicans talk about the issues that matter to families,” she said. “Latinos want to hear their future will be better, not worse.”

The difficulty Democrats face here was underscored by the many Latinos present at Cruz rallies over the weekend.

Among them was a teacher named Robert who mocked O’Rourke for going with the nickname Beto. Another was Francisco Gutierrez, a 69-year-old Vietnam veteran from Lubbock, who was all in on Cruz’s caricature of the Democrat.

“I fought socialism, and I know what it does to people,” he said. “I don’t feel guilty at all. I am a grandfather and I want to protect my grandchildren from any ideas that don’t reflect who we are as a family. It is offensive for some people to want to force those values upon us.”

More anecdotal evidence: Just got home from the cellphone store to replace my old one.

The customer service guy (Hispanic, posssibly gay) received a text, and after he looked down said out loud: "God, I wish these people would stop texting me!" He then explained that he shouldn't gripe, because he had donated and was going to vote for the first time ever. I'd guess he was in his early 30s. He explained, "I want to vote so I can complain about things - you can't complain if you don't vote."

I told him, "I hear ya. There's a lot to complain about these days."

Been up for 45 minutes and have seen/heard at least 7 attack ads on Beto.  Jesus.

sidenote—strongly to very strongly considering attending the event for Beto with Bun B and Arian Foster

They run a ton of those ads in the morning because the olds they are trying to scare are up. Seriously, the whole campaign is scaring old people into voting for Cruz.

it's shitty truth, but truth nonetheless - which is why I think Beto has been careful not to align himself with Obama

If obama did endorse Beto there’d be an ad by Cruz the next day. Just saw his O&G one yesterday...anyone else tired of the ominous music/angry voice/huge red letter ad template? They instantly make me believe the opposite is true of whatever ‘facts’ they claim.

In my Brushy creek hood this morning I counted 11-6 signs in favor of Beto. Definitely more Cruz signs showing up.

I'm 99% sure Ted and Culberson use the same voice guy for their ads.  I bet that dude is a trillionaire and all he has to say is "illegal aliens" and "Nancy Pelosi" over and over again.

I doubt it's Beto, per se. I think this is more of an indication that younger people in the state are waking up and saying 'enough of this shit.' I've had several millennials tell me as much - that this is first time they're engaged in politics and want to make a difference.

This is correct at least in my direct experience.  My kids are 19 and 22 and both are voting for Beto. Most of their friends are registered and are voting too.  They keep up with issues, particularly the older one and are way more informed than I was at that age - hell, I didn't give a shit about voting until my late 20s.

AUSTIN (KXAN) — As the voter registration deadline nears, Senate candidate Beto O'Rourke is planning a tour to reach college students across Texas.

"The 'Fight for our Future' campus tour continues O’Rourke’s commitment to showing up everywhere, for everyone, every single day," said a release from his campaign

The Democrat will start by speaking at Austin Community College Oct. 2, and he will stop at both the University of Texas at San Antonio and the University of Texas at Austin on Oct. 4. Below is a full schedule:

  • Austin Community College Oct. 2
  • University of Texas at San Antonio Oct. 4
  • University of Texas at Austin Oct. 4
  • Texas A&M University Oct. 5

  • Paul Quinn College Oct. 6
  • University of Texas at Dallas Oct. 6
  • Lone Star Community College Oct. 8

O'Rourke is challenging incumbent Republican Ted Cruz for his U.S. Senate seat. Recent polls have shown close but diverging results.

A mid-September Quinnipiac poll had Cruz ahead by 9 points, while an Ipsos poll released a day later showed O'Rourke leading by 2 points.

Oct. 9 is the last day to register to vote for the Nov. 6 election

*I say this as someone who did as well, so don't take that the wrong way.

Indeed he did. She's right in my wheelhouse.

Yep. She is keeping it right. M12 could stand to walk into a gym every now and then if thats him on the left.

I outkicked my coverage too, but a punter needs to stay in shape to make that tackle.

I’m not voting for Beto, but there was a commercial on am radio this morning depicting him as a stoner and ruining carpet with his skateboard. I believe it was for Oops! Steam Cleaning, but it was... bizarre.

You mean a Republican attempt to be funny and clever didn’t work out? No way!

Says if he doesn’t win he should go straight to Iowa and start running for President.

Beto and Cruz could take a road trip up there because either way, I'm sure that's where Cruz will be. He never seems to be happy with the office he's in.

Went to the original fundraising event that we had signed up for last night at Robert Rodriguez's house.  It was pretty cool, got to rub shoulders with Richard Linklater and some other Austin luminaries.  There was Beto beer, Beto cookies with his face on the front in sugar, Beto Whataburger tacos( beef, onions, mustard), and a whole lot of swag like buttons and coozies that we already have a million of. And a good Latino swing/lounge band.  M12 scored himself a giant Beto mug, filled with Beto beer of course.  Beto gave pretty much the same speech he did at the Willie concert.  Listening to it again it occurred to me that he is actually to the left of me on a few of his positions.  I don't care.  I mean, no one (unless you allow Fox News and Rush Limbaugh to define your politics for you) is going to get 100% of what they want out of a politician.  And this whole Tea Part, Evangelical, burn it all down if they don't get 100% of what they want mindset, is a great part of what is causing the damage being done to this country.
So next week our house turns into a pop-up office.  We'll have people here doing phone banks and organizing block walks for 9 hours a day, 5 days a week.  Yippee.  I'm starting to believe we can actually pull this off.To be honest, I have been of the Brisket mindset for some time, just not as vocal about it, at least here.  I'm not normally a doomsday theorist but this just feels different to me, and very very dangerous and scary.  I have decided to hold out on progressing further down the rabbit hole until after the midterms.  Then I'll decide whether to recommence with the panic or not.
Oh and to those of you who claim that M12 has outkicked his coverage, he wanted me to tell you all that he is well aware, and to give a big ol' grin and middle finger to each and every one of you

One more thing, and I was really surprised to find this out, but Justin Nelson, the Democratic challenger for State Attorney General, is within a couple of points of indicted felon Paxton.  Another encouraging sign, maybe.  I just wanted to put it out there for everyone's radar screens.
Keep up the good fight. Nelson has consistently been close. Paxton is among the R incumbents that had a sizable bloc of votes against them in the primary (Cruz is not). I have to think that if Beto wins, we are looking at a D senator, Lt Gov, AG, and ag commissioner, which have all consistently been close in polls.

You have to assume that Beto has some coattails in some statewide and local races. I think the biggest impact will be on local races in the large cities. Normally the gop could have counted on the Democrat midterm no show but that isn’t the case.
